What Jesus' Winemaking Tells Us About God, Part 2 (Just Jesus Evangelistic

John 2:1-11:
1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of
Jesus was there:
2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no
wine.
4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet
come.
5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the
purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to
the brim.
8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.
And they bare it.
9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew
not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of
the feast called the bridegroom,
10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and
when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good
wine until now.
11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth
his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
----Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon
series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with

unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the
main thing the main thing -- and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of
the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America
is not only disobedient presidents and politicians but disobedient pastors,
preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey God's Great Commission
and who have refused to obey God's repeated commands to pray without
ceasing for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. This campaign is
inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, "For I
determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him
crucified." Acts 5:42 which says, "And daily in the temple, and in every house,
they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ." And 2 Timothy 2:4 which
says, No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he
may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of
those saints who still loves to hear the Old, old story of Jesus and His love -As the hymn says, For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to
hear it like the rest. This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and
understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is
hell. This is message number 17.
Charles Spurgeon said, If the Lord Jehovah makes us wait, let us do so with our
whole hearts; for blessed are all they that wait for Him. He is worth waiting for.
The waiting itself is beneficial to us: it tries faith, exercises patience, trains
submission, and endears the blessing when it comes. The Lords people have
always been a waiting people.
Everything Jesus did while He was on earth, He did with a purpose. We can take
none of His actions lightly, for every action provides a glimpse of who God is and
how He relates to us. Yesterday, we talked about how Jesus willingness to attend
a wedding party and to turn water into wine when the wine had run out shows
how God is concerned about every aspect of our lives. But, what we learn from
this passage goes even deeper than that.
When we think of Mary, we are likely to see her as the mother of the infant Jesus.
However, here in this passage we see her interacting with the adult Jesus, her
son who is also Gods son. It is she who brings the problem of the wine running
out to Jesus. Verse 3 reads, And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus
saith unto him, They have no wine. What Mary expected Jesus to do about this
problem, we do not know for sure. But, she expected him to do something. David
Guzik states that Mary, who had never seen Jesus perform a miracle yet, may

have been looking for vindication. For thirty years, she and Joseph were the only
ones who knew who Jesus really was, and now that Jesus was in the public eye,
she wanted to see him not just as her son, but as Gods Son. But, we cannot be
sure whether Mary was asking Jesus to perform a miracle or not.
Jesus responds to Marys request, saying, Woman, what have I to do with thee?
mine hour is not yet come. The way Jesus addresses Mary may sound harsh,
but it is not. Woman, the Greek word gunay, is a term of respect and
endearment. The phrase, What have I to do with thee?, was a common
expression that indicated a separation of responsibilities. Basically, Jesus is
saying that it is not His responsibility, as a guest at the wedding, to provide extra
wine. Then, perhaps suspecting that she expected a miracle from Him, He adds.
My time is not yet come.
Five times in Johns Gospel, we hear Jesus telling someone that His time to do
something has not yet arrived. This reminds us that God always has a plan. We
may want Him to do something sooner or later, but God knows the perfect time to
carry out His work. He sent Jesus into the world at the right time in history.
Galatians 4:4-5 says, When the fulness of time was come, God sent forth his
Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the
law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. It was not just happenstance
that Jesus came when He did.
The passage does not show Mary responding to Jesus, but evidently, she has a
sense that He is going to do something. Verse 5 tells us, His mother saith unto
the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. Mary trusted Jesus
completely. She didnt keep trying to push for her will to be done. She left the
matter in the Lords hands. And we all know what happened next.
This exchange between Jesus and Mary shows us three important truths:
1. God always has a purpose for His actions. Even when we do not understand
what is going on, God is working out His plan. Matthew Henry states that Jesus
worked this miracle "because he foresaw that it would confirm the faith of his
infant disciples" who had just begun to follow Him. It also would have confirmed
Marys faith and put her heart at ease regarding Jesus public ministry.
2. If we trust God and leave situations in His hands, everything will work out for
the good. Like Mary, we may want Jesus to do something for us, something that
we feel He ought to do, but we must remember that Jesus is wiser than us, and
He knows what is best. If we leave everything up to Him, it will work out just fine.

3. Gods timing is always best. In Gods economy, nothing is left up to chance.

One theologian stated, "For every thing Christ did, and that was done to him, he
had his hour, the fixed time and the fittest time, which was punctually observed."
Because Jesus was God, He never was surprised by events. He was not
surprised by the wine running out at the wedding. He knew what would take
place, and He knew what He would do in response. It happened all in Gods timing
for Him.
In closing, it is always the right time for you to place your complete trust and faith
in Jesus Christ like Mary did. The Bible says, Behold, now is the accepted time;
behold, now is the day of salvation. Please take this opportunity to receive
Jesus Christ as your Savior. Here is how.
1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God's law. The
Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: "For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth
good, and sinneth not." Romans 3:23 reads: "For all have sinned and come short
of the glory of God." In fact, I am the chief of sinners, so don't think that you're
alone.
2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23:
"For the wages of sin is death"
3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew
10:28: "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but
rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." The Bible
says in Revelation 21:8: "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable,
and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars,
shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is
the second death."
4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states
in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: "For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of
yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast."
5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He
wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, "For God so loved
the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him
should not perish, but have everlasting life."

6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus
Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very
moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: "That if thou shalt
confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God
hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." "For whosoever shall call
upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation,
please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a
sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake,
please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ
died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart
and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
