Jazz pianist and composer Wynton Charles Kelly, famed for his
"crisp, leaping rhythmic blues" playing style, and expert sight
reading abilities, was known too as being one of the finest
accompanists in the business. Drummer Philly Joe Jones was
one of many musicians to sing his praises, stating that Kelly
"puts down flowers behind a soloist. He never wanted to steal in.
He just put together the right things." Miles Davis called Kelly
"the light for a cigarette. He lights the fire and he keeps it going,"
whilst Cannonball Adderley dubbed him "the world's greatest
accompanist for a soloist." Kelly performed with a vast array of
jazz greats over the years, including Charles Mingus, Benny
Golson, Art Blakey and Lee Morgan, as well as repeated spells
with the bands of Washington and Gillespie, and even playing
bass on a track from vocalist Abbey Lincoln's That's Him!, after
regular bassist Paul Chambers reportedly fell asleep in the studio
following an extended drinking session. In January 1959, Kelly
joined the band of Miles Davis, famously getting the gig after
sitting in when previous pianist Red Garland was late for a club
date. His work with Davis would eventually go on to be his best
known, and included his exceptional performance on the song
'Freddy Freeloader' on Kind Of Blue, the best-selling jazz record
of all time. This 4 CD collection, presented in digitally remastered
format, contains undoubtedly the finest recordings of a criminally
underrated musician.

Garland began his musical career studying clarinet and alto

saxophone under the tutelage of Buster "Prof" Smith, who had
previously been an early mentor of saxophonist Charlie Parker.
Having been drafted into the army in 1941, Garland began to
learn piano whilst stationed Fort Huachuca, Arizona, practicing
relentlessly until his playing quickly became proficient. It was
also around this time that Garland undertook a short-lived
amateur boxing career, racking up 35 professional fights in total
which would include facing a young Sugar Ray Robinson in the
ring, although he would go on to lose this particular bout.
Fortunately, his time spent as a welterweight seemed to have no
negative impact on his performance, and after being discharged
from the army in 1944 he immediately began playing small
venues all over Texas. By the turn of the 1950s, Garland's
stature as a musician had increased incalculably, having
performed with a plethora of jazz greats including Coleman
Hawkins, Lester Young, Ben Webster and Sonny Stitt, as well as
leading his own trio. Garland embarked on without a doubt his
most famous collaboration in 1955 when he was invited to join
Miles Davis' band, which at the time also featured Coltrane,
Philly Joe Jones and Paul Chambers.

Library Voices is a congregation of childhood friends who grew up on a steady diet of basement shows, science fiction, and mid-west
sincerity. Their self-produced third LP, LOVISH, was once again recorded in an old funeral home. The album was mixed by Dave Plowman
and Alex Bonenfant (METZ, Crystal Castles, July Talk).
There was an extended period of time where it looked like LOVISH would never see the light of day. Months of endless touring and
exhaustion in support of Summer of Lust came to a boil late one night in the bowels of the saddest hostel in Amsterdam. The next day
hundreds of rats swarmed their van in Paris. After those highlights the tour started to go south. The band returned home, decided they
needed some space, and agreed to see other people.
(Fast forward twenty four months)
Soon after Library Voices regrouped to begin writing what would become LOVISH singer/guitarist Carl Johnson was jumped, beaten, and
left unconscious in the street in a random act of violence. The attack resulted in blood pooling on the front of his brain, a severe concussion,
an inability to smell bad odors, and a long road to recovery. For a few months it remained uncertain whether he would be able to continue
writing and performing music. Johnson contributed 7 songs to the album, although he still cant detect foul scents. The remaining four tracks,
including the first single Oh Donna and the miserabilist anthem Sunburnt In LA, are fronted by Brennan Ross.
The band, who once printed "Pop As Fuck t-shirts, have upped the fuzz and upped the fidelity on LOVISH. The spit and hiss of an old
Space Echo and a busted up tape machine runs throughout the guitar-centric album. The 11 song affair opens with the line All of your
heroes, theyre all assholes/but that dont mean you should piss on your dreams and then continues to both French kiss and shit talk the
present for the next forty minutes or so. The bands lyricist/multi-instrumentalist Michael Dawson jokes that he believes the government
started tapping his phone after writing a song about the Prime Ministers daughter so this time around he sticks to the much simpler topic of
love.
LOVISH is available November 6th via Nevado Records. Library Voices will tour internationally throughout the fall of 2015 and winter of
2016. They will book nicer accommodations in Amsterdam and try to avoid concussions altogether.
