Gary Gallik, Honorary Alumnus Award
Gary graduated from Thomas Kelly High School in 1973 and attended Wright
Junior College and Illinois State University. He went on to work for the Chicago
Park District for 32 years from which he retired as a Supervisor. Gary has been
married to his wife Diane for 26 years and together have three children. His
daughter Kathryn graduated from McAuley in 2005 and the University of Wis-
consin in 2009. Gary’s sons Michael and Robert both attended St. Rita. Michael
graduated in 2006 and went on to the University of Iowa and Robert will graduate
in May and attend Illinois Wesleyan University in the fall. In recent years, Gary
has been very active as a St. Rita parent. He co-chaired the Sports Bar Room for
the first Winterfest and chaired the second Winterfest in 2006. Gary has also act-
ed as a Pasta Dad, Parent Ambassador, Open House Greeter, and has opened his
home to host information sessions for parents of prospective St. Rita students.

Thomas Hopkins, Honorary Alumnus Award

Tom attended grammar school at St. Sabina and Queen of Martyrs and graduated
from Leo High School in 1973 where he played basketball. After high school
he joined the Plumber’s Union Local 130 and went on to co-own J.P. Hopkins
Sewer Co. with his two brothers. In 1984 Tom married Margie. They have four
children, Tom, Martin, Liam, and Anne. His three sons all attended St. Rita. Tom
graduated in 2007 and attends Trine University, Martin graduated in 2009 and
attends the University of Iowa, and Liam is a currently a junior. Anne is a fresh-
man at McAuley. Tom has been committed to helping youth throughout his life.
He was a IHSA baskeball referee for 25 years and coached CYO basketball. He
is a parishioner of St. Cajetan where he has been a member of the school board,
athletic board, and also a football coordinator. Tom has been a loyal St. Rita sup-
porter ever since his brother-in-laws attended St. Rita in the early 1980s. He is
a member of the Fathers’ Club, has been part of the Lacrosse Booster Club since
it began, and co-chaired rooms for the first and second Winterfests. Tom is not
only dedicated to the success of his own children but has been a true role model
offering assistance to countless neighborhood children and St. Rita students over
the years.

Fr. Bill McFarlane, Honorary Alumnus Award

Fr. Bill graduated from St. Gabriel Grammar School in 1979 and attended Leo
High School. At Leo, Fr. Bill was President of his class sophomore, junior, and
senior year and was manager/trainer for the football team. After graduating from
Leo, Fr. Bill worked in various fields for a variety of businesses including security
at Soldier Field and the City of Chicago’s Office of Emergency Communications.
Fr. Bill was ordained to the priesthood on May 21, 2005 and since has been as-
signed to St. George Parish in Tinley Park and St. Catherine of Alexandria in
Oak Lawn. Fr. Bill is proud to be associated with St. Rita and shows his dedica-
tion through his involvement in Campus Ministry, assisting with school liturgies,
reconciliation services, and Kairos retreats. He also attends every football game
and other athletic and school events supporting St. Rita students and capturing
memorable moments through his photography.
Tim Dydo, 1970, Athletic Award
After graduating from St. Rita Tim entered Xavier University in Cincinnati on an
athletic scholarship. He was the starting quarterback for 2 1/2 years. He was the
fourth leading passer in the nation in 1973 and was named Honorable Mention
All-American. In 1992, Tim was inducted into the Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame.
Upon graduation from Xavier in 1974, he married his high school sweetheart
Lynn. They will celebrated their 36th Anniversary this May and have three chil-
dren and one grandchild. Tim has held various accounting, financial, and gen-
eral management positions. He earned his MBA from the University of Toledo
in 1982. In 1988, he became the Vice President of Finance and later President
for the largest educational video producer in the world. In 1994, he co-founded
a company specializing in the production and distribution of business training
videos. Tim currently resides in Libertyville and is a representative for Country
Financial. He has also been an assistant varsity football coach for Vernon Hills
High School since 1995.

John Egan, 1960, Athletic Award

John was a four year starting basketball player at St. Rita. He started on junior
varsity his freshman year, senior varsity his sophomore year, junior and senior
varsity his junior year, and senior varsity his senior year. John has had many ath-
letic achievements during his lifetime. He once scored 29 points left handed in a
varsity game against St. Patrick because of a broken right arm. John earned All-
Catholic and All-State Honors at St. Rita. He was part of the NCAA Champions
in 1963 and received U.P.I. All-American Honors at Loyola University in 1964.
John was inducted into the Loyola Hall of Fame in 1970, St. Rita Hall of Fame
in 1984, Catholic League Hall of Fame in 1986, Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame
in 1994, and the Chicago Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. He also received the St.
Rita Outstanding Achievement Award from the Alumni Association in 1997, was
the Men of Tolentine “Man of the Year” in 1993, and earned a Lifetime Achieve-
ment Award from Loyola in 2006. John has been an attorney since 1967, first as
a assistant state’s attorney and then a criminal defense attorney. He is married
to his wife Mary, is father to Bridgette, Kate, John, Ryan, and Shannon, and is
grandfather to Ella, Jack, and Benjamin.

John Flanagan, 1985, Athletic Award

The youngest of five, John attended St. Symphorosa Grammar School and played
youth baseball in the Clear Ridge Little League. He then came to attend St. Rita
like his older brothers Tim ’73 and Patrick ’75. John was a four year member of
the football and baseball teams. He was part of the baseball team that traveled
in 1985 to Louisville, KY and steamrolled everyone and earned a Top 5 National
ranking. John had the privilege of playing in Coach Pat Cronin’s last game at St.
Rita Stadium and contributed in the victory with a key interception and a punt re-
turn for a touchdown. He went on to attend the University of Notre Dame where
he played baseball for four years and earned a degree in finance. John remained
at Notre Dame as an assistant baseball coach for two years. In his two seasons
on the coaching staff, Notre Dame went 91-28 and rose to National prominence,
being recognized by Baseball America as “College Baseball’s Fastest Rising Pro-
gram.” John left Notre Dame in 1992 to begin C.F. Swingtown Baseball Acad-
emy, Inc. in Orland Park with Ron Coomer. After 15 years, John sold Swingtown
and established Flanagan Consulting and moved to Tempe, AZ. He then recon-
nected with former Notre Dame coach Pat Murphy to work with Arizona State
University Baseball and Murphy’s All Nine Baseball Academy. John and his wife
Sami currently live in Tempe with their two sons Lucas (5) and Hagan (4).

Jack Griffin, 1960, Athletic Award

Jack was St. Rita’s starting halfback playing for legendary Coach Ed Buckley. He
was also a member of the track and field team as a sprinter. Jack earned a foot-
ball scholarship to attend college at Ball State University. He went on to marry
his high school sweetheart Penny and has been married to her for 47 years. Jack
has four daughters, Maureen, Cathy, Laura, and Susanne and nine grandchildren.
He coached grade school football for 25 years and retired from a dry cleaning
business after 22 years where his partner was Tom Minogue ’76. Jack currently
resides in Orland Park.

Jimmy Johnson, 1985, Athletic Award

Jimmy was team captain for both St. Rita football and basketball. As the varsity
quarterback he was named All-Catholic League. Jimmy was also Vice President
for his senior class. He went on to attend Loras College where he spent three
years as starting quarterback and was two-time All Conference Iowa Conference.
Jimmy then coached one season at Loras, two seasons at Lakeland College, and
six seasons at St. Xavier University. He has worked for the Chicago Police De-
partment for 12 years and has been married to his wife Theresa for 18 years.
Jimmy also has four children, Jimmy, John, Molly, and Meghan. His son Jimmy
is a current St. Rita junior and John is a sophomore.

Jeff Prestinario, 1970, Athletic Award

As a St. Rita sophomore Jeff was a starter on the lightweights basketball team
but eventually moved up to start on the heavyweights. During his junior and se-
nior years, he played with both the lightweights and heavyweights until the start
of league season when he competed as a heavyweight. As a junior, he was the
MVP of the 1968 Fenwick Lightweight Christmas Tournament and a pre-league
member of the Catholic League Lightweight Championship team. During his
junior year, he was the heavyweights’ starting point guard, and in his senior year
averaged 18 points per game, was team captain and MVP, and was elected to
the All-Catholic Team. Jeff went on to graduate from Lewis University in 1974
where he was a member of the Flyers Basketball Team. He then spent many years
teaching and coaching basketball at St. Laurence. Currently, Jeff is the owner of
Presto Marketing Inc. and is in his third term as an Alderman for the City of Palos
Heights. He has been married to his wife Pam for 32 years and has 3 daughters,
Andrea, Michelle, and Julie.

Coach Don L. Russell, Athletic Award

Don graduated from Tilden Tech in 1948 and went on to attend Western Michi-
gan University from 1948-1949 where he played football. In 1949, he joined
the United States Army and fought in the Korean Conflict. Don was awarded
the Bronze Star, Combat Medical Award and South Korea gave him the Korea
Combat Medallion. He returned in 1951 to find employment with Holsum Bread,
where he worked until his retirement in 1991. During his lifetime, Don has left
a huge impact on St. Rita Athletics. In 1959, Don helped build a home baseball
field for St. Rita at 51st and Kedzie, which was used for many years, and led St.
Rita to its first title in the Catholic League with a win over Fenwick at Comiskey
Park. Don also coached football at St. Rita Grammar School and helped to recruit
players for Coach Ed Buckley’s National Championship team. Until he left St.
Rita in 1961 he ran many fundraisers and donated his time, loyalty, and love. In
1961, Don married his wife Beverly Ann and they had two sons that both attended
St. Rita. His son Donald graduated in 1980 and Kevin graduated in 1981. He was
a member of the Fathers’ Club and assisted with baseball fundraising. Don also
spent many years dedicating his time to youth athletics in Stickney and currently
drives a bus for handicapped children.

Ron Abramowicz, 1960, Loyalty Award

After graduating from St. Rita Ron was a Reserve for the United States Marine
Corp. from 1963-1969. He also attended DePaul University graduating in 1969
and later received his MBA from the Keller Graduate School of Management in
1979. Ron spent 30 years in sales and marketing with Wallace Computer Ser-
vices. He was a member of the St. Rita Board of Advisors for over 20 years and
served as the Chairman from 2001-2005. In 2002, Ron was the Men of Tolentine
“Man of the Year,” and in 2004 he was inducted into the St. Rita Hall of Fame.
Ron is currently a business consultant. He has been married to his wife Cheryl
for 43 years and they have two sons, Michael (Melissa) and Scott (Christa). Ron
is also the proud grandfather of five, Jake (12), Josh (10), Ethan (7), Kayla (4),
and Scarlett (2).

Don Allelujka, 1970, Loyalty Award

Don entered Egan Hall as a Ritaman for the first time in September of 1966 and
says that while he graduated in 1970 St. Rita has never left him. He owes many of
his significant life experiences to St. Rita. On a co-ed retreat that he was sent on
by Fr. Corrigan and the chaplains, Don met his wife Barb who was on the retreat
with Queen of Peace. Don and Barb have been married for 35 years. They have
a son Steve and recently welcomed their daughter-in-law Melissa into the family.
Don attended Northern Illinois University and received a B.A. in Political Sci-
ence from Loyola University of Chicago. He has had a 35 year career in federal
public service holding positions with the Social Security Administration, the Fed-
eral Bankruptcy Court, and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Don and
his wife Barb currently have residences in Oak Park and Galena.

John Flaherty, 1970, Loyalty Award

While at St. Rita, John was a member of the National Honor Society and was on
the 1970 Chicago Catholic League Lightweight Championship Basketball team.
He went on to attend Lewis University to receive a B.A. with honors in Econom-
ics. John wrestled for four years at Lewis and was the team captain. He was
inducted into Lewis’ Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988. John then earned a Masters
degree in Taxation from DePaul University in 1977 and became a Certified Public
Account that same year. He spent 13 years working for the big four tax firms of
Ernst & Whinney and Coopers & Lybrand, rising to Tax-Partner-In-Charge of the
C&L Tax Department from 1985-1990. Upon resigning from C&L in 1990, John
started John K. Flaherty & Associates, Ltd. and remains the CEO. John married
his wife Kathy in 1976, seven years after taking her to the St. Rita Senior Prom.
They have four sons, John, Bill, Kevin, and Michael, all who attended Fenwick
and the University of Illinois and the University of Iowa. He is a 25 year resident
of Riverside and St. Mary’s Parish. John was also an original member of the Pat
Cronin Golf Outing Committee and is a current member of Lewis’ Estate and Tax
Planning Advisory Council.

Tim McCarthy, 1985, Loyalty Award

Tim and his three brothers attended St. Rita. His brother Joe graduated in 1984
and Marty graduated in 1997. His father is an honorary alumnus. After graduat-
ing from St. Rita, Tim studied at the University of Illinois where he earned his
Bachelors of Fine Arts in Painting in 1989. His first teacher, however, was his
mother who was an artist. Tim went to work for an art gallery in downtown
Chicago and from this experience realized his focus should be on selling his own
artwork. Within months, Tim began doing freelance artwork for the Southtown
Economist and The Beverly Review as well as continuing to produce his unique
portraits. Tim also held several professional positions at St. Rita as the Director
of Public Relations, Assistant Director of Development, and Activities Director.
He was the Head Soccer Coach from 1990-1995. In 1995, he ventured full-time
into freelance work and in 2004 opened McCarthy Fine Arts, “Our Day Gallery,”
in Evergreen Park with his wife Sue. Tim and Sue live in the Beverly neighbor-
hood with their three children Timmy (12), Adam (10), and Lillian (8). Both
Timmy and Adam are future Ritamen. Tim is also currently a Chicago Firefighter
and the engineer on Engine 13 downtown.

Dan Carroll, Honorary Alumnus, Hall of Fame Inductee

Dan is one of the most decorated coaches in St. Rita history. During his 11-year
tenure as Head Wrestling Coach at St. Rita, he led the Mustangs to back-to-back
Class AA State Championships in 2003 and 2004, along with a State Runner-Up
finish in 2006, Third Place finishes in 2005 and 2007, and State Quarterfinals ap-
pearances in 2001 and 2008. Before retiring from wrestling at the conclusion of
the 2008 season, Dan coached over 80 Individual State Qualifiers, including 40
Individual State Placers and 10 Individual State Champions at St. Rita. He led
the Mustangs to Catholic League Championships in 2003, 2004, and 2006. He is
a four-time Lawless Award Winner as top coach in the Chicago Catholic League.
He was named Illinois “Coach of the Year” in 2003, and in March 2010 was
inducted into the IHSA Coach’s Hall of Fame. Dan was also inducted this year
into the Catholic League Hall of Fame. He has also served St. Rita as a physical
education teacher, bus driver, Head Bowling Coach, and as an assistant football,
golf, and track coach.

Stuart Dybek, 1959, Hall of Fame Inductee

Stuart is the author of three books of fiction: I Sailed with Magellan, The Coast of
Chicago, and Childhood and Other Neighborhoods. Stuart has also published two
collections of poetry: Streets In Their Own Ink and Brass Knuckles. His fiction,
poetry, and nonfiction have appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, The Atlantic
Poetry, Tin House, Granta, and many other magazines and have been widely
anthologized, including work in both Best American Fiction and Best American
Poetry. Among Stuart’s numerous awards are a MacArthur Prize, the Rea Award
for significant contribution to the short story form, Pen/Malamud Prize for distin-
guished achievement in short story, a Lannan Award, a Whiting Writers Award,
an award from the Academy of the Arts and Letters, several O.Henry Prizes, and
fellowships from the NEA and the Guggenheim Foundation. He is Distinguished
Writer in Residence at Northwestern University and a member of the permanent
faculty for Western Michigan University’s Prague Summer Program.

Lt. Patrick J. Harrington, 1963, Hall of Fame Inductee

Upon graduating from St. Rita, Patrick accepted a scholarship to Villanova Uni-
versity where he enrolled in the Naval ROTC program. After graduating from
Villanova in 1967, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marines.
In 1968 he began a tour of duty in Vietnam, and on May 1, 1968 Patrick died in
Vietnam at the Battle of Dong Ha. He made the ultimate sacrifice, dying for his
country. In 2002, Patrick was honored at Villanova for his dedication and ser-
vice to the Vietnam War, and in 2009 he was nominated for an Alumni Award at
Villanova by his classmate Admiral William Fallon, former Commander of the
United States Central Command. Today Patrick’s spirit lives on as many of his St.
Rita classmates meet regularly to celebrate his life, and they formed the Patrick J.
Harrington Scholarship Fund in his memory to help St. Rita families who are in
need of financial assistance.

Richard J. Josepher, 1989, Hall of Fame Inductee

Richie was one of the greatest hitters in St. Rita Baseball history. During his
career he set St. Rita records for hits, RBIs, and average while striking out only
four times combined in his three varsity seasons. Richie was named All-Catho-
lic League three times, Chicago Tribune “Player of the Week” three times, and
All-Area and All-State during his senior season. He was also named The New
World Catholic Newspaper “Player of the Year” during his senior season. He was
drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers at the conclusion of senior year at St. Rita
but opted to attend Purdue University instead. Richie finished his college career
at St. Joe’s in Rensslaer where he set the single season mark for batting average
hitting .429 in 1991. He signed a professional baseball contract with the New
York Yankees in 1993 and played two seasons in their organization. Currently, he
manages Time on Water Outdoors, a boat dealership and outdoor store in Spring
Valley, IL. Richie is married to his wife Lynn and they have two daughters, Ra-
chael (9) and Julia (8).

David A. Kamm, 1954, Hall of Fame Inductee

After graduating from St. Rita David received his undergraduate degree in electri-
cal engineering from the University of Illinois in 1958 and his MBA from Michi-
gan State University in 1962. David was a member of the group of scientists that
launched the first-ever satellite into space. That first launch received worldwide
acclaim, landing him and his group on the front page of every newspaper in the
country. After 12 years in engineering, David designed the Florida Stock Index
and received the only copyright ever granted by the United States Patent Office
for a stock index. In May of 1980, he began writing a weekly investment column
called “Take Stock in Florida” that eventually was printed in 10-15 newspapers
throughout the country. David has been featured in the Miami Herald, New York
Times, Florida Trend, Money, and Medical Economics magazines. He also be-
came a regular on Florida TV on the Nightly Business Report. Most recently,
David has been coordinating the initiation of clone programs at both the Univer-
sity of North Florida and Florida State University. David has been married to his
wife Joanie for 48 years and they have three sons, Bob, Eric, and Rex, and nine
grandchildren.
Dave Moritz, 1980, Hall of Fame Inductee
While at St. Rita, Dave lettered in football, basketball, and track. He was a mem-
ber of the 1978 State Championship Football Team as a junior and earned All-
Catholic League honors as a senior. Dave continued his football career at the
University of Iowa where he played for the legendary Coach Hayden Fry. He led
the Hawkeyes in receiving in both his junior and senior seasons. He ranks in the
Top 10 All-Time in Hawkeye history with 109 career receptions and 1912 career
yards. In his junior year at Iowa in 1982, he set the Peach Bowl record with 168
receiving yards in Iowa’s 28-22 win over Tennessee. Most recently, Dave has
been an assistant football coach at St. Rita for the past 15 years, spending time at
both the sophomore and varsity levels as a receivers coach. Along with his wife
Kathleen, in 2005 Dave began the Look UP campaign, a smoke detector aware-
ness program that is presently in most colleges and universities in Illinois.

Andrew Smialek, 2008, Hall of Fame Inductee

Andrew was a true inspiration to everyone in the St. Rita Family that had the
privilege of knowing him. Andrew epitomized what it was to be a true Ritaman.
The courage and determination that he showed throughout his short life was an
inspiration to us all. Andrew was diagnosed with cancer the summer prior to his
freshman year, but he never let it get in his way. He was an honors student at St.
Rita, ranking near the top of his graduating class. He was a member of the 2006
Football Team and the 2007 Prep Bowl Championship Team. Andrew continued
his education at DePaul University while serving in the Center for Campus Min-
istry at St. Rita until his death in November 2009. To those who knew him, his
memory will live in their hearts forever.

Donald A. Petkus, 1958, 2010 Man of the Year

Donald is one of St. Rita’s most generous alumni, benefactors, and friends. After
attending St. Rita he earned his B.S. degree from Marquette University and an
MBA from Northwestern University. Donald began his career with Common-
wealth Edison in 1962, eventually holding many leadership positions. Through-
out his distinguished career at ComEd and DAMP Associates, Inc. he has given
back to the community. Donald has been and continues to be involved in many
non-for-profit boards such as the Big Shoulders Fund. He has been a member
of St. Rita’s Board of Advisors and is a founder of the Annual Valentine Dinner
Dance. He currently focuses much of his attention on education. St. Rita recently
dedicated the Donald A. and Nancy Petkus Science Laboratories in honor of him
and his wife and their dedication to the to the field of science and St. Rita.
