11. Course Description:
Basic concepts in physics: physical quantity and physical quantity relations, dimensions of physical
quantity and the principle of dimensional homogeneity, dimensionless variables; basic concepts in fluid
mechanics: continuum assumption, methods of description: Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions, field
quantity and classification of flow fields: geometric and kinematics of fluid motion: pathlines, streamlines, and
streaklines; forces and stresses in fluids: pressure and pressure force, shear stress and shear force; convection
flux and Reynold s transport theorem; physical laws for finite control volume: conservations of mass, linear
momentum, and energy; conservation of angular momentum with application to turbomachines; physical laws
for infinitesimal control volume: conservation of mass and linear momentum, introduction to NavierStokes and
Eulers equations; Bernoullis equation from momentum and conservation of mechanical energy viewpoints;
introduction to vorticity and vortex; dimensional analysis: Buckinghams PI theorem, similarity, and model
testing; internal viscous flows, energy consideration in pipe flows and piping system; system; external flows,
boundary layer, and aerodynamic force and moment; applications: turbomachines, model testing, piping and
pumping system, aerodynamic force and moment.
12. Course Outline
12.1. Course Objectives:
a. Ability to determine pathlines and streamlines from given velocity field.
b. Ability to determine shear stress and shear force in fluid flows.
c. Ability to determine hydrostatic pressure and pressure force.
d. Ability to apply the Reynolds Transport Theorem (RTT) to coincident material volume and
control volume.
e. Ability to apply the finite control volume formulation of physical laws to flow systems.
f. Ability to determine the performance of idealized turbomachines.
g. Ability to apply dimensional analysis: Buckinghams PI theorem and similarity, for model testing.
h. Ability to determine mechanical power loss and hydraulic power in piping and pumping systems.
i. Ability to determine aerodynamic lift and drag force on a body.
