PHOTOSHOP QUESTION

1. What is Adobe Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is an image editing software.
Images , logos can be created using Photoshop.
Picture / image editing is done with Photoshop.
Photoshop allows to modify images using painting tools.
Adjustments to the images can be done like contrast and color balancing.
It also supports text graphics, water marks, transparent images.
2. Explain the Photoshop tools and their uses.
Or Explain Photoshop tools palette with a description of each tools function and
shortcuts.
Ans: Rectangular Marquee Tool (M)
Use this tool to make selections on your image, in a rectangular shape. This changes the
area of your image that is affected by other tools or actions to be within the defined
shape. Holding the [Shift] key while dragging your selection, restricts the shape to a
perfect square. Holding the [Alt] key while dragging sets the center of the rectangle to
where your cursor started.
Move Tool (V)
Use this tool to, well, move things. Usually you use it to move a Layer around after it has
been placed. Hold the [Shift] key to limit the movements to vertical/horizontal.
Polygon Lasso Tool (L)
Ok, this should be the Lasso Tool, but I use the Polygon Lasso a lot more often. Use this
to draw selections in whatever shape you would like. To close the selection, either click
on the beginning point (youll see the cursor change when youre on it), or just doubleclick. When holding the [Ctrl] key, youll see the cursor change, and the next time you
click, it will close your selection.
Magic Wand Tool (W)
Use this to select a color range. It will select the block of color, or transparency, based on
wherever you click. In the Options Bar at the top, you can change the Tolerance to make
your selections more/less precise.
Crop Tool (C)
The Crop Tool works similarly to the Rectangular Marquee tool (see above if you have no
short-term memory). The difference is when you press the [Enter/Return] key, it crops
your image to the size of the box. Any information that was on the outside of the box is
now gone. Not permanently, you can still undo.
Slice Tool (K)
This is used mostly for building websites, or splitting up one image into smaller ones
when saving out. Its kind of an advanced tool.

Healing Brush Tool (J)

This is a really useful tool. Mildly advanced. You can use this tool to repair scratches and specs and
stuff like that on images. It works like the Brush tool (see below). You choose your cursor size, then
holding the [Alt] key, you select a nice/clean area of your image. Let go of the [Alt] key and paint over

the bad area. It basically copies the info from the first area to the second, in the form of the Brush tool.
Only, at the end, it averages the information, so it blends.
Brush Tool (B)
This is one of the first tools ever. Its what Photoshop is based off of. Well, not really, but its
pretty basic. It paints one your image, in whatever color you have selected, and whatever size
you have selected. In this section some other tools Pencil Tool (B), Color replacement tool
and mixer brush tool available in Photoshop CS 5.Pencil Tool use to draws aliased (jagged)
lines which can be set to different widths. The Auto Erase option for the Pencil tool lets you
paint the background color over areas containing the foreground color. It is very useful in
making touch-ups with the single-pixel brush.
Clone Stamp Tool (S)
This is very similar to the Healing Brush Tool (see above). You use it the exact same way, except this
tool doesnt blend at the end. Its a direct copy of the information from the first selected area to the
second.

History Brush Tool (H)

This tool works just like the Brush Tool (see above) except the information that it paints with is from
the original state of your image. If you go Window>History, you can see the History Palette. The
History Brush tool paints with the information from whatever History state is selected.
Eraser Tool (E)
This is the anti-Brush tool.
Normal Eraser: Replaces the area erased on the active layer with the current
background color.
Background Eraser: Erases the image background on the active layer.
Magic Eraser: Erases (changes to transparent) the range of colors defined by the
number set in the Tolerance window at the top of the Photoshop screen. Tolerance
sets the range of colors removed. Selecting Contiguous on the options bar will
limit the selection to colors touching the pixel selected by the eraser, rather than
selecting across the whole image.

Paint Bucket Tool(G) with Gradient Tool (G):

Paint Bucket Tool use to fill an area of continuous color by clicking on it. In other
words, it fills one selected color with another. Like the magic wand, you set the Tolerance
value and Anti-aliased is turned on. Another option you might consider is the Fill
command under the Edit Menu.

We can use Gradient Tool to make a gradiation of colors. Gradiation doesnt appear to be a word, but
it makes sense anyway. It creates a blending of your foreground color and background color when you
click and drag it. Like a gradient.
Sharpen Tools: On Tool Bar with Blur(R) and Smudge Tools
These two tools will sharpen or blur edges within a specified tolerance. The blur tool
looks like a tear drop. Press the R key to switch between the blur and sharpen tools.
Smudge Tools used to drag colors from one area into another. It can be used to cover

defects or create special effects along an edge. Setting the pressure changes the length
of the smudge line that can be created. Brush sized also can be adjusted.

Dodge Tool (O)

This tool isnt as crappy as the car brand. Its actually used to lighten whatever area you use it on. As
long as it is not absolute black. Absolute black wont lighten.
Pen Tool (P)
Its for creating paths, in which you would use the Path Selection Tool to select the path. Paths can be
used in a few different ways, mostly to create clipping paths, or to create selections. You use the tool
by clicking to add a point. If you click and drag, it will change the shape of your path, allowing you to
bend and shape the path for accurate selections and such.

Horizontal Type Tool (T)

It makes type. Or text. Or whatever you want to call it. You can click a single point, and start typing
right away. Or you can click and drag to make a bounding box of where your text/type goes. Theres a
lot of options for the Type Tool. Just play around, its fairly straight-forward.
Path Selection Tool (A)
You use this tool when working with paths. Since this is all about the basics, I wont go into details.
Its related to the Pen Tool though.

Red Eye Tool:

Removes red eye from the eyes in a photograph. Select the tool and then click on the offending eye.

Saturating Colors in an Image: See Image Adjustments or Toning Tools.

Shape Tools:
Creates vector graphic shapes.
.

Rectangle Tool (U)

By default it draws a Shape Layer in the form of a rectangle. It fills the rectangle with whatever
foreground color you have selected. Its pretty complicated, dont hurt yourself with this one.
Notes Tool (N)
Like post-it notes, but digital. You can use this tool to add small little note boxes to your image. These
are useful if youre very forgetful or if youre sharing your Photoshop file with someone else. Im
pretty sure it only works with .PSD files.
Eyedropper Tool (I)
This tool works by changing your foreground color to whatever color you click on. Holding the [Alt]
key will change your background color.
Hand Tool (T)
You can really make short work of your job with the Hand Tool. Its for moving your entire image
within a window. So if youre zoomed in and your image area is larger than the window, you can use

the Hand Tool to navigate around your image. Just click and drag. You can get to this tool at any time
when using any other tool by pressing and holding the [Spacebar].
Zoom Tool (Z)
Pretty obvious what this tool does. It allows you to zoom into your image. Dont be dumb, it doesnt
actually change the size of your image. Hold the [Alt] key to zoom out. Holding the [Shift] key will
zoom all of the windows you have open at the same time. Double-click on the Zoom Tool in the
palette to go back to 100% view.
Foreground Color
These are your color boxes. Foreground (in the front) and Background (in the back). Click on either
one to bring up the color select dialog box.

What are roles of Photoshop tools namely Clone Stamp and Eyedropper?
Ans:
How to Use the Photoshop Marquee Tool
Ans: To use the marquee tool, select it in the Photoshop toolbar. It is the second tool
down, below the move tool. To access the four options of the marquee, hold the left
mouse key down on the tool, and select one of the additional options from the pop-up
menu.
Once you have selected the marquee tool of your choice, you can select an area of the
image to work with. Position the mouse where you want to begin the selection and click
the left mouse button, holding it down while you drag the selection to the desired size,
and then release the mouse button. For the single row and single column marquees,
click and drag the marquee to select the one-pixel line of your choice.
With the rectangular and elliptical marquee tool, you can hold down the shift key
while dragging the selection to create a perfect square or circle. Notice you can still
change the size, but the proportion remains the same. Another useful trick is to move
the entire selection as you create it. Often, you will find your marquee starting point isnt
at the exact intended spot on the canvas. To move the selection, hold down the space
bar and drag the mouse; the selection will move instead of resizing. To continue to
resize, release the space bar.
After you have created a selection, you can modify it by adding or subtracting from it.
Start by creating a selection on the canvas. To add to the selection, hold down the shift
key and create a second selection. This new marquee will add to the first as long as
you continue to hold the shift key before each selection, you will add to it. To subtract
from a selection, follow the same process but hold down the alt/option key. You can use
these two methods to create countless figures, which can then be used to apply filters to
a custom area or create shapes.
Once you have selected an area, you can apply different uses to that area. Use a
Photoshop filter and it will only apply to the selected area. Cut, copy and paste the area
to use it elsewhere or alter your image. You can also use many of the functions within the

edit menu, such as fill, stroke, or transform, to only change the selected area.
Remember you can create a new layer and then fill a selection to build shapes. Once you
learn the marquee tools and use them with ease, you will be able to manipulate not just
the whole, but parts, of your images.
1. Define layers in Photoshop?

Ans: Photoshop documents are composed of layers, which can basically be described as single
transparent sheets which hold particular pieces of an image. These layers can contain images, text, and
vector graphics, and can be rearranged and grouped according to user needs. Layers are controlled
with the use of the Layers pane. Often times, when you find yourself frustrated with Photoshop, it is
because you are trying to perform operations on a layer that is not currently selected. Simply click on
the name of a layer in order to designate it as the current layer. Whenever you add text to an image in
Photoshop, the text appears on a new layer. You can "merge down" layers to consolidate them, and
"flatten image" to force the entire contents of the image onto one layer.
2. Describe the various ways of manipulating layers.
Ans:
3. How to move and merge layers in Photoshop?
Ans:
4. Explain the features of layers palette.
Ans:

5. Explain the different types of layer style effects in Photoshop

CS5?
Ans: Layer style effects as given below:
Drop Shadow
Adds a shadow that falls behind the contents on the layer.
Inner Shadow
Adds a shadow that falls just inside the edges of the layers content,
giving the layer a recessed appearance.
Outer Glow and Inner Glow
Add glows that emanate from the outside or inside edges of the layers
content.
Bevel and Emboss
Add various combinations of highlights and shadows to a layer.
Satin
Applies interior shading that creates a satiny finish.
Color, Gradient, and Pattern Overlay
Fills the layers content with a color, gradient, or pattern.

Stroke
Outlines the object on the current layer using color, a gradient, or a
pattern. It is particularly useful on hard-edged shapes such as type.
6. How can you apply or edit a custom layer style in a layer?
Ans: We cannot apply layer styles to a background layer, a locked
layer, or a group. To apply a layer style to a background layer,
first convert it into a regular layer.

1. Select a single layer from the Layers panel.

2. Do one of the following:

Double-click the layer, outside the layer name or thumbnail.

Click the Add a Layer Style icon

at the bottom of the Layers
panel and choose an effect from the list.

Choose an effect from the Layer > Layer Style submenu.

To edit an existing style, double-click an effect displayed below

the layer name in the Layers panel. (Click the triangle next to the
Add a Layer Style icon
to display the effects contained in the
style.)

3. Set effect options in the Layer Style dialog box.

4. Add other effects to the style, if desired. In the Layer Style dialog
box, click the check box to the left of the effect name to add the
effect without selecting it.

7. Write an account of the working with text in

Photoshop.
Ans: When you create text in Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 5, the text is created on its
own layer. To create a text layer, choose the Type tool and click the image area. You can
also click and drag to create a text area. The Options bar gives you the controls to
change the font, size, blending mode, and color of the text.
When youre finished typing, you must confirm your text entry by selecting the check
box (on the right of the Options bar) or pressing Ctrl+Enter

the direction that you want to rotate the text.
3. Press Enter on your keyboard to apply the rotation effect.
WARPING TEXT

When you click the Create Warped Text button on the Options bar, the Warp Text dialog
box appears. You can use it to apply different types of distortion to your text. You can still

edit text thats been warped. To remove a warp, click the Create Warp Text button again
and select None from the Style drop-down list.
1. What is the use of rasterizing text in Photoshop?
Ans: Rasterizing converts the type layer into a normal layer and makes its contents
uneditable as text. A warning message appears if you choose a command or tool that
requires a rasterized layer. Some warning messages provide an OK button you can click
to rasterize the layer.

Select the type layer and choose Layer > Rasterize > Type.

2. Explain how to add different types of text into the image.

Ans:

1. Choose your image file.

2. Open the image with Photoshop. ( Right click on the photo >> Open
with >> Select Photoshop.)
3. Select the 'Type tool. Commonly it is in the left side of your screen on
the tools palettes.
4. Click on the image where you want to add the text.
5. Write the text with your keyboard.
6. Select 'Move tool' from the tools window. Re-position your text if you
want.
7. Open the 'Character' palette from dropdown list under 'window'
menu. You can change font style, font color, font size etc. there. In order
to format your text, you'll need to highlight it before making your
desired changes.

3. Explain the steps involved in adding an image to a text in Photoshop.

Ans:

4. How do you adjust image colors, tones and the specific portion of an image? How
can level dialog box be used?
5. How to change the orientation of a type layer?
Ans:

Change the orientation of a type layer

The orientation of a type layer determines the direction of type lines in
relation to the document window (for point type) or the bounding box
(for paragraph type). When a type layer is vertical, the type flows up
and down; when a type layer is horizontal, the type flows from left to
right. Dont confuse the orientation of a type layer with the direction of
characters in a type line.
1. Select the type layer in the Layers panel.
2. Do one of the following:

Select a type tool, and click the Text

Orientation button
in the options
bar.

Choose Layer > Type > Horizontal, or

choose Layer > Type > Vertical.

Choose Change Text Orientation from

the Character panel menu.

in the options bar.
Choose Layer > Type > Horizontal, or choose Layer > Type > Vertical.
Choose Change Text Orientation from the Character panel menu.
6. What do you mean by selection in Photoshop?
Ans: Selections refer to regions in an image that will be affected by the various tools. A

selection in Photoshop is similar to a selection that you highlight in a word processing

application. Once you have selected an area, you can apply a tool to it, such as paintbrush, or
perform an operation such as copy or crop. Selections can be any shape and size; the shape
depends on which selection tool you are working with.
7. What is JPEG?
Ans: Joint Photographic Experts Group. Supports thousands of colors. It is a lossy
compression format. Compresses files by removing data. Provides a range of
compressions. Best for continuous tone images, such as a photograph. Most often
used for Web Graphics.
8. What is GIF?
Ans: Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) only supports 256 colors. Non-lossy
compression format. Works best for images composed of solid colors. Available
through the Save for Web command under the File Menu. Most often used for Web
Graphics
9. What is .psd ?

Ans: A .psd file is the file format in which Photoshop saves documents by default. It is a
multi-layer document that retains its full editing options when saved.
10.Define Saturation and sepia tone.
11.
What is meant by tweening?
12.Discuss the adjustment of image colors and tones and the adjustment in specific

25.What are brushers and how are they used?
26.What are features of Photoshops gradient tool? How to use mask layers in
Photoshop to make transparent gradients?
27.How are conversion of JPEG and GIF done in Photoshop?
28.Write a short note on Hue and Saturation controls in Image coloring.
29.What do you mean by color calibration?
30.Write the components of an image.
31.What is meant by Resolution of an image?

Ans: Resolution refers to the number of pixels in a full size image. An image with hi resolution
contains more information than an image with lo resolution, and therefore, one can always
convert a hi-res image to a lo-res image. However, because information is lost in the
conversion, the reverse is not true. If you were to increase the resolution of a lo-res image, the
result would be fuzzy.
