made her name in Phuket Province as the

Paradise Group was established back in 2002
and nowadays is a major mover and shaker on
the island in tasteful and quality project design,
project consultancy, project development and
project management. The Paradise Groups
footprints are not hard to find on the island

a start, shes a firm believer in the

Buddhist belief that many leaders

encouraged to adhere to for the benefit
of all. In short, these ten-fold beliefs
consist of Dna (charity), Sla (morality),
Pariccga (altruism), jjava (honesty),
Maddava (gentleness),Tapa (self control),
Akkodha (non-anger), Avihimsa (nonviolence), Khanti (forbearance) and
Avirodhana (uprightness). Shes a firm
believer in leading by example and also
of sharing ones blessings with others.
She states, When Im successful I share it
with others in the community.
Indeed, shes an active philanthropist and
donates to Kamala Community Welfare
Fund every year. This fund was set up
to help disadvantaged people in Kamala
and supports sick babies, children, and
elderly people as well as providing
support for critical hospitalised patients.
Apple and her team are also active in the
Kamala Beach Cleaning Club, helping
with weekly Friday afternoon beach

cleanups organized by local teens.
Not only that but she also oversees
the Andaras donating leftover greens
and fruits for the well being of Kamala
Sub-district Administration in the
making of Effective Microorganisms
or EM. Every summer, Apple supports
teachers fees, lunches and stationary
for children who join the Masjid
Phadungsas Baan Kamala summer
camp. This activity helps parents
to place their children in a positive
environment while the schools are

closed for holidays something every
hard-working and responsible parent
appreciates very much. Shes also
active in Phuket Natural Resources
and Environmental Protection
Network as well as providing the
budget for placing trash filters at the
mouths of five Kamala canals in order
to remove debris and trash before it

believes in the old adage: You

yours. Her personal motto as
she goes through life comes from
American writer Stephen Chbosky:

this, she incredibly enough also
finds time to be on the Kamala
Police Station monitoring committee,
helping in motorcycle helmet wearing
awareness, maintaining the property
and donating office equipment,
and even providing lunch for police
officers in Andaras Silk restaurant.

I like to exercise. For me jogging or boxing is the ideal
solution considering how little time I have to work this
into my schedule.

Sunscreen lotion is a total must when living in Thailand.
Were close to the equator here and its difficult to avoid
the sun. As PR people we have to meet a lot of people and
have to look our best so personally this makes me especially
aware of skin care.
4 Bold Lips
Bold lips enhance my character. Youll always see me
with bold lips. I think they suit me the most and make me
stand out.
5 Cant live without

My Smart Phone. I use it daily and its almost become a
part of me. If I forget it at home this means that I simply
cannot contact others and in my job this is impossible as
my phone is indispensable.

A simple, modern style that reects my personality, suitable

for any occasion.

Her Costume
Handmade earrings. This pair of earrings I got from dear

friends who made them especially for me. They shine out
and when I go to a party or any impromptu event, they can
help make me outstanding.
Most of the time trousers maybe paired with a clutch bag

and a pair of matching earrings.
3 Lamy Pen
This is my favourite pen. It has a ashy colour and always
grabs peoples attention when I take it out. Impressive!
6 Her Favourite Photo

It was taken when I took part in the grand opening event
of EMQuartier, a new shopping place on Sukhumvit Road
in Bangkok. I was Public Relations Division Manager at The
Mall Group at the time, and my job was to make the event
talked about, known and remembered. It was challenging.

Patrizia started to cook when very young and

took up being a chef as a career when she
was about 21 years old, and now her culinary
journey leads her to La Gritta one of the
most beautiful Italian restaurants in Phuket.

Phuketindex visited her at La Gritta to
learn about her passions and her food.
Chef Patrizia comes from Rome. She was originally
born in Sardinia but lived almost all of her life in
Rome for her profession before she moved to
Phuket. Like many chefs, she feels cooking is her
chosen profession since an early age. I started
to cook when I was very young, around ten years
old. My mother played an important role as
she was always very curious and interested in
international food. So its not difficult for me to
cook, says Chef Patrizia.

when people are
happy with my
creations.
She started to cook for 30-40 people when she was

only a teenager then Patrizia went to university
to study languages (Chef Patrizia speaks English
and French and little bit of Arabic) but the culinary
arts always held her interest.
I love to play with the colours of food and
combine as many different ingredients as
possible. Because life is very rich so I want my
dishes to be rich like life.
Her mother was her great inspiration and mentor.
Absorbing her mentors cooking style resulted in
interesting combinations.
Her cooking career officially began when she
was about 21 years old in a hotel in Northern
Italy. Chef Patrizia later returned to Rome after
this experience. There she helped her uncle in a
catering service before she became the manager
of a small restaurant in the center of Rome. Small
but very popular, as she says. She started her own
catering service herself after a while, supplying
for weddings, meetings and events. The last big
meeting before I came here was for 700 people,
she says.

recently had the opportunity to join
up with the newly appointed General
Manager of the beautiful Renaissance
Phuket Resort & Spa. Joining the team
at Renaissance on the 9th of September,
2015, GM Sander Looijen revealed his
background and enthusiasms with us.
Sander is originally from Nijmegen,
Holland and moved to the beautiful city
of Maastricht in the south of Holland
when he was about 18-19 years old
where he started in hotel management
school. During his studies he also
worked for dierent restaurants in the
city. He did his traineeship in Shanghai,
China and who could have known that
that time would have made him fall in
love with Asia and would dream to be
back? He finished his studies and has
been in the hospitality industry around
Asia for 12 years now.
About his career path

I started my career in Shanghai with
Marriott about 12 years ago. I worked
there as a trainee and became

Restaurant Manager a year later. After

sometime there, I moved to Hong Kong to
work for another Marriott for two years in
a few dierent capacities but mostly food &
beverage. Then I moved back to open a new
hotel, the Renaissance Zhongshan Park in
the middle of Shanghai where I worked in
Restaurant and Events Management as well.
After that I moved to Renaissance Beijing
Capital as Food & Beverage director. A year
and a half later, I was asked by the regional
office in Hong Kong to take over the role of
Director of Restaurants and Bars for Asia.
I was there for about four years and now I
started my new role as a General Manager
in this beautiful hotel.
Why have you been

appointed to be the new GM
of Renaissance Phuket?
With a smile on his face, GM Sander says
that maybe we should ask his boss before
continuing, I think the hotel is quite modern,
young, and has an energetic vibe and I think
my personality fits with that. Its also my first
appointment as a General Manager so I guess
the energy and the whole spirit that I bring
to the hotel will hopefully bring it up to the
next level.

What ae the biggest

obstacles you come up
against within your
job and how do you
ovecome them?
How do you think the

job hee in Phuket
compaes to your
pevious jobs?
I think its very dierent from other
jobs. First, as a General Manager
running a hotel the experience is
something new to me. Second, it is a
resort location. In the past I used to
travel a lot to Thailand and one of my
missions was to come here because I
love the country and nally here I am.
Its a dierent culture, a dierent kind
of people, but its really wonderful to
be here, to be part of this beautiful
resort.
Whats going to be your

main task hee?
The number one thing that I will be
focusing on as a General Manager I
think is the team. People that work for
the hotel are by far most important
asset of the hotel. We have to make
sure we take care of them. Our
company philosophy is if we take care
of our stewardship, they will take care
of our guests and the guests will come
back and I truly believe in that. Second,
of course is that I will take care of our
guests. I think a General Manager
should be around in the hotel to meet
as many guests as possible and to get
their feedback. In general guests like to
express their feelings and like to share
the feedback. Its very important.

Is thee any aspect o the

job you like moe than
anything else and why?
Its the same as I just mentioned,
being surrounded by people, talking
to people, getting the feedback from
people has always been my passion.
I believe that creating a team and
developing people into new roles, into
higher roles gives me great fulllment.
Thats one thing that I particularly like
about working in a hotel. Because there
are so many people and to work with
those amazing people is the thing that
I enjoy the most.
One of the biggest obstacles in

general, not only for this hotel but
also for Phuket, is the ever-changing
market. There are so many dierent
nationalities that come to the resort
and the economy and environment
of those countries have direct impacts
on our hotel. So to stay updated with
all the situations in those countries
of course is very important and even
more important is to react to those
changes. When we see changes within
the market, we need to make sure that
our offerings will attract the other
segments of the market. I think thats
one of the most important things that
I need to focus on.
Do you have a personal

goal now you ae hee
at Renaissance Phuket?
My goal is always to be number one
in terms of anything that I can be
number one in. Im quite a competitive
person. I would like to be number one
but its not going to happen over a few
weeks or a few months but with a longterm strategy and a building up and
motivating the team in the right ways. I
truly believe that we can achieve that.
What do you like to do

in your spae time, i
you have any?
When Im free I like to spend time
with my family which is by far the most
important thing in my life. I have two
young boys so you can imagine that Im
busy at work and maybe even busier
when I get home! But its lots of fun.
Besides that, I like sports, especially
water sports. Im extremely pleased to
be in Phuket. I love swimming so I hope
to do a lot of that. I would also like to
start Thai boxing which I have done
a few times in the past and I enjoyed
that a lot. Of course, here is the perfect
place to practice Thai boxing.
