Vocational/ Technical School- a higher-level learning institution that specializes in providing

students with the vocational education and technical skills they need in order to perform the tasks
of a particular job
Community College- a nonresidential junior college offering courses to people living in a
particular area
Liberal Arts University- academic subjects such as literature, philosophy, mathematics, and
social and physical sciences as distinct from professional and technical subject
Public- a school supported by public funds
Private- a school supported by a private organization or private individuals rather than by the
government.
Major- greater or more important
Minor-lesser in importance
FASFA-The free application for federal student aid is a form filled out by college or graduate
students who are eligible for government-sponsored financial aid.
EOF- state sponsored program available to students who have the will and desire to go to
college, but need additional academic and financial support
Grant - Federal Pell Grant- is money the government provides for students who need it to pay for
college
Institutional Grant- grants that do not come from the federal government

Merit-Based Grant- These awards are based on a student's academic, artistic, athletic or other
abilities, and often factor in an applicant's extracurricular activities and community service
record
Need-Based Grant- your family's financial resources, as measured by a formula established by
the federal government, are not sufficient to cover your educational costs
Loans:
Federal Perkins Loan- a need-based student loan offered by the U.S. Department of Education to
assist American college students in funding their post-secondary education
Inistitutional Loan- Loan or equity capital provided by a financial institution, instead of by one
or more individuals
PLUS Loan- loan offered to parents of students enrolled at least half time, or graduate and
professional students, at participating and eligible post-secondary institutions
Financial Aid- any grant or scholarship, loan, or paid employment offered to help a student meet
his/her college expenses
Prerequisite- a thing that is required as a prior condition for something else to happen or exist.
Degree Credits- ?
Undergraduate Degree- colloquial term for an academic degree taken by a person who has
completed undergraduate courses
Graduate Degree- with the general requirement that students must have earned a previous
undergraduate
Degree Types:

A.A- undergraduate academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges, technical
colleges, bachelor's degreegranting colleges, and universities upon completion of a course of
study usually lasting two years
A.A.S- undergraduate academic degree awarded by community colleges, junior colleges,
technical colleges, bachelor's degreegranting colleges, and universities upon completion of a
course of study usually lasting two years
B.A- in the liberal arts, usually awarded for studies in the social sciences or humanities a person
having this degree
