an has always been helpless before the Nature.

Everybody knows it, even then people continue
to tamper with the nature. They are not ready to arrest
their greed. As the tampering grows, people pay the
heavier price. The rapid change in climate is basically
the result of this burgeoning tampering with the Nature.
The devastating floods in Chennai and other parts
of Tamil Nadu in November-December 2015 was
also the outcome of the climate change. Rains began
after Diwali and continued to be getting heavier. But
the poor drainage system did not allow the water to
flow outside the city. The drainage system collapsed
due to various reasons including the excessive use
of polythene bags by people. As a result the entire
city submerged under water. Two to three stories of
houses in some areas were under flood water resulting
in heavy loss of lives and property. People had to stay
on roofs of the houses for many days and it became
very difficult to rescue them or to provide any relief
including meals, drinking water, medicines, clothes.
etc. In this situation, however, their own houses were
submerged and their own families needed help, the RSS
swayamsevaks rushed to different areas with immediate
relief. Around 6000 swayamsevaks joined the relief and
rescue operation, which continued for many weeks.
In the first phase, they distributed relief material to
the victims and in the second phase they cleaned the
streets, consoled the victims and also organised health
camps for the sick. The experiment of telemedicine by
Mata Amritanandamayi Devi Math also proved to be
very helpful. In the third phase the Swayamsevaks are
formulating plans for rehabilitation of the flood victims.
A report in this issue highlights different aspects of the
natures fury.
The second Akhil Bharatiya Mahila Abhyas
Varg for women workers of Rashtriya Sewa Bharati
was organised in Kanyakumari from November 27 to
29. Apart from Akhil Bharatiya Sewa Pramukh Shri
Suhasrao Hiremath and many other senior adhikaris,

RSS Akhil Bharatiya Mahila Samanvya Pramukh Sushri

Geetatai Gunde addressed the workers. She specifically
stressed the need to educate adolescent girls about the
use of social media.
The eighth national convention of Saksham also
took place in Kanyakumari in December. About 400
delegates from 37 Prants took part. The convention
elected the new executive also. RSS Sahsarkaryavah
Dr Krishna Gopal and Union Minister of Social Justice
and Empowerment Shri Thavarchand Gehlot addressed
the workers.
The new executive of Rashtriya Sewa Bharati
was also elected in Kanyakumair on November 30. Shri
Siddhinath Singh and Shri Yashpal Gupta were elected
new President and Treasurer respectively. A report
carries these details also.
The issue also contains a report on relief and rescue
operation carried out by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak
Sangh Jankalyan Samiti workers during the fire that
broke out at Danu Nagar Sewa Basti of Kandivali
East in Mumbai on December 7. The swayamsevaks
reconnected 70 children to their parents who had lost
them due to the fire. They distributed relief material
worth Rs 25 lakh for five days.
There is another interesting report highlighting the
activities being carried out by Pujit Rupani Memorial
Trust for the uplift of rag pickers in Rajkot, Gujarat. The
Trust, which is run by Rupani family of the city, has
made adequate arrangements for education, health, etc
for the street children. This project has brought about
a major change in the lives of rag pickers. During the
last 20 years the projects has rehabilitated more than a
1000 children.
Kindly continue to send your valuable feedback so
that we can provide you the material you desire.

Chennai Floods

Timely Action Saves Lives

The commendable relief and rescue operation carried out by Sangh swayamsevaks
during Chennai floods reaffirmed that the RSS is always in forefront to wipe the
tears of the helpless people during any calamity and also that the Sangh workers
are synonym to sewa.
 K. Padmakumar, RSS Dakshin Kshetra Sewa Pramukh

he recent Chennai tragedy provides lessons both to

the state Government and the society. During the
tsunami of 2004, the coastal areas of Chennai almost
ruined, but the State Government didn't try to plan any
project for disaster management. Another reason for
State's failure in providing faster relief to the victims
was that it ignored the Central Government directions
regarding strong disaster management measures. It was
also a result of not providing proper waste management

measures at par with the rapid development of the

metropolitan city.
Since plastic waste and similar other nondegradable substances are not processed properly,
the water does not seep into the interior of soil even
after small rainfall. This is what happened in Chennai.
Construction work in wetlands and mangrove forest areas
also led to extensive flood. It was seen in the area where
the Chennai Airport is situated. That is why the whole
area was submerged in water. The flood in the Chennai
airport was due to the filling of marshy areas ruthlessly.
Here even the aeroplanes drifted away in flood.
All states including Kerala should learn a lesson
from Chennai disaster. Keralites have the bad habit of
using plastic too much and throwing away carelessly.
Flats and huge malls are being constructed there by
filling vast paddy fields. So, we should take precaution
so that Kerala does not become another Chennai soon.
In Chennai, there were about 800 ponds and 100
lakes. Most of them have been filled and permission

has been granted to construct huge buildings over them.

Thus, there was no channel for water to flow away. The
society has also learnt in this disaster that money do
not have much role during natural calamities and that
neighbours should help and comfort each other during
such situations.

"We would have died, if you hadn't come"

A Muslim family consisting of a mother and her
only son was stranded in the first floor of a house. The 20
year old son had high fever. The swayamsevaks reached
there on time and rescued them. The swayamsevaks
folded their hands gladly when the mother said with
tears that they would have died there if they didn't reach
and rescued them. The happiness in saving a family was
evident in their faces.

"The only hope is in RSS"

Chennaiites are familiar with the tricycles
carrying fish and other materials. But, this time the
swayamsewaks were shifting children and elderly
people to safe places in these tricycles from flood
affected houses. An old Muslim man, who handed over
his grand child to swayamsevaks, vehemently told that
their only hope was in RSS.
There was heavy rainfall in Chennai and
surrounding areas after Deepavali. The districts of
Thiruvalloor, Kadaloor and Thoothukudy were also
hit by disaster due to rain. Even the State Government
machinery stoodstill due to the excessive number
of calamity affected people, lack of relief measures
and inactivity of disaster management. There the

RSS workers came forward for relief measures. They

provided full-fledged support to the Government
disaster management measures.
The RSS workers, who lent a helping hand of
love and service while Chennai was suffering from
the calamity, were realising the words of the late
third Sarsanghachalak Shri Bala Saheb Deoras. While
referring to Sangh work, Deoarasji had remarked that
Sangh is the face of swayamsevaks who wipes the
tears of the needy and unhappy people.
The history of Tamil Nadu has witnessed
the service works conducted by swayamsevaks
and associated organisations during the flood,
which engulfed the whole Chennai while the
Government machinery was a total failure. About
6000 swayamsevaks actively participated in the relief
measures when 75 lakh population was affected by
flood in Chennai alone.
The life in Chennai slowly returned to normalcy
as the Sangh workers worked tirelessly under the
leadership of former Akhil Bharatiya Sewa Pramukh
Shri K. Suryanarayana Rao, Prant Pracharak Shri Ravi
Kumar, Karyavah Shri Sambamoorthy and Prant Sewa
Pramukh Shri Ramaraja Sekhara n.
The relief measures by Sewa Bharati could
provide food and other essential commodities to the
affected people. A high level government official who
knew about the capability of Sewa Bharati had told
his co-workers on the first day of the flood to "Inform
the RSS workers. We need their help." And the same
happened also.

The crux of religion lies in purity of mind and selflessness.

instructions from their leaders. It is also to be noted that

many workers outside the State also participated. The
materials collected from different areas were distributed
systematically. A survey on the loss took place and a
preparation of tables of essential commodities to be
distributed have also been done.

There was very heavy downpour after November

23.The roads drifted away, traffic came to a standstill,
nobody could move around. Important personalities
were shifted to hotels from their homes for the first time.
Families took refuge in marriage halls and schools.
The dried up ponds overflowed, which led to flood in
different areas. Water level reached even second and
third floors of flats in Mudichur, a place near Chennai
and Thambaram.
At least 25 lakh people stranded in Chennai where
severely affected by the flood calamities. The electricity
was cut off. Even petroleum and diesel distribution
stopped. Only 50 tanker lorries managed to supply fuels
compared to 500 lorries before the flood.
The swayamsevaks started relief work even
during the initial stages of the calamity. In many areas
of the city, the Sangh workers opened relief camps by
their own will. The Sangh activists worked vigilantly
providing security, relief and self-confidence to the
affected people. The city was divided into 15 zones for
sewa work. Arrangements were made in each zone for
relief management, meeting of workers and collection
of materials.

Largest amount of materials for relief measures

was collected from Tiruppur district. Tiruppur, the
Baniyan city was in the forefront in order to wipe the
tears of the Chennai people. Materials worth 7.5 crore
reached from Tiruppur alone. As soon as the news
about the mishap in Chennai spread, the authorities of
Vivekananda Vidyalaya in Tiruppur held a meetings
of teachers and instructions were given to procure
essentials, especially food materials.
Next day itself, the teachers and students
collectively sent 19,000 packets of Chapati to Chennai.
Later, Sripuram Trust and certain other organisations
together collected 3.5 lakh Chapatis. An example of
some of the very rare scenes was a seventh class student
from Vivekananda Academy, Tiruppur, donated his
savings of Rs 1500 to the relief fund and became a
role model.
Doctors from Kerala and Karnataka also reached
Chennai for service. On December six, RSS workers
in Kerala collected relief fund for Chennai. In the first
phase itself, two lakh mats, bedsheets, one lakh buckets,
mugs and food materials were distributed via Sewa
Bharati. Former Akhil Bharatiya Sewa Pramukh Shri
K Suryanarayana Rao briefed the press at the relief
management centre. He explained various kinds of
services carried out by swayamsevaks. Clothes, candles,

The four-story building in Purasaivakom

Azhakappa Road became the head office of the relief
work. It was planned that there would be 73 centres and
each would have its Pramukh.
Many sub groups were formed to take care of stay,
relief management, drinking water, medical facilities,
office, meetings of workers, collection of funds.
Kshetra Pracharak Shri Sthanumalayan and Kshetra
Karyavah Shri Rajendran were also present to give
direction. Workers came forward for relief even without

match boxes, sanitary napkins, baniyans and other

essential materials were distributed to households who
lost everything in the calamity.
When water entered the house of District
Sahkaryavah Shri Manali Chokkalingam, he took his
wife and children to another house and joined the relief
measures. The Karyavahs Selvan and Pallam Senthil
also actively participated in the Sewa activities. Other
Sangh leaders including Zilla Sampark Pramukh
Shri Dharmalingam and his wife also got involved
completely in service activities.
Hundreds of women also participated in the sewa
activities. While distributing materials and food items
to the public, a sewa worker told them that "you are
all our brothers and sisters. We have not assembled to
give or collect alms. Providing food and other facilities
to our brothers and sisters is our duty."
It is to be noted that swayamsevaks in Thambaram
and Willavakom areas had immediately started
relief measures much before the Police or Disaster
Management team reached the scene. Sangh workers
commanded love and affection of people through their
service activities and not by any propaganda.
In Tamil Nadu, around 6000 swayamsevaks in
112 centres participated in Sewa activities. Materials
worth around 17 crore including 12 lakh chapattis,
50,000 bed sheets, 20 lakh packets of biscuits were
distributed through Sewa Bharati.
A highlight of Chennai relief works was timely,
active and devoted services of Hindu organisations.
The services of other religious organisations were
confined to propaganda. The unique union of Hindu
organisations like RSS, Sewa Bharati and others like
Sri Ramakrishna Matt, Mata Amritanandamayi Matt,
Jain organisations, Business magnets, was a great
experience.
The telemedicine by Mata Amritanandamayi
Matt caught the attention of many. It was a blessing
to many in the city when the medical intervention was
essential. Sri Ramakrishna Matt lent a helping hand in
coastal areas, remote areas and such places where help
was badly needed. Considering the valuable services
extended by fishermen community in coastal areas, they

were invited and congratulated by Sri Ramakrishna

Matt in Mylapore.
The services lent by the Centre, armed forces,
Union Ministers, officials were also appreciated. The
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi made a visit to
Chennai and announced Rs 2000 crore relief package.
The toll collection was suspended for two weeks as per
the instruction of the PM. Army, Navy and Air force
and paramilitary forces also got involved in rescue
operations. Union Energy Minister ordered to provide
free electricity to TN. Railway distributed lakhs of
packets of drinking water. Telecommunication Ministry
also extended necessary cooperation.
All associated organisations like the Vidya
Bharati, the Rashtra Sevika Samiti, the BMS and
the BJP, etc were also involved in various activities.
Senior Sangh leaders from Akhil Bharatiya, Kshatra
and Prant level visited the relief centres and addressed
the workers. National Executive member of RSS Shri
Sethumadhavan visited Krompet and Tambaram and
provided necessary guidelines to the workers.
The Sewa activities during Chennai flood proved
that RSS is always there to wipe the tears of helpless
people during any calamity and that Sangh workers are
synonymous with charity work.

The Saviors

on December 7, 2015 witnessed devastating fire.
As the news of fire spread the swayamsevaks from
Kanti Nagar and Tanaji Nagar Bastis rushed to the
spot and started making efforts to extinguish the fire.
But the fire was beyond control. The other workers
also rushed the spot and proper relief and rescue
operation began within an hour under the banner of
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Jankalyan Samiti. The
atmosphere at the Basti was highly tense due to fire.
The people were somehow trying to save their lives and

property. The Swayamsevaks joined them and started

making efforts to first arrest the spread of fire. Because
of the turmoil, about 70 children got separated from
their parents. They were collected at a safer place and
after the fire was arrested they were handed over to their
parents. The Jankalyan Samiti made arrangements for
the displaced people at nearby Lokhandwala grounds.
The atmosphere was acutely tense. People were
running here and there to save their own lives. Nobody
thought of the children, old, physically challenged,
blind or the injured. A womans foot had severely

Other people were running over her body to save their
lives. A swayamsevak, Shashi Bhushan Sharma, who
was engaged in removing LPG cylinders from the Basti
to arrest further damage, noticed the helpless lady.
Without wasting any time he lifted her in his arms and
shifted to a safer place. If she was not lifted within
minutes she would have lost her life. There was chaos
and turmoil all round. Under these circumstances, the
volunteers were very keen to shift the affected people
to safer places. Makeshift arrangements were made
at Lokhandawala Maidan for the victims. Special
arrangements were made for children and senior
citizens, to trace the lost children and hand them over
to their parents, to provide

to stay near their devastated houses.
It looked as if they had lost their
appetite along with their homes and

afresh, it was essential that they are
provided sufficient food in the first
instance and then encourage them to
start rebuilding the houses. It is for
this purpose that the RSS volunteers
made arrangements for cooking for
the affected people in the Basti itself
and served to them. For five days, free
breakfast, meals and milk for kids for
nearly 5000 residents of the Basti were
provided. The caterers spent lakhs of rupees from their
own pockets instead of asking anybody for money for
this purpose. The RSS volunteers had brought cereals,
oils and rice from their own homes. People of the nearby
areas were also impressed by the transparency of the
work done by the RSS workers and inspired by the
spirit of RSS workers; they came forward to extend a
helping hand to the affected people.
The relief work continued non-stop for five days
under the banner of RSS Jankalyan Samiti in a highly
disciplined manner. From Dahisar to Jogeshwari, nearly

As a Pandal was erected at the hillock near the

instead of supplying them cooked food, they had to be
provided with all the items for making food like rice,
vegetables, oils, spices, biscuits, milk, tea, stoves for

For a better Tomorrow

any children collecting garbage can be seen in

the streets from early morning to late evening.
Whatever is the season, whether rains, cold or hot,
their daily life begins from collecting the rags and
ends with it everyday. The so-called civilised people
do not even allow them to come their closer, forget
extending any help. Many scold them by calling
names. In this situation the life which begins in the
garbage basically ends in the garbage or some of
them join any criminal activity after growing. Rupani
family of Rajkot pledged to change this picture. The
family was very disturbed with the untimely passing
away of their child Pujit. But in order to make the
memories of Pujit permanent they decided to ensure
that the other children do not die untimely. Seeing
the picture of Pujit among the rag pickers the family
formed Shri Pujit Rupani Memorial Trust and started
the project on January 12, 1995.
The Trust made a small beginning by picking up
60 child rag pickers to bring them into the mainstream
by providing education, food and inculcating cultural
values. Under this project over a period of nearly
twenty years, thousands of children have been

benefited. Encouraged over the outcome, the Trust has

launched the following 12 projects.
Integrated Programme for Street Children:
Children in the age group of 6 to 14 year from
deprived and underprivileged sections of the society
are given basic education in Gujarati, besides the
cultural and moral values by qualified teachers.
Games, entertainment programmes and picnics to
historical places are also arranged for the children to
ensure their overall growth. Notebooks, school bags,
uniforms and health care facilities are also granted free
of cost. Presently, about seven centres function under
the project in Rajkot and thousands of children have
been benefited so far. More than 325 beneficiaries are
now self-employed.
Mobile Toy Library: To provide entertainment
and knowledge to the children in slum areas,
arrangements of modern toys were made. A mobile
Maruti van was donated by Rotary Midtown Club,
Rajkot, for the project. The van is equipped with the
toys, magic shows, cartoon films, puppet shows, etc.
It visits three centres in the morning and three centres
in the evening for the benefit of the children.

Haryana

An effective campaign against Addiction

G
eographically, Haryana is surrounded by Punjab,
Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh which are very
prosperous. However Haryana too is not a poor state, it
has a large number of economically deprived people.
Thus, efforts are needed to bring these deprived people
at par. A good beginning in this regard was made in
Jind in 1978. However, systematically the work began
in 1980 under the guidance of Shri Jaswant Rai and
Shri Ram Kishan Singhal.

With the active cooperation of the workers, a free

dispensary was set up in Sewa Basti under the guidance
of Dr Kadam Singh, a philanthropist. In the beginning,
many teething troubles were encountered like poor
response from the people of the Basti. But gradually
the people started cooperating because of the untiring
efforts of the volunteers. Finally the dispensary started
working satisfactorily. Presently in Jind, the dispensary
is running under the overall guidance of Shri Suresh
Mangla. Gradually, sewa activities were started in threefour districts. Registration of Sewa Bharati was done in
Jind, but in the 1990s its office was shifted to Rohtak.
Under the guidance of the then Sarsanghachalak
Shri Balasaheb Deoras in 1988-89 during the birth
centenary of Dr Hedgewar, funds were collected for
the expansion of the sewa activities. In Haryana, Shri
Kashmirilal was made Prant Sewa Pramukh.
After Jind, Dr Ganpat Rai Batra and Dr Ram Lal
(both of them are no more now) set up a free dispensary
in Rajendra Nagar Sewa Basti and Kabir Basti in
Sonipat. Here also, in the initial stage, difficulties

were encountered but soon these were overcome.

Later on, Dr. Ganpat Rai through his untiring efforts
set up a free dispensary at Barota village. By opening
a tailoring centre and a Bal Sanskar Kendra Dr. Ganpat
Rai brought a big change in the lives of the villagers.
Similarly, the activities of Sewa Bharati extended
to all the 21 districts of Haryana. The activities were
carried out under the guidance of Shri Nand Kumar
from 2005 to 2012. In Bhiwani, 28 service projects are
working properly. Shri Arjunlal and Shri Prehlad Rai
Solanki, Vice Presidents of Sewa Bharati, are trying
their best to make the children aware of the traditional
Bharatiya values. They keep on sending children to
training camps.
In Hisar, 30 projects are going on. Sewa Bharati
is also doing good work in Kurukshetra. A girl child
from a backward community came into contact of Sewa
Bharati. In a short span, she started running a Sanskar
Kendra. She was a meritorious student. While running
the centre, she worked hard and scored first position
in M.A. (Music) from Kurukshetra University and
received gold medal from the then President of India
Smt Pratibha Patil. At present, the that girl is Principal
of A.S. Jain College, Ambala and is in close contact
of Sewa Bharati.
Shri Sriniwas Harodia of Charkhi Dadri in
Bhiwani has been running a prohibition campaign for
the last 20 years. He has been successful in convincing
hundreds of people to shun the evil habit of drinking. He
is mainly concentrating on rural folk for this purpose.
After reaching the village, first of all he performs a
yajna and afterwards he administers a pledge to them
to quit addiction.
In Panchkula, a young man from a poor family
fell sick. Due to shortage of funds, his parents could
not afford his treatment and left him on the road. One
of the Sewa Bharati volunteers Shri Ram Swarup
Varma shifted him to a hospital and ensured necessary
treatment. After recovering, the young man learnt
driving and is now a driver.

Learning is a lifelong process. There is no age for learning.
