Dear friends.

Our own men will be supplying for me.

The News Flash we wrote to the churches about the Inoues' baptism was just a'

details are needed. He is 62 years old and stands 6 feet tall.

He was reared in a Christian

sultant, civil engineer hired by the government for express highway construction.
He recently
returned from leading Japan's second survey team to Zaire, Africa on a project for the U.N.

to consider possibilities of building an expressway across Central Africa. He was so impressed

by the pioneer spirit of the missionaries he saw working right at the edge of the jungle there.

the Lord's guidance as to their place of service in Japan maj' be clearly made known.
We want to share some important factors about our building.

1.

Pray

After its $1700 debt

is

repaid the church itself will have provided 72?^ of the total $9000 building cost. 2. The local
Christians contributed as much during this year of building ($2300) as they were able to save
ever the past six years.

3 The church continued as before to provide for others by contribut

ing 1"^ of their 197^ income to missions.

Even with a building debt to repay,

they decided

to give over half the Special Christmas Offering to missions, "As thanksgiving to God for His
blessings to us thru the building program".
Churches and Christians in Japan likewise help

ed tremendously by providing $1100.

6. The group so much appreciates the pews provided by you

Stateside Christians at a cost of $1000 and $300 in additional help.

Its wonderful that the National Missionary Convention brought its

fellowship and instruc-

tion right into Cincinnati where Mark and Lynn are ms^ng plans to come to Japan. They have set

^ early August as their deadline for sailing. They will work under Central Japan Christian Mis

sion and plan to live here at Isehara during their period of language study. This school year,
Lynn has been studying Japanese at the Univ. of Cincinnati- THOSE OF YOU WHO WISH FOR THEM AND

DAUGHTER KAEIS TO VISIT YOUR CHURCH, PLEASE WRITE MARK PRATT, 96O GRAND AVE, APT. 8, CINCINNATI,

There are 6,000,000

in Kanagawa Ken with only three Churches of Christ.

V be the second missionary and Hideto Yoshii will be the second preacher. So we are already set.sights, .elsewhere for beginning new works. Oh, the need is great!

Dear friends,

Let us nasp^^ri'Bute, to Polly and Ernie Wilkinson, who,

for the

as Forwaifdihg-Agents-"f6r us without pay.
Many may have similar abilities, but few are so gener

these

two have been.

A beautiful friendship began

when Kathleen and I

began working

with the Milburn

Church in Mishawaka, Indiana. Polly and Ernie were serving

with the Linden Ave. Church in nearby South Bend. Without
children of their own, they have taught and lead countless

boys and girls to Christ through their

labors there and at

the West Side Church. Indirectly they have had a real part
in begetting spiritual children in far off Japan.

Let me just list a few of the duties of the Forwarding

Agent. They served as go-be-tween for our family and our

sponsoring churches. Cash gifts, letters, sometimes arti1

At their

an enthusiastic appeal in our behalf. Many who heard their program have been surprised to learn
that they have never visited Japan. We hope they will be able to some day.
WE ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO GIVE THAT GREAT "WELL DONE" BUT

A PROGRESS REPORT FROM MARK AND LYNN PRATT

Where We've Been - Since the first of the year we've visited the following churches;

Western

Hills Church, Montgomery Road Church, and Highview Christian Church in Cincinnati, ^hio; HiPoint Church, Bellefontaine, Ohio; and Central Christian Church, Carmel, Indiana.

We also visited Hideto Yoshii (our future co-worker, we hope) at Ball State
in Muncie, Indiana.

Unilrersity

These visits make a total of approximately 85O miles traveled.

Where We're Going- Our ultimate ^stination is Japan and plane tickets have been reserved for
August 23, 1973. In the meantime we have some other speaking engagements setup with ^chui^
ches who are considering regular support for the C.J.C.M. Campus Ministry.

This month (March) we plan to attend the annual Campus Ministers' Retreat in St. Louis,
Mo.

We'll be looking for a lot of ideas and advice there.

Our Biggest. Needs- (1) Prayer. It's a temptation to put money as the first need. But we know
that if Christian friends are sincerely praying for this work, the financial part will take
care of itself. We have seen the power of prayer at work for C.J.C.M. in the past. We seek
your prayers for this new area of the work.

(2) Regular Monthly Support. The money shown on this little financial sum
mary is supposed to be building up to take care of our travel expenses. But, as you can see
we have to dip into it quite often for other needs as well. Still, we feel_o_ur travel fund
money is going to come in. We have approximately 1/3 of our regular support promised as of

March 2nd. If your church would be interested'in a program, contact us at: 9^0 Grand, Apt.8,
Cincinnati, Ohio, ^3203

Our phone number is (313) 231-3779

~~

Our Thanks We want to thank in advance Mark's aunt, Mary Lou Bauer, who will be taking
over the forwarding agent's Job for the whole mission. This will be a big Job. We've spent
a lot of time talking with her, trying to anticipate problems and difficult situations that
may come up.

We also want to thank Karis' Grandma and Grandpa Lusby. We count on them to keep Karis
for us when we have particularly long trips. They will be keeping her when we go to the Cam
pus Minister's Retreat and when we go to camp for one week this summer.

"Come unto me all ye that labor..."

Dear friends,

Mary-Lou and Karry-were thrilled to be able zo participat"e in our v/eek-end revival meeting.
We had a total of 250 persons in four services and ten students decided to study toward becoming
Christians.

Fray that communist teachers cannot disuade them.

Since that time three persons have accepted Christ and been baptized. Ken and Yumi (boy &

girlfriend) made their decisions at about 11:00PM and after a prayer service they were bapti
zed just about midnight. Consultation with her mother revealed a genuine interest in Christ.
In 1970, Akihito'" ^.ed with the Ohio Singers against God at Kagoshima. In 1972, single-

handed, he sponsored

In May I_ spoke to the Isehara Rotary Club jmd in June to the Lions Club. Tliey requested
remarks about varying customs and gave me freedom to testify of my faith.
In May, Kathleen and I had the experience of a memorial service for Mr. Inoue's parents and

brothers. The family ashes were being moved from Omihachiman to a new cemetary at Mt. Fuji.
Our Missionary Convention followed the All-Japan Convention and developed the illustration
of Jesus, "Except a grain of wheat..die, it abides alone." "Are we prepared to die?" "Rather,
are v;e prepared for the even more difficult task of

living daily

for Christ?"

"Like Paul, do

we really 'die daily'?" Recently, in Viet Nam, seven missionaries were persecuted unto death.

Dear friends,

What a busy but joyous summer!

It began with Mary's return home in June and was capped by

praise the Lord who does all things well.

Mary scheduled English Classes thru the summer,

was lifeguard at Motosu Camp and received

six college credits by attending the Summer Session at Sophia University. Barbara Roth, Mary's
room mate spent three months with us, too, teaching English and assisting as pianist in the
church. Most people comment about the natural beauties of Japan.
But what impressed Barb was
"the Joy and boldness of the Christians I met, who shine as lights in their world". This is

testimony to the growth of Christians in the two churches.

A total of 20 persons represented
Zushi and Sannobara at Motosu Christian Camp. Sannobara also sponsored two different
musical
programs during the summer and a three day home-force rally in August.
Mark & Hideto preached,

As of this writing the church has repaid over half of their $1700 building debt since Jan. 1st.
Four persons have been baptized since our last Epistle, and recent converts are faithful.
Yuichi Nakagawa. our gxiitarist, accompanied us to Karuizawa to help ShimoOchiai Christians
in a coffee-house type of evangelism. Two persons were actually baptized but as a result of
personal evangelism many went away relieved of doubts and misunderstandings about Christianity.
Some of the problems are as follows: "Why is there suffering in the world?" "Isn't there qiite
a contradiction between the Bible and science?" "If I become a Christian, what difference

It make in my daily life?" "Aren't all religions striving for the same thing?" "If
the Bible in English, will I be better able to use English conversation?"

Dear friendr,

We didn't know whether we would buy,

rent, or whatwhen it came time to locate the campus minis

try. In fact, we even wondered if there would be anything available at a reasonable price, since
Obirin College is right inside Tokyo proper. And now we have found what we think would be an ideal

place to build. It's just two blocks from Obirin and is in a fast-growing community, on a nicely
paved boulevard with water and electricity.
Our plan is to buy this land, then build a two-story buildingone floor for Mark and Lynn's home
and the other floor for the campus house. With our recent experience building the church here, we are
confident that we can do much of the building ourselves at a minimum cost.
Through a campus ministry we will be able to reach 5,000 youth from all over this country and even
a few from other countries. It's our prayer that as they graduate and scatter to other parts of the
country and the world, they will be able to take the Good News that they have heard with them.
In this letter we want you to sense how anxious we are to begin. And we hope that you can antici

pate the challenge and excitement along with usl
