4.1.1 Preparation of the area

All entry pass / documents required on the unloading site

shall be prepared, compiled and in possession of the Site
supervisor prior for entry to the designated unloading area.
The responsible personnel on the side of the client shall be
informed prior for any unloading activity. This shall be done
in order to provide full awareness to the client for the
activity to be executed.
The designated unloading area shall be checked by the
Safety Officer for any obstruction that may hinder the
unloading activity and cause unsafe situation for all
personnel involved on the activity.
After the area has been checked and cleared, it shall be
isolated and barricaded with safety hazard tape, to keep
unauthorized entry.
Upon completion of all the necessary entry pass and
clearance on the designated area, the vehicle where the
materials are loaded shall enter and move to the unloading
point.

4.1.2 Unloading of material

Unloading of the material shall be performed in a safe

manner. All the components shall be unloaded by the fork
lift. It shall be assisted by banks man, in order to avoid
unsafe condition and minimize the risk of damaging the
materials being unloaded.
The components shall be segregated in an orderly manner,
providing enough space to move them conveniently during

4.2 Assembly
4.2.1 Installation of scaffolding
a. Scaffolding shall be erected for access purpose during the
erection phase of the elevator shaft. These access
platforms shall be positioned on certain locations where
the erectors require adequate access space during
assembly.
b. The scaffolds shall be checked and warranted safe to use
by the Safety Officer prior for use.
4.2.2 Anchor bolt fixing
a. Lay-outing shall be carried out as per the design drawing
issued by the client for the location of the anchor bolts. The
dimensions stated on the drawing shall serve as the
guidelines to obtain the exact position of the anchor bolts
to be installed.
b. After the lay-out has been done and exact position has
been obtained, drilling of the ground shall proceed. This
shall be done on the specified locations where the column
shall be erected. The depth of the hole shall be 180mm
minimum. After drilling has been done, the hole shall be
cleaned to remove loose dust particles.
c. After cleaning, each hole shall be applied with Hilti HITRe500 anchor chemical, followed by embedding of the
anchor bolts. Mixing and application of the anchor
chemical shall be in accordance with the instruction stated
on the Technical Data sheet of Hilti HIT-Re500.

4.2.3 Erection of components

a. The erection activity shall be monitored by the Safety
officer to ensure a safe
b. The columns shall be positioned onto the designated
location for erection. The columns shall be erected by using

a lifting frame. This lifting frame is composed of 2 A frames

and a lifting beam, accompanied with chain blocks. This
shall be assembled prior for erecting the columns.
The A frames, which are intended for the positioning of the
columns, shall be situated on top of each building beside
the erection area. The lifting beam shall be lifted next. This
shall be lifted manually onto the location at the top near
the A Frame.
Once the lifting beam is lifted, the A Frames shall now be
erected. The frames shall be positioned onto the area
where the columns shall be erected, providing assistance
on lifting the columns.
After the frames are positioned, the lifting beam shall be
installed next. It shall be placed on top of the A frame, with
both ends secured on each frames. Upon securing the
lifting beam, the chain blocks shall be installed next. This
chain blocks shall be fixed on the designated plates which
are connected onto the lifting beam.
As soon as the lifting frame is assembled, the column
erection shall proceed. The columns which are located on
the inner corner shall be lifted first. The columns shall be
lifted by anchoring the lifting hook of the chain block on
the lifting lug attached on the columns. Once the columns
are lifted, it shall be fixed on location by inserting the base
plates onto the anchor bolts and fastening the nut.
During the lifting phase, the columns shall be manually
positioned on the ground by erectors by guiding the
direction of it while it is lifted. Each erector shall carefully
direct the movement of the column, slightly moving it from
time to time, until the desired position has been reached.
Upon erecting the first 2 columns, the lifting frame shall
be moved to the position near the next columns shall be
erected. Once the lifting frame is set, the same procedure
stated on entry f & g shall be repeated.
After all the columns are erected, levelling shall proceed.
Each column shall be levelled to ensure the straightness
and uniformity of the structure. This shall be done by using
a water bar level.

4.2.4 Beams / support erection

a. Each beam to be connected onto each column shall also be
lifted using the lifting frame. These beams shall be fixed in
accordance to the design drawing issued by the client.

b. The lifting procedure shall be similar to the ones mentioned

on the previous activity.
c. Each lifted beams shall be positioned by the erectors on
the designated location indicated on the drawing. Upon
reaching it, each ends shall be tack welded onto the
surface of the column to provide temporary hold point.
d. After all edges are tacked, it shall be levelled using bar
water level. Once levelness is achieved, the edges shall be
full-welded.
e. This procedure shall be repeated until all structural beams
are erected.
4.2.5 Installation of additional scaffolding
a. Scaffolding shall be installed around each sections of the erected
structure.
b. The platform shall be erected for convenience of the NDT
technician and the protective coat applicator.
c. Each erected platform shall be inspected by the Safety Officer to
ensure the usability and safety of workers who will use it. A
safety tag or sign shall be placed to inform any user that the
scaffold is safe to use. Any platform without any sign or tag shall
be deemed unsafe for use.
4.2.6

Non-Destructive Testing

a. A Non-destructive testing shall be conducted on the welds of the

elevator shaft structure.
b. Magnetic-Particle testing (MPT) shall be conducted on 10%
coverage for all the welds. The welds to be tested shall be
randomly selected but with consideration for the load and
strength of the structure.
c. A Third-party inspection team (TPI) shall be assigned to execute
the test. A report shall be generated for record of the NDT that
has been conducted.
4.2.7 Surface preparation & protective coating application
a. After MPT has been conducted and all the tested joints have
passed, application of protective coating shall follow.
b. The surface of the steel structure shall be cleaned by using
power tool & hand tool cleaning. This shall be executed by the

use of emery disc-fixed angle grinder and Grade 80 sand paper.

For corners, pencil grinder shall be used if the emery disc is
unusable.
Excess welds, tacks and unwanted foreign matter on the surface
and corner connection of the steel structure shall be mandatorily
removed.
After the surface preparation has been done, stripe-coating shall
be initiated. This shall be done by applying metal primer on
corners and edges using brush. This is to ensure that these
secluded areas are fully coated with paint.
After stripe-coating, full coating shall proceed. The primer coat
shall be fully applied using hand-roller. The surface must be fully
coated without any trace of exposed substrate. Should the coat
look thin, another coat of primer shall be applied to achieve the
desired appearance.
After the structure is fully primed and dried, the epoxy topcoat
shall be applied next.
With similarity with the primer application, stripe-coating shall
also be done for the topcoat application. Afterwards, the full
application shall be initiated using hand roller. The procedure
shall be done until the desired visual appearance has been
achieved.

4.2.8 Dismantling
a. After the paint application has been completed, dismantling of
the lifting frame and scaffoldings shall proceed.
b. Components of the lifting frame shall be disassembled by
removing the lifting beam first. The chain blocks shall be
removed from their connector plates one by one. After that, the
bolted connection shall be loosened up and be brought down.
Afterwards, the A-frames are to follow.
c. After the lifting frame has been removed, the scaffolding shall be
dismantled next.
d. Extra caution shall be observed during dismantling stage in order
to avoid damaging the coated structure.
e. Any surface of the steel structure damaged during the
dismantling stage shall be subject for repair.
