dominatethelandscapeas2016marchesforward?Canwearablesbreakthroughtobecomemainstream
products?Willtabletswhitheronthevine?Aresmarthomesprimedtotakeoff?Dodesktopcomputersmatter
anymore?
Techtitanshavealreadysetthetonefor2016.
Newtechnologywillbegintoriseasexistingproductsandcategoriesmatureandplateau.Thestorymoving
through2016won'tfocussomuchontheindividualpiecesrather,theimportantthemewillconcerntherole
eachpieceplaysinthelargerpicture.Deviceswillneedtobeabletostandontheirown,butsuccesswilldepend
ontheabilitytoconnecttoandsharewithothers.
Wearablesareagreatexample.
Ayearago,thebulkofwearablesdependedonnearbysmartphonesforinformation.Now,thefirstwaveof
cellularandtrulyindependentwearablesishittingthemarket.Thisindependenceexpandstheirscale,but
wearablesmustcontinuetointegratewithalltheaspectsofourdigitallives.ThesameistruefortheInternetof
Thingsandsmarthomes.
Whetherit'sthroughasmartphoneorsmartwatch,mobilepaymentsshouldexpandinscopeasretailersand
banksbegintoseetheirvalue.Withmoreoptionsthanever,consumerswillbeabletopayformoregoodsand
servicesfromtheirmobiledevices,thoughwemaystillneedtohaveourwalletsasbackup.Fingerprintsand
otherbiometricswillreachmainstreamusetosecureourdigitaltransactions.

Thehardwareweusewillbecomelessimportant.Whilesmartphones,tablets,laptops,andwearablesallhavea

senseforuserswhodon'tneedportabilityandwanttobuymorepowerforlessdollars.Inthecostversus
performanceequation,thedesktopstillusuallycomesoutahead,aslongasyoudon'tneedmobility.Istill
routinelyuseadesktopasasecondarymachineforcertaintestingorresourceintensivetasks.Icanupgrade
thedesktopwaybeyondwhatI'dwanttopayforinalaptop.Thedesktopwillbearoundforquitesometime,
althoughitwillneverbethedominantforceincomputingthatitoncewas.

natureofiOSthatIknowofanumberofcompanies,mineincluded,wherestaffareditchingtheiriPad

competitiveamongthepurelyinputdevicesanditisacomputerthatcanoperateunteatheredtoo.Itlooks
