Developmental Issues of Education Within the Philippines

Education is the sole benefactor for social stability as it can create better learnings and
opportunities that can help individuals and others to consume and give what they have
succeeded through. In the Philippines we deal with corruption that contains issues
relating on how education being accessible to all and how is it being influenced on
communities throughout the country.
Through the politics and media, it can be deceiving or admirable with all the acts that
are told or done in order to make it seem its believable to all, even when there is maybe
not enough supporting evidence that can explain truly why issues dealing with
education that should development an understanding of how one can use their
intelligence to acquire their own literacy to interact within their communities.
The education system as it seems that the Philippines may not have the budget to move
to a more research-oriented academic culture as it needs to develop from traditional
values to be more modernized on where it can work in our current society. It also deals
with overpopulation in which providing more classrooms is needed to maintain
interaction with each other.
Educators that deal with being over-worked and under-paid leads to emasculation and
demoralization of there well being which effect students to have a difficult time with their
studies. Some educators use conservatism for the sake of convenience, prefer the oldstyle teaching paradigm where they view themselves as the fountain of knowledge and
use their students as nothing but uninformed individuals to be taught from scratch.
The lack of diversity through studying for something you want to learn for yourself and
not put into a fixed path that wasnt determined by yourself. Even though most Filipinos
dont have the luxury of choosing what they want to be and to be able to pursue their
own dreams as only choosing what is the only available choice that is offered to them
because of the economic social standards that bind them to only be able to choose from

limited opportunities. It is one of the most reasons why today most Filipinos strive to
work and study abroad to look for a better lifestyle as they do see that there isnt much
for them if they stay and suffer from todays society conditions that effect them as a
whole.
The objective is to show that it should make a difference that would help improve or
enlighten individuals that can have better idea on how education should be aware
through ones belief. It should help to create something influential for all to understand
issues that deal with education for them to be solved or created. How to improve of
quality and quantity of education in means of literacy. How can one individual benefit by
obtaining a wide perspective on how education is portrayed here and how it can effect
others for change.
Methodology
The research will conduct by asking certain questions through Socratic methodology to
participants about their ideas and opinions on developmental issues of education. The
research will be done through social media and interviewing of each individual through
a series of type of questions as:
1. Conceptual clarification questions.
To get them to think more about what exactly they are asking or thinking about. Prove
the concepts behind their argument. Use basic questions that get them to go deeper.

2. Probing assumptions.
Probing their assumptions makes them think about the presuppositions and
unquestioned beliefs on which they are founding their argument.

3. Probing rationale, reasons and evidence.

Acosta, Cartier
DES 2-1
Sociology
When they give a reasonable example for their arguments and then explain that
reasoning rather than assuming it is a given.

4. Questioning viewpoints and perspectives.

Most arguments are given from a particular position. So attack the position. Show that
there are other, equally valid, viewpoints.

5. Probe implications and consequences.

The argument that they give may have logical implications that can be made.

6. Questions about the question.

And you can also get reflexive about the whole thing, turning the question in on itself.
Use their attack against themselves.

The data gathered shall be analyzed through the quality of the answers taken into
observations and compare and contrast the values of each individual that has
participated in this research to come up with a conclusion defining the issue as a whole
with supporting evidence to explain the reasons why.

1. What are your thoughts on education being taught here in the Philippines?
2. What changes do you think should or should not happen to the educational
system established here?
3. What do you think of other cultures perspectives on education?
4. How would you explain the relationship between students and teachers?
5. Would you think educational stereotypes over one or many cultures is an issue
that has influenced the society and culture today?
1) The education here in the Philippines often depends on the type of school
where an individual is being educated. Sadly, sometimes a persons intellect
is being judged depending on the school or university he or she came from.
When it comes to education in the Philippines, we could actually have it at its
best but the number one problem here in the country is the fund that the
government has for the education system. In reality the government renders
fund and it is actually bigger than those who are in private schools. That is
why sometimes they say that students in public schools are wealthier in
education rather than those in private. But why we cannot see that way? Is
rendering of fund or usage the problem?
2) There are basic concerns regarding education in the country like lack of
classrooms, lack of materials, books or references and there are a lot of
students in the country. Maybe we need more educators and the government
should invest more on the educators/teachers since they are the core of
education.
3) I think there are concerns with foreign students having trouble adjusting here
in the Philippines as one my friends told me about how different the teaching
methods are used here and can be difficult to comprehend.
4) Teachers lay the essential foundation for a persons education. Even
the best professors at the most prestigious universities are indebted to
teachers who took time and effort to prime and cultivate their desire for
education, knowledge, and understanding. Students are also aware of
these qualities as it can help each other to support and conserve a
better unity for them to interact and progress.

5) Considering the economic and employment situation today, many people feel
that it is important to get a good quality education first to be able to get
necessary qualifications for a desirable job. With that point of view, I would
say that educational stereotypes may depend on the economic and
employment situation of a certain country. Since our country face hardly on
economic and employment situation, a lot of Filipinos are very into taking their
children to a higher education in a good or well known industries. They put
effort on making their young ones enter college.

1) There are to many expectations about already knowing the material before its
even taught. For example, one of my professors are expecting to see that if
we knew some certain terms beforehand on a specific topic and then proceed
with only asking a few students about the certain terms and if they know it or
not and then praise or ridicule the person.
2) I suggest they teach a sex educational class in high school because I know at
least six people who got pregnant because they did not know about safe sex.
3) As a foreigner, I think like "what can I use to leave the country" instead of
"what can I do to make the Philippines better" because to be honest I am only
here to finish my degree and to go back to my country to work there.
4) Teachers dont understand that theyre easily manipulated by the students
because there was a case when one my classes teacher was being
pressured into doing things that were not necessarily right as an educator.
Some students would complain about how they dont want this and like how
they want that until it happens.
5) Coming from America I do believe that influences from other cultures do affect
the way Philippines education is taught to today. Because the Philippines was
mostly influenced by the Spanish, Japanese and the Americans on which how
the stereotypes were gain from each culture and still seen today in most
settings of schools taught from elementary through college.

1) The educational curriculum of the Philippines has been varied among its
numerous universities. Opportunities to pursue different courses and
vocations have been available to the masses in most areas of the country.
2) The upcoming k-12 system is the only change that comes to mind, since it
allows us to catch up to the international standards.
3) Cultural perspectives in education depends on which skill a culture values the
most. Cultural implications may also be dependent on personal opinion.
4) Relationships between students and teachers are also dependent on the
individual's attitudes, as well as their culture. Some are strict in their
interactions while others are somewhat loose.
5) There are, and always will be a social stigma or title that comes with some
educational curriculum. These manifest themselves in the methods and
interactions by which the younger generation learn about their environment
and the people around them.

1) Drug Education and Sex Education for the youth in some cases I believe is it
not taught widely through schools in the Philippines as it leads to illiterate actions
that are looked down upon on todays society.
2) Changes like learning about drugs and sex should be taught to young people
because this may lead to their curiosity and awareness.
3) Education is an opportunity to make a better future as my friend hes a
foreigner from America and he sees how most kids dont have the opportunity to
have an education and he wishes that the people should of the Philippines
should really look and solve this issue nationally.
4) Student teacher relationship in the Philippines in some cases were not good
because some students disrespect the teacher or the other way around.
5) Yes, because different cultures have their own beliefs, customs and traditions
and sometimes it must be strictly followed, thus having many culture in the
Philippines make other culture to adjust to them.

1) I think our education is far too lacking. It is true that we are more advance in
teaching in the early years... My brother studies in Canada right now, and
even though he is in grade 2, he still has not learned fractions yet his cousin
who studies here is already in fraction but is only at preschool. I dont know
where we lost our way, I am assuming it is because we dont have middle
school, I hope k12 can change that.
2) I think the k12 system is a great idea and should be further implemented and
experimented by the government.
3) I personally like Japan's perspective. In their school, middle schoolers are
already guided by the teachers on what path they want to take and how to get
there. If they want a musical degree, they will advise the student on the best
musical schools and what grades do they need, extra curricular, etc. They
view education as more than grades but as a tool to help children grow and
further their talents.
4) In our country, it is rare to see a teacher connect to a student deeply.
Normally students just want grades and the teacher just wants money. There
are some times however where teachers can connect well to the students, but
very rarely.
5) Here in the Philippines the case is that they really look into a person based on
the educational attainment. Like it is a pride here in the Phil. When your
parents or you are able to enter college because this is a poor country. Lot of
people isnt able to enter college Some here who have a family business or
already rich. They dont really put importance to education. They just go to
school. just go but dont really study. They just need to finish for a degree.

1) Education here in the Philippines in my opinion, have their ups and downs. To
me, I think with regards to education being taught here in the Philippines, it
lacks equal accessibility for the majority of the population in the country. For
example, there are more high quality schools located in the metro part of the
Philippines rather than in the provinces and other indigenous parts of the
country. It just goes to show that education here in the Philippines shows its
need to line itself with financial interest rather than societal interest.

2) I think the changes are happening already, and there are sociopolitical
movements facilitating that command. For example, free technical skills
education via the TESDA program. What I really need to stress out is that it
shouldn't be just the government providing us citizens what we want, we have
to do our part, and try to be part of the change that would make education
here in the Philippines prosper, and not just blame corrupt politics and brew
crab mentality.
3) Other cultures see education as necessary as we see it. Our perspective only
differs at how important education is, but nonetheless, everyone sees it as
something necessary.
4) Teachers are superior because of the fact that they impart the knowledge that
they have to us, however, if we are going to be completely honest and see the
faults of how the relationship of a teacher and student goes inside the
classroom, we will see that students are more often disrespected and
humiliated.
5) Yes, I believe educational stereotypes have been an issue in the society
today, especially here in the Philippines, because we tend to judge people by
the school they graduated from, or from the major they take. This can be
psychologically detrimental for one, and also have a high effect on job
application. Another reason why educational stereotypes have a deep effect
on our culture and society is peer or familial pressure. Some of us choose our
majors based on the opinions of our parents (some even forced), which of
course can affect the person's initiative and drive to study, thus effecting
graduation rates. It all boils down to how we can try to avoid educational
stereotypes, because right now, I think it is like a malignant growth that needs
to be cut from the surface of our educational system.

1) The education system in the Philippines differs from other countries that Ive
studied in as to terms of curriculum and the amount and selection of what is
to be taught. With that it is obvious that the education here makes students
strive and study very hard to pass subjects and such. Especially before the
implementation of K-12, students at a very young age in this country would be

Acosta, Cartier
DES 2-1

Sociology
faced with knowledge that, in comparison with other countries, should be
taught to an older population of students which then gave students an

advancement to obtain a vast amount of knowledge at a younger age.

2) I would have liked it if the Philippines didnt establish the K-12 system
because in my view it basically prolongs your academic life when majority of
what you learn within those extra two years isnt really applied in college.
Based on my experience as to being part of those students who didnt not
take part in K-12, I believe that students can make it through college at a
young age since your focus is more on your future career path.
3) I think that all cultures across the world believe that education is important in
a persons life. It is what helps you in getting a good career and being able to
manage your everyday life. Education is a gift that not everyone is privileged
of thus many people wish to have a chance to have an education for a better
future which shows us that there is a significance of education to everyone.
4) I think the key to being able to learn efficiently is to have a good relationship
with your teacher. If you despise your teacher it would just lessen your
interest in learning. A teacher gives students the education that they need and
if the relationship is bad then students and teachers may not have proper
communication as to what is being taught and what is to be learned. Also in
having a good relationship, a teacher can also provide you moral support onto
getting high marks and going towards the path that you chose for your future.
5) I do see that there is an influence with stereotyping cultures in terms of
education. For example, Asians are stereotyped as very intelligent people.
With this it automatically tells a person that if youre Asian you probably have
very high grades. People would automatically think that if they hired an Asian
person in a job they would be very good at it because of their stereotyped
educational background of having high grades. This of course isn't such a bad
thing if you think of it but then again it also adds a certain expectation of
people towards Asians thus adding pressure to them which could lead to
many outcomes if they do not reach these expectations.

1) I believe that every country should have the right to have education as a part
of their culture. Education being taught here in the Philippines is great and
indicates the gradual progression of our country.
2) One of the things I hope not to happen to the education of our country is for it
not to be removed from the country's system. I believe it's change from k-12
is a positive thing and shows how our country is developing in giving its
citizens a higher level of primary education.
3) I respect other cultures perspective on education. Most cultures take in more
value to higher education as to vocational education and I believe it's nothing
to look down upon.
4) I think the relationship between students and teacher can vary between the
individuals of a certain setting. For me Ive seen some students and teachers
that who would act differently towards each other depending on who you are.
5) I believe the education stereotypes do influence our culture and society today.
There have been issues of the transfer of college graduate education to other
country's such as the USA with them marking the graduates from the
Philippines as non-credible or underqualified. Although this is true, countries
should have the right to the quality of their college graduates/future
employees since this will decrease the risk for malpractice and incompetence.
- Colleen Santos, CRS, DLSHSI
1) The educational system here in the Philippines is improving. Through the new
k to 12 system. Every student is given the opportunity to learn more and be
able to work as soon as they graduate in high school. so I Believe that the
education in the Philippines is growing and becoming better.
2) Change is a must in our educational system, it is good to know that we will be
adopting the k to 12 system, since other countries has long been practicing
this system. I believe that more vocational courses are needed and should be
added to the high school subject. the government should also support and
give much priority to the educational programs, so that everyone can study.

Acosta, Cartier
DES 2-1
Sociology
3) I believe that other cultures would also want the best education for their
family. a school that would provide excellent teaching, facilities and will
develop their child's personality.
4) The school is the second home of the children; teachers are the second mom
or dad that students look up to. Teachers, provides knowledge to their
students and they also learn from them. While students are guided by the
teachers, they are being taught of values, important knowledge and helps
them in developing their talent and skill. Students are being taught with what
is right and wrong, but they also have the right to correct their mentors. So I
think that students and teacher are both learning from each other.
5) Yes, educational stereotype is an issue that has influenced the society and
culture today. For example, when someone applies for a job, the first thing
they look up to is the educational background of a person, most would prefer
someone who is a graduate from a better school, or someone who is license
passer, or who has more educational attainment. So yes, education is that
important, it changes one's future and opportunities.
- Joy Kasten Delfin Saballegue, CHS Biochemistry, DLSHSI
1) For me, the educational system here in the Philippines feels so condensed
with the fixed amount of time allotted for each educational level and the depth
of learning that is expected from each student. It has its pros and cons, but I
think it could use a lot of improvements.
2) Personally, I think the educational system prior to the implementation of the
K-12 system was more beneficial and convenient. Although the work load was
compressed more prior to the change, being two years advanced was the
main advantage to me. Although it's the same system as schools in America,
it seems useless to add two extra years of high school when the first two
years of college are usually a continuation of general education subjects.
3) All cultures probably believe that education is one of the most important
aspects in life. I think that each culture has a different system that reflects its
morals and values, which carries over on what kind of teachers they look for
and what kind of learning styles they choose to implement in their institutions.
In the end, I think all cultures generally want students to strive in their

Acosta, Cartier
DES 2-1

Sociology
education for a successful life, we all just have a different idea of what it

means and what it takes to get there.

4) The relationship between students and teachers here, as I have observed, is
a good balance of friendship and professional, depending on the educational
level. Although I have seen teacher-student relationships more inclined
towards friendship than professional, there is always a boundary and respect
given towards the teacher in the classroom. A good relationship between the
two helps the teacher connect and relate to students, which is an important
trait that can influence students' performance.
5) Educational stereotypes can have a big influence on students. For instance,
an Asian student is usually associated with being smart, an over achiever, or
someone that is always on top of all of their academics. This kind of
impression can put a lot of pressure on Asians to fulfill these expectations in
order to feel competent or good enough in their studies. Average and
struggling students may wonder why they aren't as smart as others and
underestimate their abilities, and the above average students may not be able
to learn how to cope with their failures. This is only one cultural example, but
it's evident as to why educational stereotypes are toxic and should be a
concern for all institutions.

Discussion
From the data I gathered through my interviews. My first question consists most of
positive feedback and some were neutral and only one was particularly negative. From
the positive feedback I was pleased to see that most of my respondents really gave a
good descriptive answers on what they think on how education is being taught in the
Philippines. A lot said about how K-12 is a key factor to help the educational system to
grow and talked about their pros and cons on how education is taught here. Some
explain the use of accessibility is limited and how it should be more opened to the
people of the Philippines. They also explain how government and money is a big issue
when it comes to private and public schools. For the negative side the respondent was

Acosta, Cartier

describing how education can be so unfair when it comes to expectancy of an individual
through family, peers and educators.
As for my second question my respondents gave some great advice on certain changes
that should be implemented like K-12 is something that they are really great for to see to
happen to the Philippines as its a step towards a better stable implementation for here
and on how its beneficial and convenient to all Filipinos. One suggested that they
shouldnt be no change to K-12 system because the respondent didnt prefer the
change of prolonging your education and believed that starting with college as of now is
without K-12 is still a great time at a young age to start and choose a path for your own
career. One explained how we shouldnt rely on the government and politics but
ourselves in all communities to help make these changes prosper. Some said that drug
and sex education should really be more implemented here based on how most the
adolescent boys and girls here are not fully aware of the causes and issues that could
occur to them and others. One said that changes to materialistic is something that also
need to change like the classrooms, books or references and how population and size
of facilities is a big factor on how these things should be obtained and acquire more
educators to help the bigger population of students to be able to assess the amount of a
teacher to students ratio.
For my third question a lot was talked about similarities and differences about education
between the Filipino culture and the ones they described. Some described how culture
defines what type of person you are based on the education you learned from. Some
say that its a blessing and priority to have education and to explain how a culture
develops and progress through learning to help future educators and students to
become more relative and aware with each other. One said that there not a lot extra
curricular activities to help ones subjects for a better outcome of their performances,
because the respondent believes that the Philippines has some type of fixed education
where as youre not independently choosing or deciding things for yourself but having
them decided for you which can cause creativity issues.

Acosta, Cartier
DES 2-1
Sociology
For my forth question, the relationship between students and teachers was described in
a lot of ways that were positive and negative. For some say that teachers are
responsible for what students learn and students are responsible for applying those
practices in everyday use. One said that It depends on the setting and how all
individuals act upon others individuals as they see who you are. Some say having a
good relationship can help students and teacher relate and connect to help support
better influences that can boost their performances. One said theres an issue with
superiority as the teacher is doesnt care for its students but only for its beneficiary as a
job and some teachers would be disrespectful and humiliate their students. One said
the interaction varies between the personality of the person which can set a mood
between students and teachers which helps describe the situation of what kind setting
do they belong to. One said students are being manipulative and pressuring there
teachers and vice versa when it comes to something they dont want and something
they do want until it happens.
For my fifth and final question explained through the respondents as most educational
stereotypes are still alive to today and how one describe how Asians are defined to be
smart, overachiever and a lot of expectations come from these stereotypes because of
other cultures that define you as one characteristic that could be true not true. Some
say its a good and bad thing when it comes to getting a job on when they ask about
your educational background and more which effects the lifestyle of the individual.
Some say when it comes to different cultures, their own beliefs, customs and traditions
are sometimes influenced on how things work in other cultures that can co-exist and not
co-exist. One suggest that educational stereotypes are something we need to drive
away from since its one a major root problem within our education and society as
Filipinos. It can help or discourage when other cultures are only basing your personality
on stereotypes. One said the Historical facts over the centuries has made these
stereotypes become true to other cultures as the Filipinos were influenced by the
Spanish, Japanese and the Americans.

In conclusion to my discussion, all my objectives were met on how it should make a
difference that would help improve or enlighten individuals that can have better idea on
