School Year in England

School Terms

In England, the school year generally runs from early September to

mid July of the following year. Most schools operate a three-term
school year, each term divided in half by a week-long break known as
half term, and are structured as follows:
Autumn term: Early September to mid December (half term:
late October)
Spring Term: Early January to Easter (half term: mid February)
Summer Term: Easter to mid July (half term: late May/early
June)
The terms are separated by two holidays each consisting of
approximately two weeks: the Christmas holidays separating the
autumn term and spring term and the Easter holidays separating the
spring term and the summer term. The period between the end of one

school year and the start of the next is known as the summer
holidays consisting of six weeks.
School Holidays/Vacations

The main school holidays in England are:

Christmas - 2 weeks
Easter - 2 weeks
Summer (end of July and the whole of August) - 6 weeks
Students also have a one week holiday at the end of every odd
numbered term.
School Transport

Most student transport in England is performed by ordinary transit

buses. These buses can be used for other purposes when not in use
for school journeys. Most children use local scheduled public
transport bus services, and others choose to walk to school.
Due to concerns about children's safety, over the past decade,
starting in around 2000, the dedicated, yellow specifically-designed

school buses has been introduced to English students. As well as

safety benefits, it is reported to also be better for the environment.
School Uniform

Most schools in England require children to wear a school uniform.

For Boys: Long grey or black trousers (shorts may be worn in the
summer), white shirt, school tie (optional in most primary schools),
jumper or sweater with the school logo on, and black shoes.
For Girls: As above. Girls wear dresses in summer and gymslip in
winter.

and cultural development and prepare all pupils for the opportunities,
responsibilities and experiences of life.
