MATH 230 Introduction To Probability Theory

Study Set III
Part I
Solve the following problems from your textbook.
5.7, 5.13, 5.41, 5.47, 5.55, 5.59, 5.67, 5.73, 5.77, 5.83, 6.3, 6.7, 6.15, 6.17, 6.45, 6.67, 6.81,
8.2, 8.7, 8.9, 8.23, 8.39, 8.41, 8.45, 8.51, 8.53
Part II
Solve the following problems.
Question 1. Suppose that the number of defects on a bolt of cloth produced by a certain
process has the Poisson distribution with mean 0.4. If a random sample of five bolts of cloth is
inspected, what is the probability that the total number of defects on the five bolts will be at
least 4?
Question 2. Suppose that on the average a certain store serves 5 customers per hour. What is
the probability that the store will serve more than 8 customers in a particular two-hour period?
Question 3. Suppose that two players A and B are trying to throw a basketball through a
hoop. The probability that player A will succeed on any given throw is 0.1, and he throws
until he has succeeded 5 times. The probability that player B will succeed on any given throw
is 4*0.1 = 0.4 and she throws until she has succeeded 4*5 = 20 times.
a) What are the expected numbers of throws for each player to win?
b) What are the variances of the number of throws for each player to win?
c) Which player is more likely to win on their 30th throw?
Question 4. Suppose that on a certain examination in advanced mathematics, students from
University A achieve scores that are normally distributed with a mean of 625 and a variance
of 100, and students from University B achieve scores which are normally distributed with a
mean of 600 and a variance of 150.
a) What is the probability that a student from University A will score more than 725?
b) What is the probability that a student from University B will score less than 450?
c) If two students from university A and three students from university B take this
examination, what is the probability that the average of the scores of the two students from
university A will be greater than the average of the scores of the three students from
university B?
Question 5. Let 1 , 2 , and 3 be independent lifetimes of memory chips. Suppose that each
has the normal distribution with mean 300 hours and standard deviation 10 hours. Compute
the probability that at least one of the three chips lasts at least 290 hours.

Question 6. The average number of customers arriving at a bank branch is eight per hour.
Assume that customer arrivals follow a Poisson process. The bank opens at 9:00 am in the
morning. Answer the following questions accordingly.
a) What is the probability that the first customer will arrive after 9:10 am?
b) Suppose that it is now 9:15 and the first customer has arrived at 9:12 am. What is the
probability that the second customer will arrive after 9:25 am?
c) What is the probability that the third customer arrives exactly at 9:45 am?
d) What is the probability that exactly three customers arrive by 9:45 am?
Question 7. Assume that the total number of goals scored per week in Spor Toto Super
League has a Normal distribution with mean and standard deviation . The following data
summarizes the total number of goals scored in the first 12 weeks of the 2014-15 season.

a) What is the average ( ) and the standard deviation () of the total number of goals scored
per week in Super Toto Super League in the first 12 weeks?
b) What is the probability that the mean () of the total number of goals scored per week in
the Super Toto Super League is greater than 25? (Hint: You are asked to find { 25}. Use

transformation where the random variable has a t-distribution with 1 degrees

of freedom.)
