• ‘Dilip knows more about me and the pilots with whom I ew
during the Battle of Britain than we do’
GEORGE UNWIN, Battle of Britain ghter ace
Dilip Sarkar has been fascinated by the Battle of Britain since childhood
and began seriously researching the subject in the 1970s. He wrote
thousands of letters and travelled extensively over the UK interviewing
the fabled ‘Few’. Over the last 30 years he has interviewed more Battle
of Britain survivors than any other author. In this new book Dilip
Sarkar chronicles the Battle of Britain from start to nish, drawing
extensively from his interviews with pilots.
Dilip Sarkar is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and in 2003 was
made an MBE for services to aviation history. He has also written the
only biographical works formally endorsed by the families of Douglas
Bader and Johnnie Johnson.

Guy Gibson’s 617 Squadron was founded for one reason only – Operation
Chastise – the raid on the Ruhr dams. Using Barnes Wallis’ revolutionary
bouncing bomb, the hand-picked crews trained day and night over
British reservoirs, perfecting the techniques required to deliver the new
weapon to its targets. On the night of 16/17 May 1943, three waves of
modied Lancasters took o and headed for the industrial heartland of
Germany. The destruction of the dams would paralyse German industry
in the area and also destroy much infrastructure. Of the dams targeted,
three were attacked, being the Mohne, Sorpe and Eder dams. The raid
was a huge success with two of the three dams destroyed, with the
Mohne dam succumbing after ve Upkeep bouncing bombs had hit it. It
took three bombs to destroy the Eder dam but the Sorpe dam remained
almost intact. This is the story of the Dam Busters.

The future Henry VIII was born on 29 June 1491, the second son of Henry

man might have proved something of a handful to his elder brother,
Prince Arthur, the rstborn, had he survived to wear the crown. But
Henry’s life was changed forever when Arthur died in 1502 and the
course of English history took a very unexpected turn...

From the late 1940s to the fall of Communist Russia, Britain was at war.
To the general public much of it was imaginary but the Cold War was
real nonetheless. Flaring up in 1962, with the Cuban missile crisis and
in the 1980s with the standos between Reagan and Thatcher on one
side, with the Soviet leaders on the other.
There are many remains today from ‘secret’ nuclear bunkers to missile
sites, early-warning radar sites, huge research establishments and, of
course, spy sites such as GCHQ.
Bob Clarke tells the story of the myriad Cold War remains, illustrated
with 150 images, most never published before. He explains the need for
our defences and the consequences of nuclear war
Bob Clarke has worked around aviation since 1981. He is also a well

The story of Anne Boleyn’s early life, told in THE EARLY LOVES OF ANNE BOLEYN
detail for the first time JOSEPHINE WILKINSON
Anne Boleyn is perhaps the most engaging of Henry VIII’s Queens. For
her he would divorce his wife of twenty years, he would take on the
might of the Roman Church; he would even alienate his own people
in order to win her favour and, eventually, her hand. But before Henry
came into her life Anne Boleyn had already wandered down love’s
winding path. The rst was James Butler, with whom an arranged
marriage was designed to settle a family dispute. Anne then captured
the heart of Henry Percy, whose genuine love for her was reciprocated
and would have lead to Anne becoming countess of Northumberland.

of bringing Sudeley Castle back to life. When she and her late husband

Catherine Parr was enjoying her freedom after her rst two
arranged marriages when she caught the attention of the
elderly Henry VIII. The most reluctant of all Henry’s wives, she
oered to become his mistress rather than submit herself to
the dangers of becoming Henry’s queen. This only increased
Henry’s enthusiasm for the vibrant, intelligent young widow
and Catherine was forced to abandon her handsome lover,
Thomas Seymour, for the decrepit king. She quickly made her
role as queen a success, providing Henry VIII with a domestic
tranquillity that he had not known since the early days of his
rst marriage. For Henry, Catherine was a satisfactory choice
but he never stopped considering a new marriage, much
to Catherine’s terror. Traditionally portrayed as a matronly
and dutiful gure, Elizabeth Norton’s new biography shows
another side to Catherine. Her life was indeed one of duty
but, throughout, she attempted to escape her destiny and nd
happiness for herself.

• Takes the story of ‘romping royals’ to the present day and includes
Kate Middleton and Prince Harry’s ‘lovelies’.
Royal Sex shows how a certain number of key aristocratic families appear
to have cornered the market in providing our monarchs with mistresses
over successive centuries. The present Duchess of Cornwall is a prime
example, her great-grandmother, Alice Keppel was a mistress of Edward
VII, as the Duchess was of Prince Charles. The reason? to capture and
exploit royal power and royal patronage to place a royal mistress or
favourite at the centre of power.

Jane Seymour is often portrayed as meek and mild and as the most
successful, but one of the least signicant, of Henry VIII’s wives. The
real Jane was a very dierent character, demure and submissive yet
with a ruthless streak – as Anne Boleyn was being tried for treason,
Jane was choosing her wedding dress. From the lowliest origins of
any of Henry’s wives her rise shows an ambition every bit as great as
Anne’s.
Elizabeth Norton tells the thrilling life of a country girl from rural
Wiltshire who rose to the throne of England and became the ideal
Tudor woman.

It is now just over a century since Lusitania made her maiden crossing of
the North Atlantic. For seven and a half years, she crossed that rugged
ocean with punctuality and dependability. She fast became a living legend,
the ship of choice for many of the transatlantic travellers. Since her sinking
on 7 May 1915, however, her wondrous career and technological marvels
have largely been neglected. Instead, the focus has shifted to her political
importance, and on numerous conspiracy theories about her last voyage
and sinking.
This illustrated biography of the Lusitania discusses her entire story,
from her conception and birth on the Clyde to her career and, nally, to
her tragic demise o the coast of Ireland; it reveals her as she has never
been seen before.
Prepare to take a journey back in time ... step aboard the decks of one
of the world’s largest, nest, fastest and most beloved ocean liners, and
relive her history in all its splendour.
J. Kent Layton has been studying the history of Cunard’s Lusitania for the past
decade. He brings together, for the rst time, many fabulous images, from
numerous collections around the world to complement his outstanding
research on this fabulous vessel. He is an active member of the Titanic

dwarf even the largest ships of the time, being fully one-third larger than
any ship aoat. They would also be the most sumptuous vessels aoat,
carrying their millionaire passengers in unsurpassed luxury. The two ships,
Olympic and Titanic, were to be followed by a third sister, originally to be
called Gigantic, but renamed as Britannic after the sinking of Titanic in
April 1912.
Janette and Campbell McCutcheon tell the story of the White Star trio
using a fabulous collection of original postcards and photos of the three
sisters, only one of which was ever to make a return voyage from New
York.
With the loss of Titanic in 1912, work was suspended on Britannic, but
she was to sink on her sixth voyage as a hospital ship, during the First
World War. Despite sinking a U-boat by ramming it, Olympic survived
the war and was scrapped in Jarrow in 1935 after twenty-four years of
service for White Star.

The extensive use of colour is a new and exciting development in local interest publishing. The Through Time series provides
the local historian with the opportunity of producing ‘then and now’ comparative books in a much more meaningful
manner. Until now, most ‘then and now’ or ‘past and present’ books have been in black and white where often the new
photograph appears worse than the old. With the advent of digital photography it is now possible for the non-professional
to produce images of good quality with the added benet of immediate ‘on site’ review of the image captured.
With the benet of the four-colour printing process it is also possible to enhance the old black and white photograph in
a deep and rich sepia tone.
At Amberley we are doing our utmost to produce the best quality possible by careful choice of printer and the use
of good quality paper. The Through Time concept has captured the imagination of hundreds of authors and is now the
company’s agship local interest series with 150 new titles being published each year.
Each Through Time title contains 92 old images and 92 new images juxtaposed. The series is obviously appropriate for
villages, town and cities, but at Amberley we are also introducing sub-series of canals and railways.
If you wish to contribute a Through Time title to this growing list, please contact Sarah Flight at Amberley.
