PRINGLE TRAVEL

OBJECTIVE: Construct a packaging for a single Pringle potato and chip, send it through the mail and have it
arrive in one whole piece.
ENTRY: A group can have a maximum of 4 members and must register their entry on or before 5:00 P.M. of
January 22, 2016. Only entries from Mapua Makati are allowed to submit their registration forms on the day of
the competition. The STUDENT COPY of the registration form must be brought on the competition day or the entry
will not be accepted.
PACKAGING:
1. The packaging must be rectangular (with measurable length, width, and height) for easy measurement
of volume. The rectangular package must have minimum dimensions of 4 in x 5 in. x 0.5 in. Packages
under the minimum dimensions will be disqualified.
2. The packaging must be made of paper materials or wood and must be constructed by the students.
Ready-made boxes and containers are not allowed.
3. Bubble wrap, Styrofoam, foam, insulation and similar materials are not allowed in any part of the
packaging.
4. The Pringle must not be altered in any way to increase its strength.
MECHANICS:
1. The package must be mailed through any Philippine mailing service from any point of origin OUTSIDE
Metro Manila and addressed to:
Department of Physics
West Building 3rd Floor
Mapua Institute of Technology
Muralla St., Intramuros
Manila
2. The package must not be marked fragile or handle with care.
3. The package must reach the Physics Department not later than 5:00 P.M. of January 28, 2016.
4. The students must keep their mailing receipt and bring them on the competition day. Groups with no
receipts will not be allowed to open their respective packages.
COMPETITION:
1. A group member must show the receipt to the competition officials. Upon approval, the group will be
given a competition form and competition number.
2. A contestant will be given 2 minutes to open the package. Tools (scissors, cutter, etc) can be used but
must be brought by the contestant.
3. The contestant must extract the Pringle and hold it in front of him/her for inspection of the judges.
4. Any crack or chipping in the Pringle will disqualify the entry.
5. If the Pringle is whole and undamaged, the contestant must eat it. If the contestant refuses to eat the
Pringle, the entry is disqualified.
6. If upon inspection, the judges suspect that the Pringle is tampered or altered in any way, the entry will
be disqualified.
SCORING: All qualified entries will be scored as follows:

SCORE = (mass) x (volume)

The entry with the lowest computed score will be declared the winner. 2 nd and 3rd places will be the next
two lowest scores respectively. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placers.The decision of the
Board of Judges is final.
