A Master's degree in Computer and Information
Science provides students with the opportunity
to specialise in a particular area of computer or
information science, especially with regard to
topics pertaining to the exploration of large
volumes of data (data mining), visualisation
(visual computing), and human-computer
interaction.
Computer scientists who graduate from the
University of Konstanz benefit from the
advantageous geographical location tri-border
region of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. In
all three countries IT experts are equally in
demand.

About the university
The University of Konstanz is a campus
university that stands out particularly for its
efficiency. Flat structures and hierarchies
promote flexibility and interdisciplinary
collaboration between or within the 13
departments operating in three faculties:
Sciences, Humanities, and Politics, Law and
Economics. Close dialogue is maintained
between all the groups at the university. Good
communication is the driving force experienced
at all levels of the Culture of Creativity at the
university.
Top-level research, excellence in teaching and
studies, internationality and interdisciplinary
collaboration have been the hallmark of the
University of Konstanz since its foundation as a
Reform University in 1966. This clear orientation
soon led to a unique profile, defined not only
through high quality, but also through
innovation, creativity, and a distinct zest for
research. The strategy of modernisation and
reform from within is being consistently
advanced, and the University of Konstanz's
"success story" (Lord Dahrendorf, 2006) is
experienced by all its members. The consistent
expansion of its strengths, innovative concepts
and ideas within the university's Institutional
Strategy "Modell Konstanz - Towards a Culture
of Creativity" has contributed significantly to the
success of the University of Konstanz since
October 2007 in both phases of the Excellence
Initiative of the German federal and state
governments to promote top-level research at
German universities. Konstanz is therefore one
of the 11 universities whose Institutional
Strategies are being funded by the federal and
state governments to expand top-level
university research. In the first call for proposals
under the Excellence Initiative, the Cluster of
Excellence "Cultural Foundations of Social
Integration" was already approved in 2006. This
was followed by the Konstanz Research School
in Chemical Biology, which was awarded funding
in 2007. In the second phase of the Excellence
Initiative, the profile of the University of
Konstanz was further enhanced in 2012 by the
founding of the new Graduate School of
Decision Sciences.
The University of Konstanz continues to build

and expand its international visibility and its

excellence in research and teaching by
attracting and recruiting outstanding
international researchers and students,
collaborating with excellent, strong research
universities worldwide, and raising its
international competitiveness while, at the
same time, maintaining good ties and contacts
with an international and regional orientation. In
the Times Higher Education Ranking 2013 "THE
100 under 50", the University of Konstanz shone
at 20th place in the international comparison.
This leading international position makes
Konstanz the best German university aged
under 50 years.

About the city
History and Geography
Konstanz is situated in south-west Germany in
the federal state of Baden-Wrttemberg and
shares its border with the Swiss town of
Kreuzlingen. It lies on the shores of the River
Rhine and Lake Constance, central Europe's
second-largest lake, where the borders of
Austria, Germany and Switzerland converge.
Konstanz is the economic and cultural centre of
the Lake Constance region. It is an attractive
business location (light industry, commerce,
high technology), a popular tourist destination
and a lively university town, with more than
15,000 students. With its beautiful location, its
model infrastructure and its diverse range of
cultural and recreational facilities, the town
offers its 85,000 inhabitants a high quality of
life.
Konstanz has a long and rich historical tradition.
The first settlements were erected in Konstanz
Bay in 2000 BC, and the town was given its
name "Constantia" by the Romans in the fourth
century AD. Konstanz has a well-preserved
medieval town and numerous historical
buildings from the Romanesque, Gothic and
Baroque periods. The town has an attractive
shopping centre with a shopping mall,
department stores and small specialist shops.
There is an array of cafs, restaurants, ice
cream parlours, pubs and wine bars.
Culture and Recreation
Konstanz is the home of the oldest running

theatre in Germany and of the famous

Southwest German Philharmonic Orchestra.
There are several museums and art galleries as
well as art centres offering a broad spectrum of
events: art and documentary exhibitions and
concerts in all music genres. Konstanz is the
perfect location for all kinds of outdoor leisure
activities. The region has an excellent network
of routes for walking, cycling, and inline skating
tours. The beaches are a major summer
attraction for relaxing in the sun and swimming
in the lake or the Rhine. The lake offers various
water sports such as sailing, canoeing and
diving, and the nearby Alps provide year-round
enjoyment for skiers, snowboarders, hikers, and
climbers.
Konstanz is also an ideal starting point for
excursions to many attractions in Germany,
Switzerland, Austria, and Liechtenstein. On the
town's doorstep is the famous Flower Island of
Mainau and the Island of Reichenau, a UNESCO
world heritage site. Boat trips can be taken to
beautiful towns around the lake such as
Meersburg, berlingen, and Lindau. The
lakeside town of Friedrichshafen is the home of
the Zeppelin, and the Austrian town of Bregenz
is renowned for its summer festivals, with
spectacular opera and musical performances on
a floating stage in the lake. A boat trip along
one of the most beautiful parts of the Rhine
takes you to the magnificent Rhine Falls at the
Swiss town of Schaffhausen. Major cities such as
Zurich, Basel, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Munich and
Milan are easily reachable from Konstanz.
