Our 3rd Annual Healthy Kids Day event was

another huge success. The ASYMCA hosted
the event on the baseball field behind our
Murphy Canyon Headquarters. Lunch was
provided by Souplantation and volunteers
from the ASW base and USD athletics were on
hand to take help out!

From the Desk of Executive Director Paul Steffens:
As the sounds of Hawaiian music and the magic of Hawaiian dancing filled the Admiral Baker
Clubhouse dining room, the importance volunteering took center stage. As we honored hundreds
of individuals who, over the past year, gave their time and energy to San Diego ASYMCA programs,
it once again became evident that we are able to serve over 6,000 individuals each month due to
the dedication, caring, and energy of, not only our staff, but of our tireless volunteers. We
appreciate Rear Admiral Bachman, Commander, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command
(SPAWAR), taking time out from his busy schedule to address the volunteers. His remarks
recognized the important contributions our volunteers make to enhance the lives of military families.
We thank and appreciate all our valuable volunteers!
Additionally, the San Diego community stepped forward and showed our military families they
care. The 3rd Annual Military Appreciation Day at the Stan Humphries Celebrity Golf Tournament
was enjoyed by hundreds of individuals from the local military community. The entertainment
highlight was Brigadier General Angela Salinas, Commanding General of Marine Corps Recruit Depot,
showing everyone the real way to do the “Chicken Dance.” Well done General!
April also highlighted the importance of staying healthy. Even the extreme heat did not deter
military families from participating in our 3rd Annual “Healthy Kids Day,” where families could share
an afternoon of fitness events and healthy food. Similarly, our Walking Group celebrated Earth Day
in Balboa Park and our military volunteers assisted at the Special Olympics. Remember, you can
accomplish so much by maintaining a healthy lifestyle – take the time to stay fit, both physically and
mentally!
Keep Chargin!
Paul
