The Dystopian Trailer Project was one of my favorites so far of Sophomore year. This is mostly because I got to work in a
group of people that I didnt know very well, and get to do things outside of school. I also really enjoyed the media aspect
of the project, since I love filmmaking. This projects relates to social awareness because it had us look at trends and
events going on in the current world and critique them. Our group decided to focus on the availability of drugs in our
society. We critiqued the fact that theres a drug, prescription or over-the-counter, for almost every ailment, serious or
basic. During this process, we did research on the effects of the pharmaceutical companies on the world we live in. I came
away from the project looking at our society in a whole different light when it comes to medicine. I also learned a lot and
thought a lot while watching the films from other groups.
I think the project was also a big step for me in the world of directing films and other media productions. I went into the
project expecting it to be relatively simple, and didnt do much preplanning. We only had one major filming day, and this
really messed up my vision for the film, because we werent able to get everything we wanted done. I learned that I
needed to have a predetermined schedule or itinerary when going out to film, because there isnt enough time in the day to
do both planning and actual execution. Next time Ill make sure to include enough time for both.
I really enjoyed the group aspect of the project, because I was able to work on a complicated and involved project with
people I dont normally work with. My groups on media related projects have almost exclusively been Ben Miller and
Will Ederer, ever since early 8th grade. It was nice expanding from that, and being in a group with people that have
different styles when it comes to getting things done. I hope to do more of that, probably starting with the CAP Hollywood
assignment coming up in March.
Finally, I think that this project served mostly as a learning experience for me. The final product was not really what I was
looking for when I started, although I am satisfied with it. I can use this assignment mostly as something to build off of,
and take lessons from. Whether it be planning more and being more structured in how I direct, there was a lot I can
improve on. Im really looking forward to getting to try again.
