TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL
NEWSLETTER Tel. 01829 733496
Unchecked developments could
threaten rural way of life
LAST month’s Parish Council meeting (12th March) was dominated by planning issues, namely
the two applications put forward by GB Developments for the land off Heatherways and the
auction of the fields off Utkinton Road (April 21st at the Swan Hotel). Both illustrate the pressure
for development in and around Tarporley, which if not controlled could threaten the rural nature of
our village which we know and love.

Tell us your issues and concerns

The Parish Council will host the Annual Parish Meeting on Monday 10th May at 7pm which will
take place prior to the Annual Parish Council meeting, both at Tarporley Community Centre, High
Street. You will be most welcome, so please come along to hear our reports of the work we have
undertaken on your behalf during the year. Also this meeting will give you the chance to tell us
about your issues and concerns. The Agendas are on the Parish Notice board, in front of the
“new” shops and bus stop. After a number of emails, you’ll be pleased to see that the seats for
that bus stop have finally been installed.

Walks recommended
Now the weather has improved, can I recommend to you many of the footpath walks around
the village. Details are on the notice board at the side of the Rising Sun and maps are available
across the road at Swaffields.

Watch your speed

By the time you read this, the Speed Indicator Device (SID) project will have been completed.
I hope the device didn’t indicate that you were exceeding the speed limit in the village. Please
help to make our local roads safer. Also by the time you read this the judges from the Best Kept
Village Competition may or may not have visited us. (Judging is any time from mid-April to the
end of August). All efforts to reduce litter, dog fouling, graffiti and stop children picking the flowers
in the displays and on the road verges, are greatly appreciated. This year, as last, we have also
entered into the Cheshire Community Spirit Award. We are hoping to beat last year’s award of
2nd place.

New Tarporley Youth Club takes off

The new club meets 7 - 9pm each Monday in the Craven Room in Tarporley Community Centre
and its popularity is increasing. All 12 to 17 year olds from Tarporley and surrounding districts are
welcome. Grants recently received ensure the club’s medium term future. However, the club has
had no response to repeated requests for volunteers to come forward to assist on the Monday
club night or to help the management committee. If you can afford a couple of hours of your time
(maybe not every week) please support this important facility for the young people of Tarporley
and telephone Gemma on 07901 557 597 or e-mail gemmagerrish@gmail.com. You never know
- you may find that you enjoy it!

THE second Sandstone Run, which took place last month, has been judged a
big success. The 10k race attracted 246 runners, well up from last year, and
the organisers hope to have raised well over £2,000 for the NSPCC. The winner
was Mike Hatton from South Cheshire Harriers, who completed the hilly cross
country course around Beeston and Peckforton in an impressive 38mins 44secs.

Pupils enjoy big dig fun

ARCHAEOLOGY is being brought to life for children visiting the Sandstone Ridge.
A mock archaeological dig has been created within the grounds of Burwardsley Outdoor
Education Centre which is sited close to Beeston Castle and Maiden Castle, both of which
have remains of Iron Age hillforts.
Based on the remains of an Iron Age
roundhouse, the dig will provide a real ‘time
team’ experience for children to be able to
excavate the remains and record any finds that
they may unearth.
Habitats and Hillforts funding has enabled a
new member of staff to join the Outdoor Service
Team and Martin Kirkman will be working at the
centre to deliver this new initiative.
He said: “This exciting new resource offers
schools in Cheshire a fantastic opportunity to
use the environment of the Sandstone Ridge
in conjunction with the archaeological dig
to provide a Cross Curricular Skills – based
teaching approach to sessions at the Burwardsley Centre covering many subjects.”
Children will be unearthing the remains using buckets and trowels, and once artefacts have
been revealed they will have the opportunity to identify and compare them to the real thing.
Ellie Soper, Project Manager for the Scheme said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for
schools across Cheshire to become involved, helping to bring archaeology alive’

Campaigners switched on
for wildlife fund raiser
WWF’s Earth Hour took place at 8.30pm on Saturday, 27th March, a now-global call to
highlight awareness of climate change. World landmarks such as the Las Vegas Strip,
The Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera House, and UK landmarks including Buckingham
Palace and 10 Downing Street, joined in the campaign to encourage communities to
‘switch off’ for one hour. In total, all seven continents, 125 countries, and more than 4,000
cities and towns took part in the event.
Closer to home, a group of local Nia teachers staged a Nia-Jam Dance Event, attended
by dancers from all over the North West region. Dressed as wild animal in the spirit of the
campaign, they danced a routine called ‘Earth Song’. With entry fees, a raffle and face
painting, the event, which was held at Tilston Memorial Hall, raised £441.
Local businesses and education centres sponsoring the event included Rookery Hall Spa,
Healing Thyme, Combermere Abbey, The Studio in Tattenhall and The Design Office,
Crewe.
Nia is a blend of nine movement forms incorporating the essence of dance, martial and
healing arts. (www.nianow.com)

High fliers: A TATTENHALL-based aviation training company is celebrating again after
it was ‘Highly Commended’ at the High Sheriff’s Award for Enterprise. Global Air Training
received the accreditation following the award ceremony at the University of Chester.
Dianne Worby the director of the business, based in Worley Court, said: “We are proud
to be recognised for our achievements and despite the global economic slowdown we had
an incredible year in 2009, with the continued success and expansion of our business, the
opening of a new building and winning the Royal Mail Small Business of the Year Award, at
the Cheshire Business Awards”
“Our company offers courses to delegates from across the globe and Tattenhall provides a
great base for our training, offering accessibility to the major airports and transport links, and
at the same time providing the tranquil environment required for training purposes. The local
community is integral to the success of our company and when possible we always use
local businesses as our suppliers.”

Farm marches on: A farm near Tarporley can look forward to expanding its business -
thanks to a recent £24,000 grant.
Tiresford Farm, near Tarporley, successfully applied for a grant from the Northern Marches

people working in the farming and forestry sector to add value to their products, and to
stimulate developments which will help meet the needs of both producers and consumers.”

Christian centre plan: THE Storehouse Church has approached the borough council
with a view to taking over ownership of its current home, the site of the former Brook Farm
Special School.
In 2006 the Storehouse Church became the sole tenants and undertook an extensive
restoration project in order to return the buildings and facilities, which had been
considerably vandalised, to an asset providing public benefit. These extensive facilities are
now staffed, operated and maintained by members of the church who donate their time and
money voluntarily.
The Storehouse Church want to develop the site as a Christian Worship Centre and
Community Hub. It would be a self-supporting, not for profit, facility with nine housing units
and five full time jobs.

A. The only permanent method of hair removal is electrolysis of
which there are several types: short wave diathermy, galvanic
electrolysis (no longer used) and the Blend method, which
combines the first two methods. However, the effectiveness

be truly effective. It is most suited to smaller areas

Laser and IPL (intense pulsed light) are better
described as ‘long term hair management systems’
and so are not permanent but can offer an

The two wins in April were against New Mills Reserves, which was won by a 3-2 score

promotion this Season, and that aim is still within our grasp, although the run-in is extremely
difficult with the four games remaining all being away games.
Tarporley Vics Reserves became the only team to beat MMU FC this season and they also
gained a good draw against Malpas Reserves. A defeat to Curshaws has left the Vics in
a comfortable mid table position in their 1st Season of the Crewe Premier Division with a
