Determine whether the mixture is a saturated liquid, a mixture of vapor and liquid, or a
saturated vapor. Explain your answer.
It is desired to bring the mixture to its bubble point (saturated liquid, / = 0 ). If
temperature is maintained at 100C, to what total pressure must the mixture be subjected
to reach the bubble point?
If pressure is maintained at 15 atmospheres, to what temperature must the mixture be
adjusted to reach the bubble point? An answer within a few degrees centigrade is
acceptable.

5. Prepare T-xy and x-y diagrams of water and isopropanol at 101.3 kPa by bubble point
calculations, use Modified Raoult Law with NRTL Model. Comparate with experimental data, Is it
possible use the NRTL model to predict the vapor-liquid equilibrium in this mixture? Why?
6. Exercise 12, M. F. Doherty and M F. Malone. Conceptual Design of Distillation Systems.
7. Consider a mixture of five hydrocarbons, which can be considered to form ideal mixture in both
the liquid and vapor phases. The composition of the mixture is given below, along with constants
for each pure hydrocarbon for the vapor pressure function ln(P) = A-D/T, where P is in
atmospheres and T is in Kelvin. The mixture is passed through a flash unit at an outlet pressure of
six atmospheres.
Over what range of outlet temperatures will the output from the flash unit include both a
liquid and vapor phase? What are the compositions of the liquid and vapor phases at the
extremes of this temperature range?
If the outlet temperature is midway between those found in a) above, what fraction of the
outlet flow is vapor? What are the compositions of the liquid and vapor phases?
If it is desired that 90% of the C3s in the feed leave in the vapor stream, what are the
compositions of the vapor and liquid streams? What is the outlet temperature?
8. A three component mixture containing 30% A, 30% B, and 40% C, is to be run through a
continuous steady-state flash unit. The exit pressure from the flash unit will be one atmosphere.
A is non-condensible (vapor pressure approaches infinity) and C is non-volatile (vapor pressure
approaches zero) The vapor pressure of B is given by:
ln ! = 10.465 3890/
where PB is in atm and T is in Kelvins.
If the unit is operated so the flowrates of liquid and vapor leaving the unit are equal,
determine the compositions of the outlet streams and the outlet temperature.
If the unit is operated so the 30% of the B in the feed leaves the unit in the vapor stream.,
determine the compositions of the outlet stream and the outlet temperature.
