ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I never did anything alone. Whatever was accomplished in this country
was accomplished collectively.
Golda Meir
First of all it would be very unfear if I start to post my final works by only
giving credit to myself and without mentioning all the persons that help
me to developed, correct, polish and improve on my work.
To start with I would like to thanks to all BTTE students whom together we
made the elaboration of many peer reviews to help each other on different
aspects such as grammar, topic sentence, reflection statement, and many
other things that we discuss in class.
To Alberto De Vera Jr. my best friend for this project, especially from them
I learn a lot regarding grammar mistakes. Since Alberto is graduated in
BTTE, he helped me to understand how to localize when there is a
sentence transition missing and the connection that I had to develop
between one paragraph and another.
To my college instructress I had no words no thank him for the
amazing work he did with my classmate and me. From hard lectures,
readings, grammar, punctuation, to his personal experiences; this entire
journey in order to achieve the goal of being better writers. The patience,
dedication and way of teaching and speaking that he had with each one of
us is something to admire. I wanted to thank him especially for always
being so able asks any type of question, and always for sending his
feedback and comments on each word and line of our drafts. Maam: You
make me understand something very important for life that I will never
forget: I should never be afraid of expressing out loud my opinion, since is
mine and it could never be wrong. Each of us has a different way of
thinking and seeing the world, and as long as we support with good and
valid argument our points of views, well do fine!

I would like to finish my acknowledgement with a significant phrase that

Helen Keller once said:
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Fraternities and sororities are visible in all colleges and state universities
since the 1700's. They were first established to encourage activities outside
of the classroom. There are exciting volunteer opportunities and social
outlets available in joining these organizations. Not everyone have enough
time once someone enters in. In Greece, fans of sororities and fraternities
argue that their system gives students leadership opportunities and lasting
friendships. This is true in many cases but some sororities and fraternities
have more excuses for getting drunk and doing potentially dangerous
pranks.
In the U.S. hazing has resulted in several deaths and serious injuries.
Matthew Carrington was killed at Californias Chico State University on
February 2, 2005. Hazing is considered a felony in several U.S. states, and
anti-hazing legislation has been proposed in other states. In Indonesia, 35
people died since 1993 as a result of hazing initiation rites. The latest is in
April 2007 when Cliff Muntu died after being beaten by the seniors. In India,
hazing has been banned for the last few years.
Recently, in a historical judgment, the Hon. Supreme Court of India directed
the police to lodge criminal cases against those accused of hazing. State
governments have also been ordered to deal with hazing strictly.
In the Philippines, The family of University of the Philippines National
College of Public Administration and Governance student Cris Anthony
Mendez, who was killed in fraternity hazing rites, is still waiting to get
justice a year after his death. Mendez died allegedly from heavy beating
sustained during Sigma Rho fraternity hazing rites in August last year 2007.

Actually, there are many cases of hazing, reported and not reported that
are classified as criminal acts according to Philippine Jurisprudence.
Indeed joining a fraternity or sorority is not an easy one. In fact it is very
difficult physically and psychologically. Each organization has its own
recruitment and initiation procedure which consists of group and individual
activities. Generally, this is a long process lasting for weeks or even
months. There are requirements for entering a fraternity and sorority.
However, the problem with initiation is that hazing is believed to be a part of
it. This is the most critical controversy known by the public when joining a
fraternity and sorority.
In fact there have been cases brought to court as regards students under
initiation who died because of hazing.
Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to determine the disadvantage of Joining Fraternity and
Sorority of IT Student of Interface Computer College in Davao City.
Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:
1. What are the disadvantage of joining sororities and fraternities?
2. What are the effects of the disadvantage of joining sororities and
fraternities?
Assumption of the study
It is assumed that the IT students of Interface Computer College who joined
this organization had suffer their school works, waste of money for drinking,
partying up and to passed their initiation process.
Theoretical and Conceptual Framework
Theory Base
This study is anchored on the disadvantage of joining fraternities and
sororities. Base on this theory, there are advantages to Greek life, but also
some disadvantages that students ought to consider realistically. Such as,
time commitment, money, image, insularity, and academic concerns.
However, many students also feel that being part of a fraternity or sorority

is unnecessary and they feel they can get along just fine without joining
one. The reasons why they joined this organization are the following:
helping one another, academic excellence, leadership development,
employment opportunities and lifelong brotherhood and sisterhood.
Conceptual Framework
Presented in this section are the variables of the study as shown in the
schematic diagram below.

Variables of the Study
As illustrated in the conceptual framework, there are two variables that are
considered on this study-the joining a fraternities and sororities and the
disadvantage of joining fraternities and sororities of IT students which may
be describe as follows: The first variable refers to the students that would
joined fraternities and sororities not knowing the initiation process
Significance of the Study
This study was undertaken to provide information that would be useful to
the following:
