The Wolfes Den

Hello there! Thank you for picking up a copy of our
town, FREEPORTs, only lil Newspaper. Please
thank those businesses who have advertised with us
for they are helping us establish a great reputation.
We have seen an increase lately of unlicensed socalled companies taking on heavy equipment and Land clearing projects. It has been
brought to my attention that a couple of these businesses are doing so from a residentially
zoned land. I have forwarded your E-mails and complaints to our local authorities, also
forwarded these findings to a state level.
Just because our area is expanding doesnt make it right. It is still against state law to
allow such people to do what they are doing. Thank you, for making this issue aware for us
to share. Its simple, follow a tractor or dozer, see where its being parked at each night.
That truck pulling a dozer cracks your windshield, who are you going to call? They dont
disclose a name to you. It comes out of your pocket. When you do hire, do you ask to see
certification, license to operate such equipment? Do you know if they even are
validated by the state with Workers Comp.? (It is the same as a CDL for trucking). A
backhoe is not just a tractor accessory. If you are doing work being paid by someone else?
Even the rental equipment co. are under a microscope. Do your part as a citizen and call-in
on suspicious activity, (it may appear legit), until you ask for paperwork for all workers on
any job site! People tell plenty of good tales before they are shutdown, (all from a
concerned caller). You may be surprised how many cons are around this town. No
business name on the vehicles towing heavy equipment is a noticeable start. There are
spotters throughout the county. STOP these thieves! Code enforcement is a start, then go up
till you see the verdict. See land clearing, yet no business name? Call ASAP. They are best
when caught in the action of, take photos, for the fines and court costs will be devastating
to these shysters. Just because you may know how to operate a dozer doesnt make you or
business legal and credible. Call the Sheriff & BBB if you have a solicitation for such
services. This is a serious criminal offense. Contact state officials immediately!
We had several calls recently about the country rapper Michel Knight. (Stage name)
but yet there is no stage shows. Hes an ex-con selling on the streets. Just illegal
peddling of CDs dont sound like much harm/only 10 bucks. However, there have been
assault charges, attempted kidnapping and more from these same individuals. Going from
town to town, bouncing wherever the Law will not notice or know the gangs history.
Yet, they have the opposite of no name of business on vehicles. They have it plastered
huge on the side of white Vans and buses to make it appear as if its a Star traveling to
another city or show. That is not the case. If you see them in Walton county especially, call
the police. They are wanted by the IRS for tax evasion and illegally selling of goods without permits all across this Nation. Yes, they go all around the states selling 500,000 CDs
copied a yr. at only $10ea, figure that income out. Only once they are caught are they
prosecuted. They have been involved in 16 states thus far, tied up in courts.
With about 10-15 guys at a gas station, they have bragged of making a couple thousand
dollars in an hr. Do you see the problem? If you have not read the Law in Walton county, it
is not permitted to sell road-side anything. There are multiple reasons for that. Safety,
travel and citizens protection from being took by a crook. Even Yard sales are now being
added for consideration of only permitting 2x a year. Exception of estate sale, death and or
moving. They need to regulate this for there have been several serious incidents of people
abusing the lack of a system in this county alone. A Yard sale can easily be disguised as a
full-time operation. If you have someone go around and buy others junk, then resell it?
Thats what business does, in zoning where businesses are allowed. Period. I hope to see
this in writing soon before it gets out of hand as a couple has found out by now. It has
caused many cities to ban against them, for it also junks-up the surrounding area as well.
So, I hope you realize the importance of keeping our city and county free from fraud, it is
up to us citizens to take notice of what is driving next to you. Living near you. Working
next to your home. Many convicted people are just shuffling to different areas in hopes not
to get caught. That is not Safe for you the consumer. Whether it be about Bad Food or
crappy construction. You will be the ones who suffer by wasting money you dont have.
Ask any contractor, the price to re-do what someone else has messed up? The sickening
feeling you get when you trusted someone and they leave you hanging. Ive had the unpleasure of experiencing just that, with my car. There isnt anyone near here who will back
up their work. Id love to name some names, but I do believe the people who need to know,
already know. So many businesses have come and gone within a year, why do you think
that is? When shady people take your money, its only you who looks out for you. That is
why you need to make that call. When you make the call they will investigate it thoroughly
as it needs to be. No signs visible where clearing? Call today! A list is forming of locations.
There are several handymen in this area with a fantastic reputation of doing a good job
and they make very little money over the cost of the materials for the job, to be done right.
Simple home repairs when done wrong can easily add up to thousands. Feel free to call in
to this Newspaper for references. When an honest person offers help, let them. You may be
helping a Man fend for his family of food and utilities. Helping people in need is good.

Antonin Scalia: An Unlikely Ally in the

Fight Against Bad Sentencing Policy
The death of Justice Antonin Scalia sent shockwaves
through the conservative movement, and everyone, regardless of their philosophic persuasion, is trying to figure out
what the loss of this conservative icon means for the future
of the Supreme Court and the Constitution. It is likely,
however, that the answer will not come until November.
Scalia, of course, left his mark on the Court with his commitment to textualism and originalist interpretation of the
Constitution, though there were occasional departures
from his beliefs, such as his concurrence in Raich, which
had the effect of expanding the Commerce Clause. His
opinions and dissents were often filled with fiery originalist arguments and humorous prose. Some of his dissents in
the most recent term were so memorable that the posthardcore band Coheed and Cambria put them into song.
The conservative jurist was, perhaps counterintuitively, an
ally when it came to certain aspects of federal sentencing
policy. In a 2008 interview with the Associated Press,
Scalia explained his views by pointing to his interpretation
of the nation's founding document. "I ought to be the darling of the criminal defense bar because I have defended
criminal defendants rights because theyre there in the
original Constitution to a greater degree than most
judges have," he said.
A great example is Scalia's 2010 dissent in cases involving
the Armed Career Criminal Act (ACCA), a 1984 law
aimed a recidivist violent offenders. The Court had received writs of certiorari to review the cases but declined
to hear them. Each of the cases involved the vague language of the "residual clause" of ACCA, which partly defines a violent felony as an activity that "otherwise involves conduct that presents a serious potential risk of
physical injury to another." ACCA allows prosecutors to
seek sentencing enhancements for those within its reach.
Scalia did not hold back his contempt for ACCA in his
dissent, arguing that the vague wording on of the residual
clause failed to provide those subject to its sentencing enhancements. "Since our ACCA cases are incomprehensible
to judges, the statute obviously does not give person[s] of
ordinary intelligence fair notice of its reach," he wrote. "I
would grant certiorari, declare ACCAs residual provision
to be unconstitutionally vague, and ring down the curtain
on the ACCA farce playing in federal courts throughout
the Nation."

Top technology officer at

hacked federal agency resigns
The top technology official at a federal agency hit with
hacks that compromised the personal files of 21 million
Americans has resigned days before a congressional
oversight committee hearing on the breach.
Donna Seymour, the chief information officer for the Office
of Personnel Management, announced her "retirement" in an
email to colleagues Monday, writing that "leaving OPM at
this time was a very tough decision, but I feel it is in the
agency's best interest that my present does not distract from
the great work this team does every single day."
The U.S. believes the hack, which impacted sensitive
background paperwork used for security clearances, was a
Chinese espionage operation. The federal government last
month established a new agency to handle the background
check process and the records it creates, shifting data
security responsibilities to the Defense Department.
Seymour, who came to OPM in late 2013, was scheduled to
testify on the breach before the House Oversight and
Government Reform Committee on Wednesday. Rep. Jason
Chaffetz, R-Utah, who chairs the committee, has called for
her resignation multiple times, called her retirement "good
news and an important turning point" for the federal agency.
"While I am disappointed Ms. Seymour will no longer
appear before our Committee this week to answer to the
American people, her retirement is necessary and long overdue." "On her watch, whether through negligence or
incompetence, millions of Americans lost their privacy and
personal data."
He said the national security implications of the breach are
long lasting and that the agency needs a new chief
technology officer to restore confidence. "Unfortunately,
efforts by Republicans to blame her for the cyberattack on
OPM are both unfair and inaccurate, and they set a terrible
precedent that will discourage qualified experts from taking
on the challenges our nation faces in the future," No timeline
was announced for Seymour's replacement. OPM spokesman
Michael Amato said the agency is "working on that front, but
in the meantime, we remain confident in the team we have in
place and their ability to continue our efforts to improve our
IT capabilities and security by working collaboratively across
OPM and with our partners throughout government."

Among the many

problems with
manned missions to
Mars is the amount
of time it takes for
any ship to get to
the red planet.
Current estimates
are that it would take a manned spacecraft
approximately six months to travel from Earth to
Mars, although NASA is working on an experimental
project that it thinks could enable travel to Mars in a
matter of days. Per ScienceAlert, NASA recently
posted a video where scientist Philip Lubin talked
about the possibility of building a laser propulsion
system capable of sending a 100-kilogram
spacecraft to Mars in just three days and of getting a
manned spacecraft there in one month.
Basically, this proposed system would rely on
electromagnetic acceleration instead of chemical
acceleration thats used right now when a rocket
propels itself by burning fuel. Having to rely on a
giant fuel supply needlessly weighs down the spacecraft and makes travelling long distances in space
very inefficient from an energy standpoint.
Electromagnetic acceleration, meanwhile, doesnt
have any such burdens. Electromagnetic
acceleration is only limited by the speed of light
while chemical systems are limited to the energy of
chemical processes.
Creating such a propulsion system would entail
using a very intense light source to accelerate
matter, Lubin explains. While this may sound
simple, designing such a system would nonetheless
be hugely challenging. As ScienceAlert explains,
building this system could require a lot of
complicated and expensive equipment such as the
ring of superconducting magnets that make up the
Large Hadron Collider, which hasnt been easy to
scale up to the size required for space travel.
Yesterday is gone and done, thats
why its called the past
Today is a gift, that why its called
the present.
Tomorrow awaits for you to do something special for someone. Just care.

Big part of the problem is getting people to take medications, stick with them,
experts say
Nearly half of Americans with high blood pressure are not properly controlling
their condition, increasing their risk of heart attack, stroke and heart disease, a
new government report shows. About 47 percent of people with high blood pressure have not brought their numbers to a normal range, through either lifestyle
changes or medications, according to data published Feb.12 from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That's actually a huge improvement: Back in 1999, more than 68 percent did not
have their blood pressure under control, the report found.
But it's far short of the federal Healthy People 2020 goal, which calls for fewer
than 40 percent of people with high blood pressure to have it uncontrolled by
that date, according to the CDC researchers.
Experts agreed that the problem is still significant. "I don't think we have enough
positive information to be cheering," said Dr. Patrick O'Gara, executive medical
director of the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at Brigham and
Women's Hospital in Boston. "Although the trend is positive, the magnitude of
the problem is self-evident. We have a lot of work to do."
High blood pressure is defined as 140 or higher systolic pressure (the top
number) and 90 or higher diastolic (the bottom number). Systolic is the pressure
of blood in the vessels when the heart beats, and diastolic is the pressure
between beats.
The overall rate of high blood pressure in the United States has remained
constant, hovering between 28 percent and 29 percent, the new report found.
Two in three people over the age of 60 have high blood pressure, and one in
three people between the ages of 40 and 59 have the condition.
What improvements there have been in controlling high blood pressure have not
benefitted all groups in the United States. Whites are most likely to have their
blood pressure under control, close to 56 percent, the CDC report showed.
Blacks (48 percent under control), Asians (43 percent) and Hispanics (47
percent) are all more likely to be living with uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Statement of Senator Don

Gaetz Decision of Judiciary
Chair to Kill SB 300
In a letter to
constituents,
State Senator
Don Gaetz said
"Senator Miguel
Diaz de la Portilla has exercised his
authority as Chairman of the Judiciary
Committee to kill SB 300, which
would have allowed Florida citizens to
exercise their Second Amendment
rights to openly keep and bear
arms. SB 300 would have allowed
only those persons lawfully able to
carry hand guns to do so without
concealment, without brandishing
them, without violating private
property rights and without allowing
weapons in any place where they are
now prohibited. According to the US
Department of Justice, open carry
states have less violent crime and less
gun-related crime than states which
require concealed carry.
Gaetz said, "One thing is sure: those
of us who support and defend the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms
will be back, always ready to make
our case and earn our votes. We will
never fear the debate."

Happenings in DeFuniak Springs

DeFUNIAK SPRINGS -CHOOSES
AMTRAK
If numbers are
any indicator,
train service to
Defuniak
Springs and
communities
along the Gulf
Coast enjoy
plenty of
support. Amtrak and the Southern Rail
Commission conducted a tour from New Orleans
to Jacksonville last week.
Southern Rail Commission Dan Dealy
said public support is a key element on
deciding whether or not to re-establish service
and where the designated stops will be.
Mayor Campbell said DeFuniak Springs has a lot
to offer. "We already have a depot that can be
easily updated and brand new four lane highway
that will take visitors quickly to the beautiful
beaches of South Walton in only 20 minutes."
As the train rolled into DeFuniak Springs,
hundreds of residents lined both sides of the track
with signs, flags and banners welcoming
Amtrak. The scene was reminiscent of a bygone
era when train service was an everyday part of
American life. Officials will now take comments
and presentations from local officials on just
exactly what their town or community has to offer
and make their case.
A decision is expected by fall 2016.

Republicans vow no vote, hearing

on Obama Supreme Court pick
Though some GOP lawmakers appeared to waver
in recent days in their opposition to considering a
nominee, party leaders largely united Tuesday.
First, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell
said his party will not permit a vote. Then, every
GOP member of the Senate Judiciary Committee
penned a letter pledging not to even hold a hearing until the next president is sworn into office.
"[W]e wish to inform you of our intention to exercise our constitutional authority to withhold
consent on any nominee to the Supreme Court
submitted by this President to fill Justice Scalias
vacancy, they wrote in the letter to McConnell.
Because our decision is based on constitutional
principle and born of a necessity to protect the
will of the American people, this Committee will
not hold hearings on any Supreme Court nominee
until after our next President is sworn in on January 20, 2017.

Tobacco Free Florida is raising

awareness during Through with Chew

The Florida Department of Healths Tobacco Free

Florida Program is raising awareness about the
dangers of smokeless tobacco like chew and dip
during Through With Chew Week. This national
public awareness campaign was created to reduce
the use of smokeless tobacco among young people,
and Tobacco Free Florida aims to help combat this
deadly addiction. Through With Chew Week takes
place Feb. 22nd till March 1, with the Great
American Spit Out Feb. 26
Although youth cigarette smoking rates in Florida
are at an all-time low, 4.9 percent of Florida high
school students reported current use of smokeless
tobacco products in 2015, the same rate it was in
2005, according to the Florida Youth Tobacco
Survey.
Smokeless tobacco products contain harmful
chemicals that are known to cause cancer, said
State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr.
John Armstrong. "Youth who use smokeless
products are more likely to experiment with other
types of tobacco. Research is clear that adolescent
boys who use smokeless tobacco have a higher risk
of becoming cigarette smokers.
At least 28 cancer-causing chemicals have been
identified in smokeless tobacco. Smokeless
tobacco users have an 80 percent higher risk of oral
cancer and a 60 percent higher risk of esophageal
cancer and pancreatic cancer compared to
non-users. Apart from cancer, smokeless tobacco
users can develop other oral health issues, such as
mouth sores, gum recession, tooth decay and
permanent discoloration of teeth. The use of some
types of smokeless tobacco products is also
associated with an increased risk of heart disease
and fatal stroke.
Currently, there is no scientific or medical evidence
that proves smokeless tobacco use is an effective
method to help people quit smoking. Floridians who
want to quit any form of tobacco have access to the
states free and proven-effective resources.

Core Republicans throw support to

Rubio as best bet to derail Trump
Marco Rubio picked up a flurry of endorsements Monday from key
Republicans in his bid for the GOP presidential nomination, as the
GOP establishment appeared to coalesce behind the Florida senator
as its best hope to head off Donald Trump. The endorsements, including support from former Senate Majority Leader and one-time
presidential candidate Bob Dole, Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and former Minnesota Gov. Tim
Pawlenty, came after Jeb Bush exited the race and on the heels of a
series of blunders by the campaign of Rubio rival Ted Cruz. While
it is not clear that the support of old guard Republicans will be
enough to stop Trump in an election campaign dominated by insurgent candidates, party members expressed doubt that anger at
Washington will be enough to defeat presumptive nominee Hillary
Clinton. Your vote will make a difference.

U Shoot DARTS?
Coping Skills
By Rian Lyday

Its not stress that kills us,

it is our reaction to it.
-Hans Selye
We all stressall of us, whether we are
teenagers or adults well into our golden
years. The difference between us is how we
deal with the stress handed to us. I know that
when I began to understand how much I
stressed and how much it affected my life, I
was already well into my 30s. Imagine being
a child with all the pressures they face today?
How do we teach our children to handle
stress the right way and cope with the many
obstacles that life throws our way?
1. Positive self-talk. Kids often repeat
negative thoughts in their heads like, No
one likes me; Im fat and ugly; Im going to
fail this test because Im stupid. Positive
Self-talk is the ability to replace them with
positives like, I can handle it. I passed
before, I can pass again. I have some good
friends who care about me.
2. Break it down. If your child is stressed
and overwhelmed by a big project, help them
break it down into small steps. Similarly,
have your child write their name at the top
of a big assignment, or have them come up
with a title. These baby steps can help your
child get over his or her fear of starting a
huge task.
3. Anxious, worrier kids. Our son is a
bit of a perfectionist and really gets down on
himself when he doesnt do well. Its what
you do next that counts. Admitting when
youve made a mistake and apologizing in
front of your child is huge, too. And, instead
of praising our child for the end result, weve
started to focus on how hard he worked, and
how creatively he solved the problem.
4. Lighten the load. If your child is overwhelmed with school and extra-curriculars,
sit down with them and say, You seem a
little stressed lately. How can I be helpful?
Lets talk about something we can change or
cut out. Are you taking care of others but
not yourself? Do you volunteer too much, or
get sucked in by work 24/7? Try to create
some boundaries and space in your life, too,
if you can. (I know easier said than done!
This is one Im working on myself!)
5. Help your child find a way to calm: Help
your child find something specific to them
that has the power to calm them down,
whether its listening to music, going
skateboarding, reading, walking the dog,
drawing, talking to a trusted friend, or
shooting some hoops. (Preferably, something
thats screen-free is best, since electronics
tend to jazz kids up, but every kid is different
and you know your child best.) This is
such an important life skill to master.
