He is one of the popular, if not the most popular, city mayor in the country today. Mayor
Duterte was born on March 28, 1945 in Maasin, Southern Leyte. His father served as the
Governor of Davao while his mother was a school teacher. He studied at Sta. Ana
Elementary School in Davao and then spent his high school at Holy Cross of Digos. After
earning his high school diploma, he studied in Lyceum of the Philippines for his
tertiary education, and later on continued studying law in San Beda College. He passed the
bar exam shortly after. As early as 1986, Mayor Duterte has been active in the political area
as he served as the appointed vice mayor/officer in charge of the city following the People Power Revolution.
He then designated deputy mayors who represented Moro and Lumad, which were later on replicated in other
areas of the Philippines. He has served as a Congressman, ran as mayor, vice mayor, and mayor again. He was
never out of politics.Mayor Duterte has won several awards including the National Literacy Hall of Fame for
bagging the awards on Outstanding Local Government Highly Urbanized category for three times. Davao
City is known nationwide because of its peace and order. This is mainly due to the rules imposed by the City
Council members that were fully supported by Mayor Duterte. Among those rules are the liquor ban in the
city from 1:00am to 8:00am; requiring commercial establishments to set up CCTV cameras; and strict speed
limits to vehicles within Davao City. The Davao City Mayor also landed on headlines for leading the citys
humanitarian efforts. After the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yolanda, Davao City was among the first local
government units that responded. There are several reasons to love or hate this Mayor of Davao City. But
the imposition of strict rules in his jurisdiction undeniably improved peace and order and public safety.
He is a Filipino lawyer and politician of Visayan descent. Duterte is among the longest-serving
mayors in the Philippines and has been mayor of Davao City, a highly urbanized city on Mindanao island, for
7 terms, totalling more than 22 years. He has also served as vice-mayor and congressman in the city.
On November 21, 2015, Duterte declared his candidacy for President of the Philippines in the upcoming 2016
election after a period of banter. As early as the first quarter of 2015, Duterte made hints to the media of his
intention to run for president in the 2016 elections. However, he denied these plans numerous times amidst
clamor from his supporters for him to run. On October 16, 2015, on the last day of filing for certificates of
candidacy, Martin Dio filed his intent to run for president under Duterte's party, PDP-Laban. Duterte's
supporters clamored for the possibility that Duterte be fielded as a substitute candidate for Dio, in the event
that Dio gets disqualified or withdrew. On October 26, 2015, Duterte said on an interview that the deadline
for his last decision if he will seek the presidency is on December 10. He also warned the people to abide by
the law if he wins. On October 27, PDP-Laban has made it official that Duterte will substitute as the party's
presidential bet if aspirant Martin Dio withdraws or is disqualified by the Commission of Elections
(Comelec) from the 2016 race. Two days later, PDP-Laban standard bearer Martin Dio officially withdrew
his presidential bid and named Duterte as his substitute because theres a possibility that Dio might be
declared as a nuisance candidate by the COMELEC.
On November 21 in a private gathering with fraternity brothers from San Beda College of Law,
Duterte formally announced his presidential bid and also finally accepted Alan Peter Cayetano's offer to be his
running mate. On November 27, 2015, Duterte filed his certificate of candidacy for president through his
representative Atty. Salvador Medialdea in Metro Manila shortly after withdrawing his COC for Davao City
mayoralty re-election. On December 17, Comelec officially recognized
Dutertes substitution of Martin Dio as PDP-Labans presidential
candidate for the May 2016 elections.

She initially studied at the University of the Philippines Manila, where she majored in development
studies, but moved to Boston College in Massachusetts, United States where she finished a degree
in political science and has spent much of her adult life inFairfax, Virginia.

learning that her father had died. She began pursuing her father's rights over the results of the election
and campaigned against alleged electoral fraud.

the Team PNoy coalition of Aquino. She ended up winning more votes than other candidates and over
