Grow your courage to invent new solutions with Design Thinking

1. TRAINING PROGRAM SYNOPSIS


Design Thinking introduces a human-centered approach to solving challenging problems that is
accessible to all. It gives us the courage to tackle some of the wicked problems in our daily work.
The premise of Design Thinking is that: If we approached problems in the same way designers
approach design, we can find better solutions. This 2 day Training introduces the key concepts of
Design Thinking to non-Designers and empowers them with a simple 5 step Design Thinking
process that they can apply to any challenge they face in their working environment.

2. LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

a. Understand both corporate and personal barriers to challenging the status quo and to
discover ways to build up courage to participate in new initiatives.
b. Be human-centred in the understanding and solving of business problems.
c. Identify "Wicked Problems" within their business unit.
d. Be empowered with a new set of discovery and observation techniques to understand
problems .
e. Contribute to the imagining of new solutions in a cross-functional and collaborative
context
f. Apply a Design Thinking methodology to all manner of business challenges.

3. TRAINING COMPONENTS AND DURATION

Training pre-work:
2-3 weeks prior to training delivery participants will be send a self-assessment and
training pre-work communication. The participant is instructed to sit with their line
manager and discuss areas of development and learning outcomes for the training and to
explore wicked problems to solve for the business and provide focus for information
gathering for the homework exercise.

Training delivery - 2 days:
Approximately 9am-5pm with 60 minutes lunch break and 2 short tea breaks.

Post training follow-up:
This occurs 3 weeks after training delivery. The instructor will send a note to participants
to reinforce some key learning and to provide an opportunity for participants to reflect
and share feedback. Ideally participants can take back to their line managers their
contribution to a project of relevance to the organization for evaluation.

3. The Skills of Design Thinkers
-Human Empathy, Curiosity, Experimentation, Collaboration

4. The Courageous Mindset of Design Thinkers
- Questioning, Challenging the Status Quo, Creativity, Smart risk taking

5. Simple Design Thinking Process (5 steps)

11. Hands-on Design Thinking Exercise.
Participants will be clustered into groups: each group will work on a Wicked Problem within their
category. They will get to put the first 3 (and critical) steps in the Design Thinking process into
action. The Design Thinking exercise closes with a brief presentation from each group on their
chosen solution to their Wicked Problem.

5. TRAINER PROFILE
ANGELA KOCH
B.Com Honours (Marketing),
University of Natal
Diploma In Marketing Management

Angela Koch is founder and Chief Ideas facilitator of Invitro Innovation, an Asia based Ideas and
Innovations Consultancy. She brings a wealth of Creativity and Innovation practice following a
career as Strategic Planning Director with Global Brand and Communications companies In
Johannesburg, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Angela spends her days empowering teams and individuals to unlock their creative abilities so
that they can Awaken Purpose within their organisations.

Angela started her career in Higher Education, spending 5 years teaching Branding and
Marketing to undergraduates in her home town of Durban, South Africa. She then spent more
than 13 years as Strategic Lead for multi-national Communications Agencies TBWA, M&C Saatchi
and Leo Burnett working with some of the worlds most innovative consumer goods companies
such as Coca-Cola, Wrigley, Samsung and Proctor & Gamble. Most formative in Angelas Brand
and Innovation career was her time working with Proctor & Gamble in Greater China as an
Innovation Facilitator on their beauty care and household care divisions.

Angelas Invitro Innovation work has her involved in two important domains: Brand Innovation
and Product Innovation. Her Innovation clients come from the consumer goods sector, consumer
electronics, hospitality and services. She facilitates projects to discover the next growth engine
for a business and creates experiential learning experiences so that employees feel empowered to
participate in Innovation efforts.

Her work at Invitro Innovation takes her beyond her home base of Singapore to Hong Kong,
Taiwan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Angela is most proud of her appointment as
Lead Design Thinker for a leading Singapore Media Group and Innovation Facilitator for KPMGs
Asia-Pacific Innovation Champions.

Angela has a B Com (Hons) in Marketing from the University of Natal and a Diploma in Marketing
Management from the Institute of Marketing Management in South Africa.
Angela is keen to share her passion for Ideas and Innovation with young people in Asia. She is a
Business Mentor to Entrepreneurs in Incubation at the Singapore Management Universitys
Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Project Advisor to Conjunct Consulting, a
strategy consulting Social Enterprise based in Singapore.

Angela is passionate about the potential of ideas to make things better.
