Purpose of this Guide

This Course Guide provides an outline of the topics that will be covered in the course for
the Semester, the schedule of its delivery, the discussion subjects and the assessment
strategies. It will help you to develop a study schedule taking into consideration your
other commitments, and therefore focus on completing your activities within the
stipulated timeframes.
Course Coordinators Expectations
You should find this course very interesting as it seeks to blend the theory with the
practical in the context of strategic management. You will draw on your learning from
previous courses such as Human Resource Management and Marketing. Organizations
engage in strategic planning because they are trying to close a gap between the
organizations position within the industry and environment within which it operates.
Therefore, you will understand better how organizations, including your place of
employment, determine their purpose, set the direction to achieve their purpose and shape
their destiny in an environment where competition cannot be ignored.
You must have a vision for your success and a direction for getting there. You have
to know what train youre going to ride The Northbound Train - Karl Albrecht
Organizations are very similar to the individuals who manage and work for them. You
must have a planned strategy if you are to succeed. As you proceed with your course of
study and aim to achieve success, you should also operate with the following in mind:
Know your strengths and weaknesses which should serve as a guide in
determining the areas on which to focus
Develop your study guide taking into consideration your work, family and other
commitments.
Expectations of Students
I encourage you to do the following:

Post your introductory message/profile and picture (from shoulders up).

Build your virtual network and interact with your peers.

Log on to the system at least once per day.

Participate in Unit discussions.

Post any queries or concerns that you may have.

Complete weekly unit activities within the stipulated time.

MGMT3031 Business Strategy and Policy Students Course Guide - Academic Year 20152016, Semester 2

Complete the graded coursework assignments within the deadline date.

Note the requirements for all the exercises and assignments carefully.

Ensure that you check your deadline dates and keep abreast with your readings.

Ensure that you Subscribe to all Forums so that you do not miss any postings.
Apart from the respective Forums which are available for you to make your posts,
I advise that you use the Message Facility to send other notes. Refrain from
sending notes via e-Mail unless it is confidential.

Check the Class News and Announcements Forum and Tutor-Student Exchange
Forum daily for any new posts that may be made.

Attend and participate in Synchronous BbC/Elluminate Live sessions

Manage your time effectively. Develop a study schedule.

Discussion Questions Note that you are required to make your individual submissions
to the discussion questions (Add a new discussion topic) in the respective forums and
then go to the post(s) made by your peers to engage them. This method will ensure that
your response to the discussion question(s) do not get lost in the middle of it all. Please
make every effort to engage at least two (2) of your peers for each weekly discussion.

Plagiarism and Copying

These are serious offences. Note that it is quite acceptable to work with your peers as
this serves to enhance the learning process but you must not submit responses that are
replicas of each others work. Also, citing of your sources of data is very important for
activities/exercises and assignments.
NB: I urge you to read the document on Plagiarism (Undergraduate Student AntiPlagiarism Policy, Office of the Board for Undergraduate Studies, April 9, 2010)
posted in the Quick Links Menu in The Learning Exchange.
Note that The University of the West Indies Open Campus takes a very strong stance on

A very brief introduction stating what the BCG Matrix represents.

Next, you are required to identify each of the four (4) quadrants/business units of the
BCG Matrix and provide a brief explanation for each one.

Lets look at Question 1(b)

Having identified each of the four (4) quadrants/business units of the BCG Matrix in
Question 1(a) and provided a brief explanation for each one, you are now required to
identify one (1) strategy that may be used by an organization or business unit which falls
into each of the four (4) quadrants, and state why the strategy that you have identified is
appropriate.
Therefore, it means that you will be focusing on each of the four (4) quadrants.
Remember to provide appropriate examples to support your response.
A brief conclusion is expected at the end of your assignment.

Index of 25% and under, then you have the opportunity to re-visit your assignment and

Note the following Regulations Guiding Late Assignments and Extensions

Regulation Guiding Late Assignments

(From the Desk of the HOD - PDD - February 22, 2013)
The following regulations are applicable to the treatment of assignments submitted late:
a. Submission of late assignment will accrue a penalty Unless the student obtains
prior approval. Use of the strategy - late assignment box will be allowed with
a penalty for late submission. Example: An assignment may be submitted in the
late box but a penalty of 10% for each day late will be subtracted from the
students final mark on the assignment.
If a LATE BOX is not used the assignments submitted in the usual way may be
accepted as late submissions and the time stamp applied by the tutor.
b.

For activities on the Discussion Forums discretion should be used in deciding

on a date/time for final posting and any penalty for lateness. Example:
Students presentation after X day/time may be posted but will not receive a
mark; or, will receive a maximum mark of 1 despite the quality of the post, etc.

c. Extension for an assignment may be granted by the CC to all students on the

recommendation of a Tutor after careful consideration of the timelines for
completion of the course - no penalty would apply.
d.

Extension of assignment to an individual student a doctors certificate must be

produced by the student and verified by the OCCS staff - no penalty would
apply.

e.

Extension of assignment granted to an individual student based on extenuating

circumstances e.g. the death of a family member - no penalty would apply.

EXAMPLE OF HOW PENALTY MARKS WILL BE CALCULATED

Penalty of 10% for each day late will be subtracted from your final mark on the
assignment.
EXAMPLE: Assignment 1 = 20% (i.e. Marked out of 20)

10% of 20 = 2 marks
Students assignment was submitted 3 days late = 2 X 3 = 6 marks as penalty
Students paper was marked and the student received 15 marks
Page 36 of 37

MGMT3031 Business Strategy and Policy Students Course Guide - Academic Year 20152016, Semester 2

Penalty applied and final mark = 15 6 = 9 Marks

Final Mark = 9 out of 20

EXAMPLE: Assignment 2 = 25% (i.e. Marked out of 25)

10% of 25 = 2.5 marks (Round it off to 3)

Students assignment was submitted 1 days late = 1 X 3 = 3 marks as penalty
Students paper was marked and the student received 21 marks
Penalty applied and final mark = 21 3 = 18 Marks
Final Mark = 18 out of 25
