Electronics have revolutionized our lifestyle. Telephones, radios, TVs,
computers and cell phones are items we use daily. However, these items
make up the bulk of electronics that threaten the environment because of
their e-waste.
As new products hit the market, relevant information and resources are
necessary to ensure outdated items are properly discarded. The next time
you upgrade your cell phone or get the latest video game system, think
twice about what happens to the old gadget.
Why Recycle TVs?

Garden Talk: Growth on crepe myrtle, information about the alyssum and pruning Muscadine grape vines
Q: I’ve seen the photo on the
Nassau County Extension web-
site of lichen but I have some-
thing else growing on my crepe
myrtle stems.  What could it
be? MJ
Lichen
A: The cutting you brought into
the Nassau County Yulee satellite
office did have a growth on it and it
is another type of lichen.  Remem-
ber lichen is a combination of algae
and fungi which live in a symbiotic
relationship.  The alga provides the
food and fungus supplies the protec-
tion in the form of a home. Hand
pulling the lichen off could be done
as the lichen is not truly harm-
ing the plant. However, I am con-
cerned about the crepe myrtle and
think it may have been planted too
deeply.  Remove some of the mulch
and soil from around the root area
to determine how deeply the top
roots are covered. The roots of trees
and shrubs should be just at the soil
level.  The mulch covering the roots
should only be a couple of inches
deep as well. If too much soil is on
top of the roots, remove it from un-
der the tree’s drip line or where the
tree branches end. You can bring
clippings from your landscape to
have the problems diagnosed at the
Nassau County Extension satellite
office anytime between the hours of
10am – 2pm on the following dates:

about Sweet alyssum? I saw it
in a hanging basket, draping
over the sides, and it has such a
pretty white flower cluster. RW
A: Sweet alyssum, Lobularia mar-
itima, is a hardy ground cover annu-
al which grows to about 10 inches
tall and spreads about 1 foot wide.
Dense clusters of tiny snow-white,
Alyssum
pink or purple flowers bloom con-
tinuously throughout the growing
season, which in our area is winter
through early spring. The flowering
time can be lengthened by pinching
off any of the dead or dying blos-
soms.  There are several varieties
and the one you saw has a spread-
ing growth habit which makes it a
perfect specimen for hanging bas-
kets. Sweet alyssum thrives in par-
tial sun to partial shade, in almost
any soil however they will produce
fewer flowers in full sun and poor
soil conditions. For more complete

A:  The best time to prune mus-
cadine grape vines in Florida is
mid-January through mid-March.
Touch-up pruning can be done
throughout the year and of course
removal of broken or dead limbs
can be perfomed at any time. It is
common for the stems to bleed af-
ter pruning but research has not
shown this to cause any permanent
injury to the plants nor does it ap-
pear to reduce the ability of the vine
to produce grapes. There is no need
to paint the cuts with any time of
sealant. In fact, current research
indicates there is no benefit to us-
ing pruning paint to cover pruning
cuts on any tree, shrub or vine. For

Energy drink causes death of 19-year-old in Bryceville

On January 19 of this year, after consum-
ing one can of Nitrous Monster: Super Dry
Energy Drink, my cousin’s 19-year-old son,
Andrew “Drew” James, passed away sudden-
ly, though immediately receiving CPR until
the arrival of the paramedics, who took him
to Shands Hospital in Jacksonville. On Thur-
sady, April 1 the Medical Examiner told my
cousin it was due to Cardiac Arrhythmia due
to Ischemic Cardiomyopathy. In other words,
his heart quit working without any previous
medical reason to do so, although the cause of
death on the death certificate certainly makes
it sound as if it were a long term problem. She
requested the MedExam call her, although
she never truly expected to get that call.
Much to all of our surprise, the Medical
Examiner called her on April 5 and said he
did a very thorough examination on her son
and the cause of death in our terms is due
to too much caffeine at one time. He agreed
with what we had been thinking all along; he
said Drew had no prior enlarged heart, heart
disease or anything that would have made
him think he could not handle a drink that is
sold over the counter without a single warn-
ing. His blood toxicology showed there was
only caffeine and nicotine.
Through research, we have since found out
that these drinks, at a minimum, make your
body, specifically the heart and nervous sys-
tem, react the same as actually doing cocaine.
Although these affects do not last as long as
doing a one time hit of cocaine, They are not
only as addictive as any drug or alcohol, the
results are enough that just one drink can kill.
While in most cases long term use of these
drinks will eventually lead to serious life long

health problems, the reality is that it really
can take a life after the consumption of just
one.
Just like a kick or hit directly on the heart
at the precise moment between beats can
cause a fatal heart attack, one energy drink
can have the same affect. The results of a
study conducted in 2008 showed that the in-
gestion of one, 250ml can of sugar-free Red
Bull, in a sample of 30 healthy young adults,
had an immediate detrimental effect on both
endothelial (the thin layer of cells that line
the interior surface of blood vessels forming
an interface between circulating blood in the
lumen and the rest of the vessel wall) func-
tion, and normal blood coagulation. This
temporarily raised the cardiovascular risk in
these individuals to a level comparable to that
of an individual with established coronary ar-

tery disease. This in and of itself is enough to
cause instant death. While medical examin-
er’s are reluctant to put cause of death as caf-
feine overdose, just as they will not label the
cause of someone’s death from septic shock. It
is most always labeled as “respiratory failure”
among other things. Why would they want
to blame the hospital? It would cost them too
much in revenue. But this isn’t about septic
shock. This is about the life of a young man,
just beginning to live, who had no underly-
ing medical problems; no drugs, legal or il-
legal, and no alcohol in his system. While
caffeine was listed as one thing in his system,
surprise, surprise. It doesn’t give the exact
percentage. Caffeine overdose or intoxication
(an acute overdose of caffeine usually in ex-
cess of about 300 milligrams, dependent on
body weight and level of caffeine tolerance,
can result in a state of central nervous system
over-stimulation called, caffeine intoxication,
it is a very real cause of death and it doesn’t
take a lot of drinks with high caffeine content
to cause that death. Just one. Count it. One
drink with an overload of caffeine is enough
to cause that overdose. The drink my cousin’s
son drank, Nitrous Monster: Super Dry En-
ergy Drink, had 5000 mg of the energizing
ingredients. 5000!! That’s 4999 more than
anyone needs to overload their system. While
it doesn’t break down in the ingredients in
specific amounts, it doesn’t take a rocket sci-
entist to figure out that 5000 mg is TOO
MUCH!
Another thing all of these drinks have in
common is the high amounts of vitamins
used to “boost” energy. Regardless of how
many milligrams of vitamins are ingested,
your body only needs so much. The rest is
discarded through urination. There again is
another misconception regarding these dan-
gerous drinks. Other “natural energy” ingre-
dients that are touted, in high quantity, are
every bit as dangerous as caffeine. These drinks
are basically “legal” cocaine. In Germany, 11
of 16 states have already banned Red Bull.
Hopefully, they will follow suit with ALL
energy drinks. And in turn, the FDA will
follow suit in the United States. Our fear is
this: will it take death after death after death
before someone will stand up to these com-
panies and say “enough is enough,” and more
thorough research will be done, leading to, at
the very least, the labeling these drinks, just
as cigarettes are labeled regarding the health
risks of smoking and alcohol is at least labeled
in regards to the health risks when consumed
by women who may be pregnant, which will
in turn help parents and young adults alike
stop and think about what is being ingested.
Also, like cigarettes and alcohol, teens and
younger adults can’t fully comprehend these
dangers. With warning labels, at least their
parents have a fighting chance of keep them
out of their children if a law is put into place
making it illegal for anyone under the age of
21 to purchase them.
Without the help of the media however,
getting the word out is virtually impossible.
This information MUST be made public.
Awareness of the potential dangers MUST
be made available to parents. These drinks
MUST be moved into coolers inside of the
stores, just like beer is separate from all of the
other beverages sold. Keeping it between lem-
onaide and Coca Cola makes it seem as in-
nocent as either of those drinks, and it simply
is not innocent.
