The Department of Archaeology and Museums is working to bring some gadis (fortresses), houses of landlords who ruled parts of Telangana
during the Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jah dynasties acting as tax collectors, under the Andhra Pradesh Ancient and Historical Monuments
Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1960 to preserve the rare architecture for the future.
Director, Archaeology and Museums, N.R. Visalatchy, said they had conducted primary survey across the State to identify some of the gadis
under Vernacular Heritage. On Thursday, she visited a site located between Pazzur-Yarragaddagudem villages of Thipparthy mandal.
The department has identified historical temples, megalithic burials, pillars and inscriptions under the Act 336 in all.
The number identified under the Act will go up once the gadis are brought under the fold of the Act.
Ms. Visalatchy said that they had decided to declare gadis as protected monuments since their architecture reflected the culture, raw material
availability in the area, traditions and climate. For instance, Chettinad houses in Tamil Nadu were built in tune with the climate.
The long-roofed houses with sloping tiles were built to withstand heavy rains, she pointed out.
Similarly, most gadis in Telangana were also built with unique architecture. They were known to have huge doors, courtyards, tall boundary
walls built of clay and many other unique features. A researcher undertook a study on these structures across the State and the department
plans to study them thoroughly before declaring them as protected monuments.
The excavation at Pazzur site is to continue for the next 45 to 60 days. If they find prominent monuments during the excavation, she said
they would carry the excavation further.
Meanwhile, Ms. Visalatchy also informed that they would also take some initiatives to protect monuments and megalithic burials by erecting
fencing and improving security, involving locals and voluntary agencies.
A research work on these structures will thoroughly be studied before declaring them as protected monuments
