„My Vote‟
We live in a democracy. Each adult member of our
community has the opportunity to vote for those
hoping to govern our nation. It all sounds great in
theory but when you read some of the news about
those we elect, it doesn't necessarily endear them to
us. How would we feel if we didn‟t have the vote?
We‟d no doubt fight for the right to have it, just as our
ancestors did only a few decades ago. So here we Revd. Bob Politt
are with the freedom to vote but what do we do with
it?
“It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government
except all the others that have been tried.“ (Winston Churchill). I guess
the strength of our system is that at least we can try and „get them out‟
after five years if we don‟t like what they‟re doing. It seems almost
inevitable that when people hold any office for too long they become
over familiar and are in danger of treating with contempt those for
whom they are responsible.
On the other hand, democracy can be a great opportunity for those
elected to excel and serve with distinction, bettering a nation and
uniting and inspiring its people.
So, how do you vote? Do you vote for a party, an individual politician,
particular policies or do you vote for change? It‟s really not that easy,
especially when the major parties seem so similar. There seems no
obvious answer.
The prophets in the Old Testament were the great political spokesmen
of their day, proclaiming what God wanted to see happening in the
politics of every community. I love these words of a guy called Micah,
who pointed the people and politicians of his day to what God had said:
“He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord
require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with
your God.” Micah 6:8
Justice, mercy and humility, now that‟s a good place to start rather than
promises of this, that and the other. If I could vote for someone who
would act with justice, mercy and humility, I would feel pretty confident
that I could trust them, by hook or by crook, to deliver the goods to the
best of their ability. So, who can I vote for……?
Christian greetings,

FROM THE EDITOR
Hello again. It's my pleasure to bring you the
Link this month. I‟m writing this listening to
the swallows who‟ve just returned from their
African holidays. It already feels like we‟re
heading for summer.
We‟ve got a wide variety of events
happening locally over the next few weeks.
Hopefully you can get out and about in our lovely
countryside. To briefly mention a few:
 There‟s a bluebell walk featured on page 27
 Percy‟s plant sale is here again on page 22
 And the Raisborough‟s garden is open again on page 19
We are also into the regular round of Parish Council AGM‟s. I
can recommend attending your local one to find out what‟s
happening in your village.
Thanks to all those who have returned envelopes with
donations. As Brian explained last month these donations
make sure we can keep delivering the magazine free to all of
you. It‟s not too late to send an envelope.
Thanks also to all those completing the survey. We‟ll bring
you the results next month but this is your magazine so if
we‟re missing something you‟d like to see let us know.

Prayer and Reflection
Text for the Month… John 15 : 16 & 17
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and
bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever
you ask in my name. This is my command: Love each other.
The NIV Bible
Prayer for the Month.
Lord, we have the opportunity to make a choice as we vote in the
election this month. Help us to remember that you chose us to be your
servants in this world and commanded us to love one another. Help us
not to be full of self importance, thinking of ourselves, as full of wis-
dom about who we are, and what we can achieve. Gracious God, we
know that you value each one of us, not for what we might become,
but for what we are. We thank you for making every one of us unique,
precious in your sight and we rejoice that you love no one more or
less than any other. Teach us what that means and help us to live
each day in the assurance it brings. Give us proper respect both for
ourselves and for those around us. Help us to make our choice know-
ing that we have been chosen by you to serve others in this world and
to think as we vote not, for what benefits us but for that which will
benefit the whole community.
In Jesus name we pray. Amen

May Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council
Work has been started to provide new water troughs and a new
compost area at the allotments, this work has been delayed due to
poor weather but should be completed in the spring. Work has
also started on painting the exterior of the Village Hall.
The Parish Council are considering applying for Grit Bins to be
placed in the following locations:
- Outside Village Hall next to wheelie bin
- By the bus shelter in Goddards lane
- Outside white Hart near the metal bins
- Bow Grove, possibly on the corner of Bullsdown
Please let the council know if you have any objections to grit bins in
these locations or if you would like to nominate other locations.
An emergency plan for Sherfield-on-Loddon including information on
what to do when faced by flooding will be available on the Parish
Council website from 1st May. A copy will also be put in the Parish
Council folder in the post office. Please take time to read it and
keep the list of useful numbers to hand. If you feel able to offer
assistance in an emergency by providing any of the following skills
or services: first aid, electrician, plumbing, tree surgery, transport
please let the clerk have your contact details.
The Parish Council have become aware of a number of residents
using areas of the Village Green to park their cars. The bylaws
state: No person shall, without lawful authority, draw, drive, or
permit to remain upon the Commons any carriage, cart, caravan
truck motor vehicle, motor cycle or any other vehicle. Provided that
this byelaw shall not apply:
(i) to the use by any vehicle of any road on the common for the
purpose of travelling to or from any property to which the
common affords the sole means of vehicular access;
(ii) to the standing of any vehicle upon any road on the Commons
within 10 yards of any property to which the Commons affords
the sole means of vehicular access in connection with the use of
that property;
The Parish Council requests that residents do not park or drive on
the Green unless they are complying with these conditions.
A Parish Plan should present a clear picture of the way our local
community views its future. If you would like to help preserve and
develop what is good in Sherfield-on-Loddon and identify areas
needing attention then please volunteer to help with developing a
Parish Plan by contacting the Clerk.
The Village Green Volunteers will be meeting on 8th May at 2.30pm,
please meet on the Green behind the Village Hall. The next Village

Beat Officer‟s Report

Speed enforcement: myself and a colleague from the
Roads Policing Unit (RPU) were around my beat on
March 16. The results:
Little London: 2 x DAT and several thank you‟s.
Bramley Road, Sherfield on Loddon: 1 x V/ warning
Church Road, Mortimer West End: 2xFPNs; 4xDAT; 5 x V/warnings
I know speeding is still an issue, please report any excess speed to
101, giving location and time of day of the incident.
Anti social behaviour: the latest craze seems to be skateboards in
the Campbell Court business units car parks. Please report any
incidents to 101.
Public reassurance: The increase in the number of outbuilding
burglaries has slowed, but is still an issue. A victim pack has been
put together giving crime prevention advice,
There was an increase in vehicle crime during March, with
valuables being stolen; PLEASE do not leave valuables in an
unattended vehicle. As we come into the better weather beauty
spot car parks will once again be more „attractive‟ to thieves.
Anyone interested in setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in
their area, please give me a call on 07770 471655
General safety advice: I would just like to remind people, especially
the younger residents, then when walking alone along isolated
footpaths, to take care. Be aware of your surroundings and if
anyone else is about. A recent incident in the Basingstoke area has
brought to light the importance of taking care when walking alone.
Please be vigilant: Please report anything suspicious – vehicles or
persons to 0845 045 45 45

WANT TO ACT?
LODDON Players will shortly be reading
and auditioning for their autumn
production and if you‟ve ever considered
joining a theatre group, now‟s the time!
In celebration of our fifth anniversary, we
are planning a “A Taste for Murder” by
Angela Lanyon. This is an audience
participation murder mystery (with
supper in the interval). Members of the
Banks Family are gathered together to celebrate the return
of the plant hunter, Fiona. But there is dirty work afoot in the
nursery garden. Deep seated resentments bubble to the
surface and, after plenty of hints and innuendos, a murder is
committed. Who did what to whom? Readings of the play
will take place on Monday May 10th and Monday May 17th,
7.30 pm in Breach Lane Chapel. Auditions to be held on
Wednesday May 19th at 7.30pm. If you would
like to take part (either on the stage or
helping behind it), but can‟t make any of
these dates, please contact me. No
experience necessary but lots of enthusiasm
welcomed.

„Who‟s getting the Nun? ‟
An interesting take on faith from David Fright.
Well me of course, but not yet.
Faith isn‟t easy, at least not for me. It‟s not as
though I don‟t put in an effort. I go to church, read
the bible and attend my home group. I think about
God, creation and the rest, all the time. So why
doesn‟t God come and sit at the end of my bed put
his arms around me and tell me all about it?
Of course there are those who see the perfect light
without much effort, reading a pamphlet, listening
to an inspirational speaker or finding Christ sitting
next to them during a routine domestic event. It‟s
so irritating!
I struggle all the time to see the good while dodging the doubts.
If I‟m honest the good always wins, through answered prayers
or experiencing the unexplainable. I smile and think of God.
Please don‟t misunderstand. These events are not to be
compared with blinding lights or a sudden urge to drop to my
knees. No, it‟s more of a warm feeling, (a fleeting glimpse she
called it) which gives me the certainty that God is here.
I met my two friends in one of the bars at terminal one. The
three of us were going to Italy for some training. The
importance of all three to purchase a round of drinks before we
left can‟t be overstated. The usual conversation around work
and sport kept us occupied until the „Go to gate‟ sign
illuminated. The three glasses were emptied. with synchronised
ceremony.
When we arrived at the gate we all spotted her at the same
time. I thought, and they said, „Who‟s getting the Nun?‟
She wasn‟t black and white but white and pale blue. Standing
on her own, she had an unusual look of confidence and
defencelessness. I didn‟t know why but I had a certainty that we
would be sitting next to each other, and so it was, to the joy of
my two friends.

(Continued on page 24)

Page 23
(Continued from page 23)

It is of course normal to talk to your fellow passenger, but this

one was a Nun. There would be no small talk, there never is,
because I‟m useless at it, I can never see the point. So it would
be all things Christian and that was a problem because I was
certain that any attempt that I might make to converse would
only serve to demonstrate that my education and faith fell short
of the mark….well hers. I stared out of the window. Maybe the
chap in the isle seat might help out, he didn‟t.
After ten minutes God gave me neck ache. I suddenly felt more
positive and it occurred to me that this was an opportunity to
ask all sorts of questions I wouldn‟t otherwise get a chance to.
Anyway what would it matter? Our paths wouldn‟t cross again
and my uselessness would be forgotten. I looked across at her,
giving notice that I was about to speak
Many things about this Nun glowed, not least her all knowing
smile. However, what caught my eye was her crucifix. It was
slender, made of wood and was as perfect as I could imagine.
Her face had a soap and water look which made it difficult to
gauge her age although I estimated between fifty and sixty. I
took a breath.
„What are you going to do in Italy‟? I asked
„A walking holiday with a group I have not yet met‟ she said.
„Is it something you have done before? I asked‟
„Yes although I usually spend my holiday on my own. Last year I
spent three weeks in a log cabin in the Canadian woods‟
Why? I asked.
„To think about God, contemplate and study the bible‟
I felt as though I was on the wrong side but I pressed on.
I asked what she did when she wasn‟t on holiday. She told me
she was a nurse working in Thetford, a senior nurse, which
meant that she spent most of her time with administration. To
relieve herself of that she volunteered for overseas work
whenever she could. I asked her what that was like,
„challenging‟ was her response and she went on to tell me of the
work she did and some of the horrors she had to deal with. She
Page 24
finished with a broad grin after telling me that one night in Bosnia
an open sewer had become blocked and diverted itself through
her tent and under her camp bed. One of the lighter moments
apparently.
I was beginning to feel more confident.
At my home group we discussed the cross and some of us, well
me to be accurate, thought it ironic that the symbol of Christianity
was the tool of Christ‟s execution. I thought I would try it in
conversation.
„That‟s a wonderful Crucifix‟
„Yes I‟ve had it a long time. I am very fond of it‟
„It‟s strange that the symbol of our faith should be the means of
his death‟
She smiled and clutched the cross.
„I would be happy to wear an electric chair
around my neck if that‟s how he died‟
I squirmed visibly and wished I hadn‟t
mentioned the cross.
I had a thought that if I stopped talking she
might take the initiative and all I would have to
do is listen.
It worked. Among other things she told me that
she was the daughter of a Rector and at the
age of nine she knew she wanted to become a
Nun and give her life to God.
The steward arrived with the bar trolley. I ordered a G&T; she
ordered water and grinned. I had the feeling that she wanted to
indulge herself in mischief at my expense but thought it
unchallenging.
„Could I have the gin bottle when you have finished with it, I want
to fill it with water and give it to the Bishop, see what he has to
say‟
We both laughed and I relaxed.
Of course all of this was, I hoped, a softening up process for the
question I really wanted to ask.
(Continued on page 26)
Page 25
(Continued from page 25)

„Forgive me, but you must have had some experiences?‟

„Oh yes many‟,
She paused and looked down at some distant point.
„Not really they are very small, short and well, fleeting, just
glimpses really, but more than enough for me to know that
God is always with me‟.
The „All Day Deli‟ sandwiches arrived and before I new it we
were fastening our seat belts. After we landed I lost touch
with her until I came out into the arrivals hall. I saw a group
of middle aged walking professionals. All wearing a stereo
typed outfit, of sturdy boots, tough trousers and green
sleeveless jackets with lots of small pockets.
She was standing in the front and middle of the group. It
seemed with their permission. Reminiscent of Margaret
Thatcher at the end of a European summit.
She was a foot shorter than any of them. Her pale blue
dress stopped just at the middle of her knee. The shins
beneath were pale white. Her feet tied into black leather
shoes, the sort designed to make walking hospital wards
more comfortable. She saw me, smiled broadly and waved,
seemingly with some pleasure. I still haven‟t worked out
why, although I had a horrible thought that the two hours
spent with me made her feel better about herself.
I found out on the aeroplane that they would be paired up
to share bedrooms. I could hear them thinking „Who‟s
getting the Nun?‟ I don‟t know of course but one of them
was in for a treat and would very likely go home a different
person. I have always felt hard
done by, not having my own
Jacob‟s Well experience (John 4:.1-
26). She didn‟t, short fleeting
glimpses were more than enough
for her. That being the case they
should be enough for me too.
Shouldn‟t they?

Whit Sunday Bluebell Walk

A walk for all villagers is being arranged by Sandy Johnston to
take place on Sunday May 23rd to take in the
bluebell woods at Hartley Wespall and
Rotherwick. The walk will be departing from
The Baptist Chapel, Sherfield on Loddon at mid-
day, and St. Leonard‟s Church will be providing
refreshments for all walkers at St. Mary‟s
Church, Hartley Wespall.
Anyone is entitled to join the walk without
sponsorship, but St. Leonard‟s Church is looking
for sponsored walkers to support the building
project for the toilets adjacent to the church.
Sponsor forms can be obtained from Donald Dawson
(882379) or one of St. Leonard‟s Church Wardens. There will
be a five mile and an eight mile walk, both to take in the
refreshment stop at Hartley Wespall.
Please make a note in your diary – this will be a fun walk and
an excellent opportunity to see the wonderful bluebells which
hopefully will be in full glory at the time.

What have we been up to?

It is now a year since our project was
launched to provide toilets, a kitchen
and crèche area at St. Leonard‟s Church
and now is the time to take a look at
what has been achieved and what still
needs to be done. As Revd Bob Politt
wrote in this column last month almost
£65,000 has been raised so far towards
our target of £200,000. There are
essentially three main sources of
income that we reach out to, these
being individual donors, fund raising
events and charitable trusts/
organisations. By far the most important source of income is
from individual donors, and we have been blessed to have
received many very generous donations and promises from
so many of you. Our thanks go to you all, and also to Sue
Welsh for generously donating gifts given in memory of her
late husband Freddie at his memorial service. These
donations totalled a staggering £1,480. We are very grateful
for this kind and unexpected gift. Individual donations from
all our supporters have provided 80% of our funding so far.
Our fund raising events account for about 10% of the income,
and so far we have had concerts, lectures, festivals, sales,
raffles, and sponsored weight loss (thank you Shan) to
mention just a few. We have written to 33 charitable trusts/
organisations and have had donations from three, although
we are following up several promising leads.
In 1867 the Revd Alfred Gresley Barker was responsible for
restoring St. Leonard‟s Church from (in his own words)
“notoriously the most ruinous in the Diocese, to one thought
worthy by the Archdeacon, at his last visitation, of public
praise”. The total cost -£1,524-13s-3d. It is due to people
like the Revd Barker and others who have been later

Page 28
custodians of the church that we now have such a beautiful
and well restored church in which to worship. We now face
our greatest challenge yet and the PCC are focussed to
provide the toilets, kitchen and crèche area to bring the
church into the 21st century. But we still need your help! We
are appealing for continued help of any sort in order to raise
the further sums required for the project. As Bob said last
month “An ocean is made up of many drops”. Every little
helps – please give generously.
On 8th May we have Percy‟s Plant Sale at the village hall (see
page 22) and there is the sponsored Whit Sunday bluebell
walk on May 23rd (see page 27) to look forward to. Please
support these two events if you possibly can. With so much
going on this month the Stewardship Scheme, whereby we
invite people to take £10 and use it in some way to make
more money for the Extension Fund, will be launched at a
later date by Richard Elphick. Donald Dawson

EVERGREEN‟S CLUB
for the over 60‟s
Report by Jean Berntsen.
The meeting of the Evergreen's Club was held on Monday
April 12th. The guest speaker was Alan Turton, the Curator
at Basing House. This proved to be a very interesting and
also very informative, but sadly time caught up with us and
his talk had to be cut short. The May meeting will herald the
club's 64th birthday, members can enjoy the party spirit.
In July the Club will be paying a visit and enjoying afternoon
tea at Hordle Womens Institute in the New Forest. Anyone
who would like to come along with us would be most wel-
come. The price for the trip will be £15.50.
For more information please contact Jean Berntsen on 01256

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

Len Stubbings, a member of the National Vegetable
Association, a judge and an examiner of judges, came
to the Sherfield Gardening Club on the evening of 19 th
April & delivered a talk on growing vegetables in
containers.
He began with some practical tips on where to source cheap pots
(Morrisons!) & how to set them up. One particular point he made
was that you should put in a hole approximately 2 inches from the
base. If using a pot with holes in the base, you should insert a
plastic liner. This means that when watering a reservoir of water
always remains in the bottom of the pot thus encouraging roots to
grow towards the base. There then followed a slide show of the
variety of vegetables that can be grown in pots.

Report by Gill Fearon

NWR met recently for a James Bond evening. To continue with

our 60s theme, we chose to watch the first Bond film from 1962,
„Dr No‟, starring a very young looking Sean
Connery, who as he is 80 this year, would have
been 32 when the film was made. The story was
set in Jamaica and much of the filming took place
there, as well as Pinewood Studios! It was worth
watching for the scenery alone. The film had all
the ingredients for suspense and excitement.
There were car chases, fights, shootings, a hunt by
dogs and armed baddies, a massive poisonous spider crawling
up Bond‟s naked arm and of course Bond became trapped in an
underground network of chambers where world domination was
being planned by the deranged Dr No. Just when you thought
that Bond surely must have been beaten (although of course
you knew he wouldn‟t be!), he manages to defeat the criminals,
blow up their control centre and make his escape with the
beautiful girl, played by Ursula Andress wearing just a bikini!
Compared to later Bond films, there was a distinct lack of „hi-tec‟
gadgets and to add to the suspense, there were long periods of
silence as well as dramatic music. Connery was a superb Bond;
ruthless, debonair and witty. We all enjoyed the film, even if we
were not really avid fans of James Bond. It was easy to follow,
there were no complicated plots and there was none of the
really fast action that you find in films of today, where it is
sometimes difficult to see what is actually happening! We also
did a „Bond‟ quiz with some quite challenging questions! A good
evening of light entertainment!
Our next event is to see „The Graduate‟ at the Haymarket – the
play version of the book by Charles Webb written in 1963 which
was also made into a film starring Dustin Hoffman. Our next
meeting will be an art evening, where we‟ll bring examples of
art we like or own and then talk about why we like it or why it is
special to us. May is going to be a busy month for us, as later in
the month we‟ll be doing our usual evening ramble combined
with a meal at a local pub. Always a popular event!
For more details of NWR, please call me on 882106 (evenings).

THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Reported by Ilene Iles
Dee Bulpitt, our President, opened the Meeting by welcoming
everyone, Members and Visitors from other local W.I.‟s, to our 87 th
Birthday Party Meeting with a special mention to Eryl Thompsett our
WI Adviser and Jean Johnson and her sister. Dee went on to thank
Hatch Warren WI, Basingstoke Evening WI, Old Basing WI, Bramley
WI and Eryl Thompsett for their birthday cards and she also gave
thanks to Helen Rolton and her ladies for the lovely table
decorations.
Jerusalem was sung, Val Denny dealt with the correspondence. Dee
advised that we will have a table at the Fete. Birthday cards were
handed out by Brenda Frost and Dee confirmed that there would be a
walk on the 15th April. Dee encouraged Members to attend our Group
Meeting. Lois Batting confirmed that she and Kathleen Gaiger would
prepare the Archives of both the Sherfield-on-Loddon W.I and the
Village Hall for the next Meeting. The Business part of the afternoon
closed at 2.25 p.m.
Dee then introduced our Speaker, Mrs Stewart, whose talk was
entitled “All Things Chinese”. She started by explaining that she was
born and brought up in Hong Kong and lived for a long time in
Shanghai. It was evident that she loved “all things Chinese” and was
very knowledgeable about their history, culture and language. A
vast country, China covers over 5,600,000 square miles, and is
known by the Chinese as the “Central Kingdom” (they believe they
are the centre of the world). Archaeological evidence has shown that
their civilisation can be traced back 6,500 years and the writing
system goes back beyond the Egyptians. The main language is
Mandarin Chinese and this is the second most used language in the
world, although very difficult to understand and write. Up until the
middle of the 19th century only 2% of the population could be
considered literate. They are believed to have discovered America in
1421, pre Columbus. She explained that they are very inventive
(porcelain, paper, printing, gun powder, compass etc.), invented the
weaving of silk, are very practical and waste nothing. Mrs Stewart
concluded by saying that they no longer carry out one of their more
barbaric customs of binding the feet of baby girls! Tess Morris gave
the vote of thanks.
A sumptuous birthday tea followed with a most delicious birthday
cake made by Tess Morris and the raffle was drawn.
