Helping Hands announces new vision

Helping Hands, the local community
food pantry that has served the area for 20
years now is announcing a new vision for
their ministry services. There are two ar-
eas that are requiring the most attention.
First, Helping Hands is seeking to
bring on its first paid staff member by hir-
ing a Coordinator of Ministry Services.
Many people in our community want to
help other people. They may have certain
talents and skills that they are willing to
put to use to help others. They may have
wood they would be happy to give to an
elderly widow to keep her house warm.
They may be willing to provide transpor-
tation to get people to the doctors office.
The vision of a Ministry Coordinator will
connect these people with one another
and cause Helping Hands to “Help” people
with more than just food. A job descrip-
tion for this part time position is being
developed, but anyone who believes that
they have the talents and skills for such an
important role should send a letter of in-
terest including a resume’ if available, or
some background information to PO Box
532, Howard City, MI 49329.
Secondly, Helping Hands has deter-
mined that they need to find an alterna-
tive facility to more efficiently function
and that is better able to meet the growing
demand for its services in the community.
The current facility has storage in a base-
ment area and the work of moving food
from one place to another is very chal-
lenging. While there have been some gra-
cious relocation opportunities presented
to Helping Hands, a number of which are
still being considered, Helping Hands is
also looking at the possibility of construct-
ing a facility specifically designed for its
purposes.
In either case, Helping Hands will need
to raise significant dollars to pay for a new
facility, or to repair and renovate any oth-
er relocation options that are available to
it. The goal would be for Helping Hands
to sell its current facility and use those
proceeds to also assist in the needs for a
new facility. With that goal in mind, Help-
ing Hands is announcing a capital fund
raising campaign to assist in its efforts.
The amount of contributions that Help-
ing Hands receives between now and the
end of 2010 toward this capital campaign
will be a large factor in the determining
what relocation options are reasonable for
the ministry. All donations toward this
capital campaign will be segregated into a
separate account for that purpose. Dona-
tions can be made to the Helping Hands

acquiring the current Helping Hands fa-

The vision outlined above is supported
by the local ministerial association and
Helping Hands also believe that it will
continue to receive the incredibly faith-
ful support of the community as it works
toward expanding its service to the com-
munity.

April 24 at Sand Lake
VFW
The Tri County Little League
has been busy this off season
working toward raising funds to
improve their fields and facilities.
The latest event will be on April
24, 2010, when the league will be
holding a scrapbook event at the
VFW in Sand Lake.
Proceeds from this event will
go toward the construction of
a concession stand at the Sand
Lake complex. Over the last sev-
eral months, through donations
of time and material along with
fundraising efforts, the league is
about ready to begin construc-
tion of a combonation concession
stand/restroom facility.
“This is something that we
have wanted to do for a long
time.” said league president Amy
Blake. “We have been working
hard toward this goal and we are
80% there.”
The scrapbooking event on
April 24, 2010 will move them
closer to their goal. The event will
run from 8:00AM to midnight.
The $40 entry fee gives each
scrapbooker their own 8’ table,
a continental breakfast, snacks
throughout the day and pizza in
the evening. Representatives
from Cinderella’s Slipper and
Stampin’ Up will be on hand to
help those who need supplies.

Kathryn M. Xerri
Army Pvt. Kathryn M. Xerri has graduated from basic
combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the
Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical
fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic com-
bat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet
training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship,
armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics,
military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot
marches, and field training exercises.
She is the daughter of Laura Xerri of Newaygo.
Xerri is a 2008 graduate of Newaygo High School.

Air Force Airman Russell R. Parker graduated from basic
military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio,

The work of area artist, Carolyn Steenland from Newaygo,
is part of the 46th Annual MEA/MAEA (Michigan Educa-
tion Association/Michigan Art Education Association) Art
Acquisitions Purchase Exhibition. The artwork, “Solstice”
is a Fused Glass piece and received an Honorable Mention
Award and MEA Purchase Award. The exhibition is designed
to highlight the high caliber of art produced by artist-educa-
tor members in Michigan. Seventy-nine pieces were selected
for the exhibit.
The exhibition was juried by Diane Scully, a visual arts
teacher in the Columbia Heights Schools in Minnesota.
The exhibit is on display at MEA headquarters weekdays
8 am - 5 pm through April 22, 2010. MEA headquarters is

“Girl of My Dreams” was written by Michigan playwright
Michal Jacot. Mr. Jacot brings a great story to his audiences.
The play begins when David (played by Michael Kole) and
Jerry (portrayed by Matt Aslakson) come home from a “hard
day” of work at the bottling plant. Jerry is a party animal
while David is more of a stay-at-home type guy. What do
you do when your best friend is always going out and hav-
ing fun while you stay at home? David invents a girlfriend!
Then enters David’s mother (Beverly Guikema), an over-
protective type, who does her best to take care of her son.
Emily Broton portrays the “girl” and Larry “Butch” Davis
completes the cast as Mr. Preston.

Christopher J. Nielson
Christopher J. Nielsen, age 41, of Gowen, went
home to Glory on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. He was
preceded in death by his sister, Heather Nielsen.
He is survived by his wife Tammy, his children
Mikaela, Jordan, Trevor, EmmaGrace, Justine,
and Trent. Also surviving are his parents, James
and Sharon Nielsen of Howard City, mother-
in-law Rose Daling of Kentwood, father-in-law
Dan and Theresa Petersen of Cedar Springs, sis-
ter Heidi Nielsen of Zeeland, sister-in-law and
brother-in-law Michelle and Dwight DeJong of
Howard City, and his niece and several nephews.
Funeral services took place Sunday, April 11, 2010
at Sunshine Church, with interment in Rosedale

Charles Joseph Finkler
Mr Charles Joseph Finkler, aged 67, of How-
ard City, passed away Wednesday April 14, 2010,
at his home surrounded by his family. Charles
was born Sept 13, 1942, in Grand Rapids MI to
Carl J. and Jennie R (Bono) Finkler of Marne.
He worked 37 years at Synergis Technologies in
Grand Rapids. He enjoyed family, friends and the
freedom of riding his motorcycle and was always
there when needed. He is survived by his wife
Helen; children Angela Garza, Rebecca (Adam)
Sarlo, and Eric Finkler; grandchildren Hope and
David Garza and Madelyn and Ashton Sarlo; par-
ents Carl and Jennie Finkler; sister Patricia (Eu-
gene) LeMieux; brother David (Claudia) Finkler;
