ORAL CAVITY
function
- ingestion
- fragmentation
- moistening
mastication (chewing) coordinated movements of the mandible, lips and
tongue; cutting and grinding by teeth
structures of mouth tongue, teeth, major and minor salivary glands,
tonsils
PARTS
vestibule between the lips, cheeks and teeth
oral cavity proper behind the teeth
- bounded by superiorly hard, soft palates
inferiorly tongue, floor of the mouth
posteriorly entrance to the pharynx

ORAL MUCOSA
lines oral cavity
function
- protection (mechanical, infection)
- sensation (temperature, touch, pain, taste)
- secretion (saliva)
continuous with skin, but different
- darker (vessels, thickness of the epithelium, keratinization)
- no appendages (hair follicles, nails, sweat and sebaceous glands)
COMPONENTS
1- stratified squamous epithelium
2- lamina propria mucosae
3- submucosa cheeks, lips, parts of hard palate
- loose fatty and glandular CT = flexible attachment
3- OR mucoperiosteum gingiva, parts of hard palate
- mucosa attached to periosteum, no submucosa = firm attachment
TYPES
masticatory
lining
specialized

ORAL MUCOSA
MASTICATORY MUCOSA
location site of frictional and shearing stress gingiva, hard palate
1- keratinized / parakeratinzed stratified squamous epithelium
2- lamina propria
- thick papillary layer loose CT, blood vessels, nerves
- deep reticular layer more-dense CT, blends with periosteum
3- submucosa (fatty and glandular zone of hard palate)
3- OR mucoperiosteum (gingiva, hard palate raphe)

ORAL MUCOSA
LINING MUCOSA
location lips, cheeks, alveolar mucosal surface, floor of the mouth, inferior
surfaces of the tongue, soft palate
1- non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium (vermilion border
keratinized)
- stratum basale
- stratum spinosum
- stratum superficiale
2- lamina propria fewer, shorter papillae; loose CT, blood vessels, nerves
3- submucosa (not in the inferior tongue surface)
- bundles of collagen, elastic fibres bind submucosa to the underlying
muscle
- minor salivary glands (lips, cheeks, tongue)
- larger blood vessels, nerves, lymphatic vessels
SPECIALIZED MUCOSA
sensation of taste
dorsal surface of the tongue lingual papillae and taste buds

PALATE
HARD PALATE
bone
keratinized (paraker.) stratified squamous epithelium (masticatory mucosa)
mucoperiosteum (raphe, gingiva)
submucosa
- fatty zone adipose tissue
- glandular zone mucous glands

uvula

PALATE
SOFT PALATE
skeletal muscle
nasopharyngeal part
- pseudostratified columnar
ciliated epith. (respiratory),
seromucous glands in submucosa
