These are the characteristics of the K to 12 Health Curriculum:
.1. Culture- responsive---uses the cultural knowledge, prior
experiences and performance styles of the diverse student body to make learning more appropriate and effective. It uses how to make ideas and knowledge meaningful to multicultural learners and how to use students culture and interests as tools to teach them.
2. Epidemiological--- relates to the incidence, prevalence and
distribution of diseases in populations including detection of the sources and cases of epidemics. From the word epidemiology it is the study of how diseases spread and can be controlled. This relates to the information that is used to plan and evaluate strategies to prevent illness and as a guide to the management to someone with whom disease has already developed. 3. Health and Life- skills based--- applies life skills to specific health choices and behaviors. Its equipping learners with the knowledge, positive attitudes and skills they need to protect their health and can make a significant contribution to the health of young people. 4. Holistic--- analyzes the interrelationship among the factors that influence the health status, the areas of health and the dimensions of health (physical, mental, social, emotional, moral and spiritual) It is multi- dimensional 5. Learner- centeredfocuses on the students needs, abilities, interests and learning styles with the teacher as a facilitator of learning. It is well understood, right?
6. Preventive----- characterizes something that helps people take
positive health actions in order to prevent diseases and to achieve optimum health.
Preventive control which consists in appropriate monitoring of the
development of any diseases, early detection and reducing occurrence to achieve health and wellness. 7. Rights- based--- advances the understanding and recognition of human rights, as laid down in the Universal declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments. It emphasizes on our RIGHTS as HUMAN in accordance to the Universal declaration of Human Rights. 8. Standards and Outcomes- based--- requires students to demonstrate that they have learned the academic standards set on specific content and competencies. It demonstrates understanding or mastery of knowledge and skills competencies that are deemed to be essential. 9. Values- based--- promotes an educational philosophy based on valuing of self-others and the environment thru the consideration of ethical values as the bases of good practice. It should be values- based that impart social, moral, integrity, character and spirituality to become a better citizen in the country.
