ABSTRACT

The purpose of this experiment is to calibrate volumetric flask. The volumetric flask must be
clean and dry to record its weight. The volumetric flask was filled with distilled water up to the
mark and the volumetric flask has been weigh again and the temperature of calibrate water have
been record. The calibration of volumetric flask also to measure the exact volumes can be
delivered or contained and to know the new calibration mark of volumetric flask. The
temperatures of water we get from this study are 29.0 0C. Meanwhile, the exact distance for the
new mark is 7.6464 mm.

OBJECTIVES
1) To calibrate a dry 100 mL volumetric flask.
2) To measure the exact volumes of volumetric flask can delivered or contained.
3) To determine the new calibration mark of 100 mL volumetric flask

INTRODUCTION
For making accurate measurements in analytical analysis, it is importance to the balance the
volumetric equipment. Ability to precisely measure volume of the solution using volumetric
flask is crucial for the accuracy of analysis. In this experiment, the volumetric flask pipettes, and
burettes also can be calibrate using same procedure. The experimental procedure includes
gravimetric calibration of pipettes and volumetric flasks. This experiment was done to provide
the accuracy of the markings of the volumetric as well as on proper technique. Volumetric flasks
are designed to contain a specific volume of liquid.
Glassware is commonly calibrated using a liquid of known, specific density, and an analytical
balance. The procedure is to determine the mass of liquid the glassware will hold, and to divide
this mass of liquid by the density of the liquid, obtaining the corresponding volume of liquid.
Density is affected by temperature of surrounding, so it must to measure the liquid temperature
accurately using thermometer. Thats why in procedure, it is needed to let the distilled water
stand at room temperature for 15 minutes.

There are several techniques of the calibration of volumetric glassware that are in wide use and
with the student should be familiar and know. For this experiment we use the direct, absolute
calibration is based on the direct mass measurement of water delivered by a burette or pipet or
contained in a volumetric flask and conversion to volume with the density, at the specified
temperature.

METHOD
200 mL of distilled water was left for 15 minutes at room temperature. 2 cm sticker was pasted
onto the center a dry 100 mL of volumetric. The weight of the volumetric flask was weighed
accurately. After 15 minutes, the temperature of room and the equilibrated water was measured
using thermometer. The equilibrated distilled water was filled up to mark and the flask was
weigh again. The weight of water in the flask was converted into volume using the data given. If
the volume less than the standard volume that is 100 mL, a new mark on the sticker was make
that is 5 mm above the present mark of the volumetric flask and vice versa. The water was added
(or reduced) to the new mark which has just been made. The volumetric flask was weighed again
and the new volume was calculated. Using the ratio of volume and distance, the exact distance
for the new mark was determined. So, that the volume of the flask was accurate.

DISCUSSION
This experiment is about calibration of volumetric flask and to determine the new calibration
mark of the volumetric flask. The purpose of this experiment is to measure the accuracy of
volumetric flask because to ensure this apparatus to contain, deliver good, accurate volume. All
volumetric flask are allowed tolerance by manufacturer.
Firstly, the experiment was done by left the distilled water into beaker for 15 minutes at room
temperature. Then, we are weighing an empty volumetric flask using analytical balance before
we fill the volumetric flask with distilled water. The weight of empty flask that we get is
61.0987g and weights of volumetric flask with water (at current 100 mL) are 160.1713g. After
that, we calculated weight of water that is 99.0726g. To get a good accuracy, the experiment need
to done until three trials. The temperatures of the room we get are 30.0 0C and temperatures of the
equilibrated water are 29.00C.
Furthermore, the weight of the water in the flask was converted into volume and the values we
get are 99.5481g. Water was added into volumetric flask until 5mm above the original level
because the volume of water is less than 100 g. Next, the volumetric flask was weight again
because the water has been added and new volume was calculated that are 99.8436 mL. Lastly,
the exact distance for the new mark was determined that is 7.6464 mm so that, the volume of the
flask is accurate.
There are possible source of error when do this experiment that is parallax error. To reduce error,
we must read properly the scale of apparatus. It is important that the eye be on the same level as
the bottom surface of the water (meniscus) in order to avoid parallax errors. Next, the volumetric
flask must clean from the dirt and dry from water droplet. Under this condition, it will cause
some error to the experiment. Lastly, the analytical balance must be calibrated before use it
because in this experiment it is crucial to know the weight of the volumetric flask.
I think there are weaknesses in this experimental design that is every volumetric flask have
different weight and volume. So, it takes too much time to calibrate every volumetric flask. Next,
when do these experiments every person have different temperature of equilibrated water and
temperature of water. Different temperature of water can affected the result of data. Since liquids
have a tendency to change volume, so we want the liquid to be at the temperature we are

favorable likely to use so that the calibration will have the most accuracy. We used water in this
experiment because it is thermal equilibrium in surrounding.

CONCLUSION
Based on this experiment, we can conclude that this study are to calibrate a dry 100 mL
volumetric flask, to measure the exact volumes of volumetric flask can delivered or contained
and to determine the new calibration mark of 100 mL volumetric flask. It is very importance to
calibrate the volumetric flask before use it. The exact distances for the new mark of the
volumetric flask are 7.6464 mm. The objective of this experiment was achieved.
