Candidates are required to give their answer in their own words as far as practicable. The figure in
the margin indicates full marks.

Attempt all the questions.

1.a) A steel bar 16cm long is acted upon by forces as shown in figure. Find the elongation of the
bar. Also find the stresses in each section Take E=2*10^6 kg/cm2. [8]

b) A bar of uniform thickness 't' tapers uniformly from a width of b1 at one end to b2 at

the
other end in length L. Find the expression for change in length of the bar when subjected to
axial force P.[7]
2. An infinitely small element consists of forces in two mutually perpendicular planes as shown in
Figure. Determine the normal and shearing stress on the inclined plane at an angle 30 0 with the
Vertical. Also calculate principal stresses, their directions and maximum shear stress.[12]

Verify the above result by constructing Mohr's Circle. [3]

3. Determine the principal axes and principal moments of inertia for the section shown below.
Also calculate polar moment of inertia and radii of gyration.[15]

4.a) Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram for the beam shown in figure below. [6]

given frame and show salient features (values of important points). [9]

5.a) Two beams are of same material and of equal strengths. One beam is of solid cross-section;
another is of hollow cross section having inside diameter equal to 0.5 times the outside diameter.
Compare the weights of the beam. [8]
b) Determine the diameter of solid shaft which will transmit 440kW at 280rpm. The angle of
twist must not exceed one degree per meter length and the maximum torsional stress is to be
limited to 40MPa. Assume G = 80GN/m2. [7]
6.a) A cylindrical shell 3 m long, 500 mm in diameter with metal thickness 12 mm is completely filled
with water at atmospheric pressure. If additional 3,00,000 mm 3 water is then pumped in find the
stress developed and change in dimensions. Take E = 2 105 N/mm2, 0.3 .[7]
b) A helical spring is made of 12mm diameter steel wire wound on a 120mm diameter mandrel. If
there are 10 active coils, what is spring constant? Take C=82GN/m 2. What force must be applied
to the spring to elongate it by 40 mm? [8]
7. Write short notes on (any two): [2*5=10]
a) Perpendicular axis theorem
b) Determinacy and indeterminacy
c) Relation between elastic constants

d) Elastic and plastic torsion
