AIM
To determine the following properties by tensile testing of given polymeric materials Teflon and
HDPE
1.
2.

7.

Elastic Modulus =
Yield strength (from graph)
Tensile strength (from graph)
Fracture strength (from graph)
% total elongation = 100*(lf- lo/lo)
% elastic elongation = 100*(ly - lo/lo)
% plastic elongation = 100*(lf- ly/ly)

PRINCIPLE
The basic principle of this experiment is to apply load on polymer specimen using Instron 1046
(Table model) plastic testing machine until the specimen fracture. According to machine graph
data stress strain curve was plotted and using this stress strain curve required properties are
determined.
Apparatus &Material Required
Instron 1046 (Table model) plastic testing machine, Teflon, HDPE specimen, Vernier calliper,
Graph paper

Observation & calculation of Teflon specimen

Tensile test of Teflon was not completed because its fracture was not occur.
Result
Teflon shows more than 350 % elongation and its fracture was not occur thats why we cant
draw its stress-strain curve and also not calculated its properties.
Observation & calculation of HDPE specimen

Magnification = 8 times
Original length (G.L.) = 9.975 cm
Fracture Length (Final length) = 11.24 cm
Width= 0.445 cm
Thickness= 0.1 cm

Group # 3 (Lab Report 3)

Area = (length)(width) = (9.975)(0.445) = 4.43887 cm2

Results
Elastic Modulus = Stress/ Strain
= 1.3 GPa
Yield Strength
According to graph yield strength is 28.7 MPa
Tensile Strength
As the maximum stress which PP specimen bear before plastic deformation 29MPa so
this is its tensile strength.
Fracture strength
= 45 kg/cm2
% total elongation from graph
= 13%
% elastic elongation from graph
= 9.1%
% plastic elongation from graph
= 13 9.1
= 3.9%
Toughness
=2.57 Pa
Discussion
In both of these specimens Teflon shows very high elongation and in experiment fracture was not
occur, this shows that it has very high ductility this might be due to the start of orientation of the
molecules of Teflon in structure. HDPE shows more elastic behaviour and its plastic deformation
region was small showing that although it was a ductile material but its ductility is less.
