MakeinIndiaisaninitiativeoftheGovernmentofIndiatoencouragemultinational,aswellasdomestic,
companiestomanufacturetheirproductsinIndia.ItwaslaunchedbyPrimeMinisterNarendraModion25
September2014.[1]Indiawouldemerge,afterinitiationoftheprogrammein2015,asthetopdestination
globallyforforeigndirectinvestment,surpassingChinaaswellastheUnitedStates.[2][3][4]

bytheDepartmentofIndustrialPolicyandPromotionwhichwas
attendedbyPMModi,hiscabinetministersandchief
secretariesofstatesaswellasvariousindustryleaders.[5]

Overview[edit]
Themajorobjectivebehindtheinitiativeistofocusonjobcreationandskillenhancementin25sectorsof
theeconomy.[6]Theinitiativealsoaimsathighqualitystandardsandminimisingtheimpactonthe
environment.[7][8]TheinitiativehopestoattractcapitalandtechnologicalinvestmentinIndia.[6]
ThecampaignwasdesignedbyWieden+Kennedy.[9]
Undertheinitiative,brochuresonthe25sectorsandawebportalwerereleased.Beforethe
initiativewaslaunched,foreignequitycapsinvarioussectorshadbeenrelaxed.Theapplicationfor
licenceswasmadeavailableonlineandthevalidityoflicenceswasincreasedtothreeyears.
Variousothernormsandprocedureswerealsorelaxed.[10]
InAugust2014,theCabinetofIndiaallowed49%foreigndirectinvestment(FDI)inthedefencesector
and100%inrailwaysinfrastructure.Thedefencesectorpreviouslyallowed26%FDIandFDIwasnot
allowedinrailways.ThiswasinhopeofbringingdownthemilitaryimportsofIndia.Earlier,oneIndian
companywouldhaveheldthe51%stake,thiswaschangedsothatmultiplecompaniescouldholdthe
51%.[11]
BetweenSeptember2014andNovember2015,thegovernmentreceived1.20lakhcrore(US$18billion)
worthofproposalsfromcompaniesinterestedinmanufacturingelectronicsinIndia.[12]

withaninvestmentof5billion(US$74million).Amemorandumofunderstandingwassignedbetweenthe
SpiceGroupandtheGovernmentofUttarPradesh.[18]
InJanuary2015,HyunChilHong,thePresident&CEOofSamsungSouthAsia,metwithKalrajMishra,
UnionMinisterforMicro,SmallandMediumEnterprises(MSME),todiscussajointinitiativeunderwhich
10"MSMESamsungTechnicalSchools"willbeestablishedinIndia.[19]InFebruary,Samsungsaidthatwill
manufacturetheSamsungZ1initsplantinNoida.[20]
InFebruary2015,Hitachisaiditwascommittedtotheinitiative.Itsaidthatitwouldincreaseitsemployees
inIndiafrom10,000to13,000anditwouldtrytoincreaseitsrevenuesfromIndiafrom100billionin
2013to210billion.ItsaidthatanautocomponentplantwillbesetupinChennaiin2016.[21]
InFebruary2015,Huaweiopenedanewresearchanddevelopment(R&D)campusinBengaluru.Ithad
investedUS$170milliontoestablishtheresearchanddevelopmentcentre.[22][23]Itisalsointheprocess
ofsettingupaTelecomhardwaremanufacturingplantinChennai,theapprovalsofwhichhavebeen

InFebruary2015,XiaomibeganinitialtalkswiththeAndhraPradeshgovernmenttobeginmanufacturing
smartphonesataFoxconnrunfacilityinSriCity.On11August2015,thecompanyannouncedthatthe
firstmanufacturingunitwasoperationalandintroducedtheXiaomiRedmi2Prime,asmartphonethatwas
assembledatthefacility.[26]XiaomiIndiachiefexecutiveManuJainstated,"WeannouncedourMakein
Indiaplansinthebeginningofthisyear[2015].[27]Wethoughtitwouldtakeustwoyearstosetupthis
manufacturingplant.Butsurprisinglywewereabletosetupeverythingandourproductionstartedwithin
sevenmonths."[28]
InJune2015,FrancebasedLHAviationsignedanMoUwithOISAdvancedTechnologiestosetupa
manufacturingplantinIndiatomanufacturedrones.[29]

JulyDecember2015[edit]
On8August2015,FoxconnannouncedthatitwouldinvestUS$5billionoverfiveyearstosetupR&Dand
hitechsemiconductormanufacturingfacilitytobesetupinMaharashtra.[30][31]Lessthanaweekearlier,
GeneralMotorshadannouncedthatitwouldinvestUS$1billiontobeginmanufacturingautomobilesinthe
state.[32]
On18August2015,LenovoannouncedthatithadbegunmanufacturingMotorolasmartphonesataplant
inSriperumbudurnearChennai,runbySingaporebasedcontractmanufacturerFlextronicsInternational
Ltd.TheplanthasseparatemanufacturinglinesforLenovoandMotorola,aswellasqualityassurance,
andproducttesting.Thefirstsmartphonemanufacturedatthefacilitywasthe4GvariantoftheMotorola
MotoE(2ndgeneration).[33][34]
On16October2015,BoeingchairmanJamesMcNerneysaidthatthecompanycouldassemblefighter
planesandeithertheApacheorChinookdefencehelicopterinIndia.[35]Thecompanyisalsowillingto
manufacturetheF/A18SuperHornetinIndiaiftheIndianAirForce(IAF)weretopurchaseit.[36]
InNovember2015,Taiwan'sWistronCorp,whichmakesdevicesforcompaniessuchasBlackberry,HTC
andMotorola,announcedthatitwouldbeginmanufacturingthedevicesatanewfactoryinNoida,Uttar
Pradesh.Acompanyspokespersonstated,"Thegovernment's'MakeinIndia'campaign,coupledwiththe
country'sgrowingconsumption,makesanexcellentcasefortheIndianmanufacturingsectortoemerge
asaglobalmanufacturinghubacrosssectors."[37]
On30November2015,theMinistryofRailwayssignedformalagreementswithAlstomandGETransport
worth400billion(US$5.9billion)tosetuplocomotivemanufacturingfactoriesinMadhepuraand
MarhaurainBihar.[38]
InDecember2015,Qualcommannouncedthatitwasstartinga"DesigninIndia"programmetohelp
mentorupto10Indianhardwarecompanieswiththepotentialtocomeupwithinnovativesolutionsand
helpthemreachscale.QualcommchairmanhadpromisedPrimeMinisterModithattheywoulddoso
duringthelatter'svisittoSiliconValleyinSeptember2015.Aspartoftheprogramme,thecompanywillset
upanInnovationLabinBengalurutoprovidetechnicalandengineeringsupporttotheselected
companies.[39]Inthesamemonth,Micromaxannouncedthatitwouldthreenewmanufacturingunitsin
Rajasthan,TelanganaandAndhraPradeshatacostof3billion(US$44million).Theplantswillbegin

FollowingJapanesePrimeMinisterShinzoAbe'svisittoIndiainDecember2015,itwasannouncedthat

InfantryCombatVehicle(FICV)inIndia.Thecontractwillbeawardedin2016.[45]
