23rd February 2016

Hello everyone, here we are at Week Four and weve certainly had a smooth start to the
school year. New students have settled in quickly, making friends and enjoying being part of
our school community. I commend students for their excellent behaviour, demonstrating the
positive values we promote. We certainly have top quality staff they started the year
organized, positive and enthusiastic. Thank you also to parents and carers for ensuring your
children were school ready, it makes an enormous difference.
ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance is a key factor for your child/ren to engage with their learning and
succeed at school. To be in the Regular Attendance category (90% and above) students
need to attend at least 45 out of 50 days per term. It is appreciated if all absences are
explained by note, SMS, phone call or in person.
Regular attendance allows children to absorb and build upon their learning.
Children who miss school in early years will have gaps which make learning later in life
more difficult.
Attending school regularly helps students develop confidence, social skills, resilience and
teamworkall great things for your child!
NAPLAN
All students Year 3 and 5 will bring home today a pamphlet with information regarding the
2016 National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). If you wish your
child to be withdrawn from participating in this assessment please contact the school. Closer
to the date you will be given a Student Withdrawal form to complete.
P&C
Thank you to the many people who attended the P&C Annual General Meeting last night. I
would like to congratulate the returning office bearers: President- Lisa Hart, Vice PresidentRoz Porteous, Secretary-Rebecca Collins and new Treasurer Erin Grover. Thanks to the
outgoing Treasurer, Tonia Harrington.
Our Place
Staffed by Ruben De Graaf, Tammy Woods, Heather Maguire and Greg Barber (Chappy)
Our Place is a fabulous hive of activity and a real asset to the school. Students are engaged
in gardening, Art Therapy, sewing, mosaics, jewellery making, construction projects,
spending time with their mentors and more. Parents who have spare time are most
welcome to join the Our Place mentoring program spending 1 hour a week with a
student. Contact Barb Jeremic or any of the Our Place staff for further information.

School Banking
Want to join up for school banking? The easiest way is to
go to the local Commonwealth branch with your drivers
licence and your child's birth certificate and open a Youth
Saver Account. If you already have an account with CBA
you can use online banking to get your child a Youth Saver
account.
Once your child has a Youth Saver account number they
can start participating in school banking. Each Wednesday
fill in a deposit slip, put the money into the banking wallet
and put it into your classs grey banking bag (if you have an
account number but no deposit book put your money, name
and number in a snap lock bag and we will give you a wallet
and deposit book).
Banking bags are taken to the office, the deposits are
processed by parent volunteers and returned to students
the same day. Remember you dont have to bank every
week and it doesnt matter how much you bank. Each
deposit through school will receive a silver token that can
be traded for prizes once they have 10.
Any questions come see us in the interview room in the
school office area Wednesdays 9.30-10.30am, put a note in
with the banking or call Karen 04880 014 534.

Mums Raising Boys - up to the age of 12 years
However well-prepared mothers are logically, the emotional
response to having a boy is often still, Wow! This is unknown
territory. It is true that for many mothers, the idea of raising a
son carries its own set of worries.
As the primary female role model in a boys life, mothers play
an important role in the development of their sons identity
including their ability to be nurturing. This in turn affects how
they relate to others, particularly to girls and women.
This workshop will discuss:
The importance of the mother-son relationship
What boys need from their mums
Practical ways to improve and maintain a positive and
rewarding relationship
Albany Public Library
Wednesday, 6th April 9.30am to 12 noon
$15 per person
Places are limited so please book now. Phone: 9841 9390
Email: library@albany.wa.gov.au
There will also be workshops for Dads Raising Teenage
Girls, Mums Raising Teenage Girls, and Understanding
Angry Emotions. Contact the above for more information.

MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

WHAT IS BULLYING?

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to
follow directions or face increased consequences.
Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts.
For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences
apply ~

Bullying is when a student or group

keep picking on another student. They
try to hurt them physically or
emotionally.
The
behaviour
is
deliberate and repeated.

STEP 1
Student refuses to follow directions.
Verbal warning.
STEP 2
Student still refuses to follow directionsIn-class consequence e.g. Time Out
STEP 3
Student still refuses to follow directionsOut-of-class consequence e.g. Buddy
Class.
STEP 4
Student still refuses to follow directionsRED CARD is sent to the office.
Parents will be requested to attend
school.

SUSPENSION
Students will be immediately
suspended for verbal abuse of
staff and/or violence towards
staff or students.

RE-ENTRY FOLLOWING
SUSPENSION
Students returning from
suspension must be
accompanied by an adult and
will attend the Intervention
Centre (Room 20) where an
Individual Behaviour
Management Plan will be
developed and implemented.

A fight or disagreement between

equal students is not bullying.
HOW TO STOP BULLYING

Tell an adult, it is not dobbing to

ask for help. Both victim and
those bullying will be counselled
and supported.
Do not be a by-stander; if you
witness bullying try to stop it or
report it.
IF YOU ARE BULLYING

Step 1: Warning
Step 2: In school isolation and
counselling at recess and lunch,
parents will be notified
Step 3:
For continued breaches
