ENGLISH OBJECTIVES FOR 9TH GRADE

UNIT 1. Parts of Speech


Students will be able to identify and use nouns, pronouns, verbs,
adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions correctly in sentences.
UNIT 2: The Sentence and Its Parts
Students will identify correctly the parts in each sentence. They will write
sentences in natural and inverted order.
UNIT 3: Using Phrases
Students will be able to use prepositional phrases, appositives and
appositive phrases, verbals, and correct placement of phrases.
UNIT 4: Clauses and Sentence Structure
Students will learn to identify and write using the different types of
clauses. They will learn in depth about noun clauses, adjective and adverb
clauses, and sentence structure.
UNIT 5: Writing Complete Sentences
Students will review sentence fragments and run-ons to avoid making
these mistakes when writing.
UNIT 6: Using Verbs
Students will review the principal parts of verbs, and how to form verb
tenses. They will be able to use active and passive voice correctly.
UNIT 7: Subject-Verb Agreement
Students must write sentences with correct subject-verb agreement to
avoid agreement problems in sentences.
UNIT 8: Using Pronouns
Students will identify pronoun cases. They will also correctly identify the
difference and use for who and whom.
UNIT 9: Using Modifiers
Students will be using adjectives and adverbs correctly to compare and
modify.
UNIT 10: Capitalization and Punctuation
To review the rules for capitalization and punctuation to avoid mistakes
in writing.

UNIT 1. The Sentence
Students will be able to identify the kinds of sentences and how to
punctuate them correctly. They will be able to identify the subject and
predicate. Students must write compound, complex and compound-complex
sentences correctly.
UNIT 2: Nouns
Students will be able to identify kinds of nouns and use them correctly in
writing.
UNIT 3: Verbs
Students will be able to use correct verb tenses. They will also learn to
identify transitive and intransitive verbs, as well as direct and indirect objects.
UNIT 4: Modifiers
Students will use adjectives and adverbs correctly to compare.
UNIT 5: Pronouns
Students will identify the different types of pronouns.
UNIT 6: Phrases
Students will write and identify prepositional phrases. They will be able
to distinguish gerunds, verbals, and infinitives.
UNIT 7: Clauses
Students will learn about the different types of clauses, independent,
subordinate, adjective, adverb, and noun clauses.
UNIT 8: Capitalization and Punctuation
To review the rules for capitalization and punctuation to avoid mistakes
in writing.

punctuate them correctly. They will be able to identify the subject and
