Combustion Appliance Zone (CAZ) Test Procedure Steps

per BPI Building Analyst Technical Standards

Inspection Prep/Preliminary Inspection

Ambient CO readings pg. 12 #5 Out Temp (°F)
□ Calibrate (probe in fresh air, 60s countdown)
□ Record outside temperature (∆P goes as ∆T) Init CO (ppm)
□ Record ambient CO levels in the breathing zone (abort tests if >35ppm)
□ Verify safe levels throughout testing F/U CO (ppm)
Check for proper distances (1in, 6in)
Check for evidence of back-draft, rust, soot; if crushed, etc.
Check gas lines for leaks
Confirm flexible gas connector manufactured after 1972 pg. 11

Measure Base Pressure pg. 12 #1

Prepare the conditioned space
□ All CAZ appliances to off/pilot (boiler, furnace, water heater, etc.)
□ Close all exterior doors, windows, and fireplace dampers
□ Set REF tube outside
Baseline (Pa)
□ Open all interior doors as available
□ Establish Baseline pressure WRT outside

Establish Worst-Case Depressurization pg. 12 #2

1st Level Depressurization (WCD w/Fans Only)
□ Turn dryer on (clean lint trap) Dryer On (Pa)
□ Record Pressure
□ Turn on all exhaust fans (kitchen, bathrooms, etc.) Fans On (Pa)
□ Record Pressure
□ Close doors that increase (-) pressure in CAZ (“as smoke goes door goes” 1) Doors (Pa)
□ Record Pressure
2nd Level Depressurization (WCD w/Air Handler)
□ Turn on air handler (leave on only if it decreases pressure in the CAZ)2 AH On (Pa)
□ Record Pressure
Worst-Case Depressurization
□ Open doors that increase (-) pressure in CAZ (“as smoke goes....”) WCD (Pa)
□ Record Worst Case Scenario Depressurization
□ Compare to CAZ Depressurization Limits table pg. 14

Notes:

1 If smoke lingers or goes toward the CAZ the door should remain closed. If smoke goes under the door it should be opened.
2 If an A/C unit is outside and it's <50°F toggle the SVC Disconnect to prevent refrigerant flow.

Measure Worst-Case Spillage, Draft, CO pg. 12 #3 Min Draft (Pa)
Calculate & record minimum acceptable draft pg. 10
Drill temp probe holes in vents at appropriate distances
Spillage
□ Prep timer/stopwatch for 60s count
□ Fire the appliance with the smallest BTU output (clean traps as needed)
□ If a draft diverter is present immediately check for spillage3
Proceed under either WCD or Natural conditions (record values below)
□ Record undiluted steady-state temperature (SST) with temp probe (≤10m)
□ Record undiluted SST CO (2 places for the DHW)
□ Record draft in single-wall vent 1-2ft after diverter or elbow
□ Fire all other commonly-vented appliances in sequence
□ Immediately check for spillage at any draft diverters
□ Follow any necessary Action Level Retrofit Actions pg. 13

Notes:

3 If spillage doesn't end within 1 minute then the test fails under Worst Case; follow procedure on pg. 12 #4.
