Minners trapped underground in Chile

The story of the thirty-three miners trapped underground in Chile was in newspapers and on T V all over
theworid.
On August 5th 2011 , the miners were working about 700 meters underground in the San Jos mine,
about 800 kilometers north of the Chilean capital, Santiago, when part of the mine's roof collapsed. The
rocks fell down and the miners could not escape, but fortunately they had oxygen, some food and water.
The people on the surface decided to drill holes down through the rock. They wanted to contact the
miners. It was a very difificult job because the rock was so hard.
On August 22nd, a drill went down very cise to the miners. They heard and saw it, and used tape to put
a piece of paper on it with a message saying, in Spanish, "All thirty-three of us are fine in the
shelter.'The people on the surface saw the message, they were, of course, happy - the miners were alive!
The whole of Chile celebrated.
The next thing to do, of course, was to try to rescue the miners. Soon aer their families received the
miners' message, the people on the surface sent medicine down to them. A few days later, they sent the
miners their first hot mea!, but they sent the food in small cups because the drill hole was very small.
Relatives of the miners were camping near the mine and writing messages on pieces of paper. They just
expected to have them back.
