Here are The Chronicle's picks for nightclub

happenings this weekend. Compiled by Andrew Gilbert,
Justin Gillett, L.C. Mason and Mosi Reeves.

Sonata arctica

Tonight @ Slim's: The word "epic" only begins to describe the music of Sonata Arctica. This long-tressed
band of head bangers from Finland tout power metal tales of pure fantasy like a beacon of light in the
midst of the genre's usually sinister overtones. An armada of soloing guitars and World of Warcraft themes
are the stars of the band's latest, "The Days of Grays." Catching them live is akin to being among "Lord of
the Rings" fans having a night on the town while having your insides churned by the band's pounding
double-bass drums. 8 p.m., $21-$23, 6+. 333 11th St., S.F. (415) 255-0333. www. slims-sf.com. (L.M.)

The tenderlions

Tonight @ the Independent: By using a live drum set to add syncopated rhythms to hard-edged electronic
music, the S.F. duo Tenderlions create a methodic style of club music that's well suited to this city's grime-
friendly electro scene. Though the sound is aggressive, attuned listeners can discern crafty production and
adept electronic composition out of the overwhelming noise. With an affinity for adding choppy and
glitched-out vocals into the musical mix, the duo blends some innate humanistic elements into the slightly
mechanized music. 9 p.m., $16, 21+. 628 Divisadero St., S.F. (415) 771-1421. www.theindependentsf.com.

Bonobo

Friday @ Mezzanine: English producer Simon "Bonobo" Green has crafted down-tempo music since
2000's excellent "Animal Magic." Far from an electronic beatmaker, he utilizes various musicians and
vocalists, creating sounds akin to the brassy, orchestral pop of the early '60s. He'll perform with a live
band Friday in support of his new album, "Black Sands." Look out for Andreya Triana, the torchy vocalist
who burns brightly on Bonobo's latest single, "The Keeper." 9 p.m., $25 advance, 21+. 444 Jessie St., S.F.
(415) 625-8880. www.mezzaninesf.com. (M.R.)

Ana moura

Saturday @ Palace of the Fine Arts Theatre: After decades as a moribund art form associated with
reactionary politics, the soul-bearing Portuguese style known as fado is undergoing a thrilling renaissance,
sparked by a new generation of female vocalists like Misia, Dulce Pontes and Mariza. Ana Moura is one of
the youngest and most charismatic singers in the new wave, a sultry performer who has charmed fado's
old standard-bearers while winning an international coterie of fans (including Mick Jagger and Prince). 8
p.m., $25-$55, all ages. 3301 Lyon St., S.F. (866) 920-5299. www.sfjazz.org. (A.G.)
