God’s Word

“ #12. Death: Destination For All Humanity ”

Hebrews 2:14-15 (NASB) 14Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He
(Christ) Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render
powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and might free those who
through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.

Genesis 2:7 (NASB) 7Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

(Some translations (KJV) use “soul” instead of “being.” However the Hebrew root
word is “Nephesh” which is used correctly as the “life principle” according to the
Hebrew language of the Old Testament and clearly confirmed through out the Bible
contextually and grammatically. More proof of this is provided throughout the rest of
this study and I’ll be willing to provide plenty more if necessary)

Genesis 2:17 (NASB) 17but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not
eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die."

Romans 5:12 (NASB) 12Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world,
and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned

Genesis 3:4 (NASB) 4The serpent said to the woman, "You surely will not die!

Romans 6:23 (NASB) 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal
life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Christ ALONE has immortality. (Read verse below) However this immortality has been
given to the whole human race through the Gospel ALONE as a gift (See 2 Timothy 1:10
also below). It is up to us whether we want to accept the gift and as a result experience
immortality, or we can reject it and keep the mortal life we have inherited through Adam.
(The life we’re born with.)

1 Timothy 6:12-16 (NASB) 12Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to
which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many
witnesses. 13I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of
Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14that you keep the
commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
15
which He will bring about at the proper time--He who is the blessed and only
Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone possesses immortality and

dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see To Him be honor and
eternal dominion! Amen.

2 Timothy 1:10 (NASB) 10but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior
Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through
the gospel…

John 5:24 (NASB) 24"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes
Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out
of death into life.

Matthew 25:41 (NASB) 41"Then He will also say to those on His left, ' Depart from Me,
accursed ones, into the eternal (other versions “everlasting”) fire which has been prepared
for the devil and his angels;

What example does scripture give of this “eternal/everlasting Fire” or the term
“forever and ever?”

F. Y. I. -The term “everlasting” used in the New Testament in the context of the fire
prepared for the wicked, is translated from the Greek word “aionios” which means that
the effect of the fire is eternal, not that the fire itself will burn forever and ever, but just
until it consumes what it is burning. So according to the Bible the wicked will not be
burning in Hell fire forever and ever but just until they are completely consumed,
however whoever is thrown in to that fire, will be exterminated from the whole universe
FOREVER, to NEVER again return into existence. This is the wages of sin mentioned in
Romans 6:23.

Jude 7 (NASB) 7just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in
the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are
exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

Jonah 2:6 (NASB) 6"I descended to the roots of the mountains The earth with its bars
was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my
God.

Malachi 4:1-3 (NASB) 1"For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace; and all
the arrogant and every evildoer will be chaff; and the day that is coming will set them
ablaze," says the LORD of hosts, "so that it will leave them neither root nor branch."
2
"But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its
wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall. 3"You will tread
down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day which I
am preparing," says the LORD of hosts.

Revelation 14:11 (NASB) 11"And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever;
they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever
receives the mark of his name."

2 Thessalonians 1:9 (NASB) 9These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away
from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power

Nahum 1:9 (NASB) 9Whatever you devise against the LORD, He will make a complete
end of it. Distress will not rise up twice.

Ezekiel 18:20 (KJV) 20The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the
iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the
righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall
be upon him.

F.Y.I. Other translations use the word “soul” in this verse, interchangeably with
“person.” (See same verse in the NASB translation below)

Ezekiel 18:20 (NASB) 20"The person who sins will die…

Amazingly this is the exact same context and grammar that the word “soul” is correctly
used through out the ENTIRE Bible. Unfortunately some of our English translations
have thrown many people off by this word, when they use it OUT OF CONTEXT. Please
note that the word “soul” is used 1600 times in the Bible BUT NEVER once used in the
context of being IMMORTAL.

When a person dies are they conscious of any thing?

Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6 (NASB) 5For the living know they will die; but the dead do not know
anything, nor have they any longer a reward, for their memory is forgotten. 6Indeed their
love, their hate and their zeal have already perished, and they will no longer have a
share in all that is done under the sun.

Psalms 115:17,18 (NASB) 17The dead do not praise the LORD, nor do any who go down
into silence;

Isaiah 38:18, 19 (KJV) 18For the grave cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate thee:
they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. 19The living, the living, he shall
praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.

Genesis 3:19 (NASB) 19By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to
the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall
return." (Gen. 2:7)

What about the word “spirit” in some verses?

www.OneTrueGospel.org 3
(Here is 1 example of MANY) Ecclesiastes 12:7 (KJV) 7Then shall the dust return to the
earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. (See James 2:26 ( in
margin) in the KJV for CLEAR explanation on what this word means. And see also the
Hebrew word for “spirit” which is “ruwach” and means breath/wind) (For more info on
the use of this word that is used throughout the whole Bible, please contact me to go step
by step through ANY questions you may have. You’ll be amazed as you see how people
have taken these types of verses out of context and come up with their OWN
understanding)

What about the word Ghost in other verses?

(Here is 1 example of MANY) Genesis 25:8 (KJV) 8Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and
died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people)

F.Y.I- The word “Ghost” that you see in some English translations, is translated from
the Hebrew word “Gava” which means to expire, or breath out before death. Notice
how other modern translations have more accurately translated this verse (See Gen. 25:8
from NASB translation below) as well as many other verses that have confused so many
people.

Genesis 25:8 (NASB) 8Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man
and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people.

What about us believers?

1 Corinthians 15:51-53 (NASB) 51Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but
we will all be changed, 52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for
the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
53
For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on
immortality.

Philippians 3:20-21 (NASB) 20For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we
eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21who will transform the body of our
humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that
He has even to subject all things to Himself.

The 1st death, (the one people are dying today) is referred to as a “sleep” over 50 times
in the Bible. Here are 2 of MANY examples.

John 11:11-14 (NASB) 11This He said, and after that He said to them, "Our friend
Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep." 12The
disciples then said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover." 13Now Jesus
had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep. 14So Jesus
then said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,

Job 14:10-12 (NASB) 10"But man dies and lies prostrate Man expires, and where is he?
11
"As water evaporates from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dried up, 12So man
lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no longer, He will not awake nor be
aroused out of his sleep.

What hope does the Bible give to those who have fallen asleep/died in Christ?

1 Thessalonians 4:13, 14, 16, 17 (NASB) 13But we do not want you to be uninformed,
brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have
no hope. 14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with
Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 16For the Lord Himself will descend from
heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the
dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up
together with in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the
Lord.

When did Jesus promise his disciples He would take them to heaven?

John 14:3 (NASB) 3"If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive
you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

Where did He go?

Acts 1:10, 11 (NASB) 10And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was
going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. 11They also said, "Men of
Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from
you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into
heaven."

Of whom does the 2nd death (The death by the fire that has an eternal effect) have no
power?

Revelation 20:6 (NASB) 6Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first
resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God
and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years.

The Bible speaks of 2 kinds of deaths:

1st Death: A sleep death-will be followed by a resurrection.

2nd Death: Eternal death-wages of sin, good-bye to life FOREVER! This death we
believers will NOT experience because we are saved through the gospel of Jesus Christ
that has abolished this death for everyone, but ONLY those who ACCEPT what he has
done, will be EXEMPT from this 2nd Death.

Who then, will experience this 2nd death?

www.OneTrueGospel.org 5
Revelation 20:14-15 (NASB) 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.
This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15And if anyone's name was not found written
in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Matthew 25:41-46 (NASB) 41"Then He will also say to those on His left, 'Depart from
Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his
angels; 42for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave
Me nothing to drink; 43I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did
not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.' 44"Then they themselves also
will answer, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or
sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?' 45"Then He will answer them, 'Truly I
say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do
it to Me.' 46"These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal
life."

The choice is ours. We can keep this mortal life that deserves the 2nd death sentence
and continue rejecting the gospel, OR pass out from death unto life through the gift
of the gospel and INSTANTLY receive eternal life.

John 3:19 (NASB) 19"This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and
men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.

Christ tells ALL in John 10:10 (NASB) 10"The thief comes only to steal and kill and
destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
