We have many things to discuss in this month's
newsletter!
Eliminating 5% Transaction Fee
As many of you may already know, we have
eliminated our 5% fee on barter transactions. By
eliminating this fee we are happy to be providing the
fixed cost of membership fees only for our members
and hope that it will help simplify our fees.
Membership Fees
As of July 6 we have changed our membership fees
slightly. These fees are for new members moving
forward. We will continue to honor the contracts with
our current members. Our new fee structure is:
3 month contract: $30 a month for $90 total
6 month contract: $25 a month for $150 total
12 month contract: $20 a month for $240 total
As we have added services and value to a GBA
membership we felt that it was appropriate at this
time to have our membership fees reflect that. We
are continuing to add benefits for our members to
help increase exposure and hopefully help to
improve everyone's bottom line.
Online Podcast Program
One of the new services we're adding for our
members is the 15-minute online podcast. Rolling
out in August, each member will have the
opportunity to record a podcast with GBA to
introduce and describe their products or services.
These podcasts will be linked from our members
page on the website as well as given to members to
use at their own discretion.

Handling Cash/Barter Sales in
QuickBooks

The question was posed to me, “How do I handle sales
where I have made an agreement to receive half in
barter and the other half as a cash transaction?” My
first advice is to hire a professional bookkeeper to
handle all your needs. But all kidding aside the easiest
way to handle this is shown through the following
example.
Let us say that you invoice a customer for $200.00 and
there is no sales tax involved. Create the invoice as
you normally would in QuickBooks. Upon receiving
payment receive the amount of $200.00 like you
normally would.
When it comes time to make the deposit into your
normal checking account check off all deposits you are
about to receive as if all the money was going to the
bank. Down at the bottom of the deposit screen there
is an area to have cash back go to a separate account.
Have your barter account be that account. Your barter
account should be set up as a bank account anyway
because this is an account with money in it to be used
by your business.
Income received on barter is taxable income and you
will receive a 1099 at the end of the year for this.
Alsoif you are paying for something through barter you
do not issue a 1099 to any vendor you paid in barter
money. However, let us say you paid $1,200.00 in
Barter and $600.00 in cash to a vendor then you only
issue a 1099 for the $600.00 you paid in cash. GBA
will issue the 1099 for the $1,200.00.
