By Cheryl Conway
proclamation from
the township mayor
naming a day after
him and then presented an
Outstanding Citizen award,
17-year old Malcolm
Sutherland-Foggio
impresses those who meet him
and learn about his mission
to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer research.
At the Thurs., Feb. 25,
Florham Park Borough
Council meeting, Mayor
Mark Taylor declared Sat.,
Feb. 27 as Malcolm Sutherland-Foggio Day. That day
was picked to bring attention to Malcolms seventh
annual Make Some Noise:
Cure Kids Cancer Foundation Lucky 7-Noise Night
dinner/auction held that
same night at the Park
Savoy in Florham Park.
Borough officials, Council
President
Tom
Michalowski and Councilmember Charlie Malone
attended the gala and presented Malcolm with an
Outstanding
Citizen
Award, joining about 90
people and raising $80,000.
Malone had suggested to
borough officials that Malcolm deserves recognition
for his dedication to pediatric cancer, explains Sheila
Williams, municipal borough clerk.

Malcolm has lived in

our town; some know him;
some of the others did not
meet him before, says
Williams. But when they
did that night of the council
meeting, when Malcolm
spoke about his mission,
Williams says Ive never
seen any of them speechless. People were just weeping, from his story and
experiences in battling cancer. He gave a very moving speech at the council
meeting that left myself, the
mayor and council and audience members in tears
and unable to speak for several minutes as Malcolm
described his first stay at the
hospital that was treating
him for cancer.
Williams says, He is
quite the local hero! He is a

very bright young man, who

despite being in a considerable amount of pain, managed to think of others and
start this foundation for pediatric research.
Battling cancer for
seven years, Malcolm was
diagnosed in 2008, at the
age of 10, of having Pelvic
Ewings Sarcoma, a highly
aggressive and malignant
bone tumor. The youngest
of three boys, Malcolm was
a healthy kid at soccer practice when I felt my hip
pop, he describes. The
coach carried me off; mom
took me to the orthopedist
the next day.
When an MRI unveiled a
massive tumor in the
growth plate of his hip,
Malcolm was sent to Childrens Hospital in Philadel-

phia, underwent chemotherapy and removal of his hip,

describes Malcolm, a senior
at the Delbarton School in
Morristown.
I got through it, he
says. Im doing as well as
could be expected. Besides
facing some health related
issues, mostly due to the
chemotherapy that killed
my immune system, Malcolm says I dont let it kill
me; I live life the best I
can. He is done with treatments but goes back for a
checkup every six months
to make sure the cancer has
had no long-term effect on
his organs, he explains.
While going through his
treatments, Malcolm was
compelled to share the story
of pediatric cancer, publicly

Help Beautify Florham Park And Adopt A Spot

By Cheryl Conway
pring is just about here and a perfect
time to adopt a spot in town to beautify.
Professional landscaping companies are
invited to select an area or property in the
borough to adorn with flowers, shrubs or

even retaining walls and then maintain.

Participants are given an 18-inch sign to
display within their landscaped area to advertise their companys name, address and
telephone number and announce that they
have adopted that spot.

way in the borough of Florham Park and is

really a win for contractors and the borough.
By having private contractors sign up to
decorate and then maintain areas, the borough can reduce its labor costs as it frees
up borough employees who dont have to
maintain property, explains Florham Park
Borough Administrator William Huyler.
The program also provides free advertising for contractors, allowing them to
showcase their work for all who pass by
and beautifies the borough, he says.
Its an opportunity to advertise what
they can do, he says.
With Adopt A Spot, landscapers sign up
and sign an agreement to maintain an is-

land or borough property.

They pledge to do it for a year, says
Huyler, as long as they maintain it. While
several sites are already being taken care
of, there are several spots still available,
says Huyler.
Contractors are invited to create whatever landscape they choose.
They can do whatever they like, says
Huyler. They are limited with their own
imagination as long as their project does
not interfere with intersections or traffic, he
adds.
To find out what areas are still available
and to sign up, contact Huyler at

Saint Patricks Day History and Local Celebrations Planned

By Cara Connelly
he month of March has its perks.
Daylight savings time means an
extra hour of daylight, spring is near
and the highlight of the month - Saint
Patricks Day celebrations.
Every year on March 17, the Irish and
the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe
St. Patricks Day. What began as a religious
feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has
become an international festival celebrating
Irish culture with parades, dancing, special
foods and a whole lot of green.
Saint Patricks Day, or the Feast of Saint
Patrick (L Fhile Pdraig) is a cultural and
religious celebration held on March 17
since the early 17th century. It marks the
traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c.
AD 385-461), the foremost patron saint of
Ireland. The day commemorates Saint
Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture
of the Irish in general.
Celebrations traditionally involve public
parades, festivals or ceilithe and wearing

green. Christians also attend church services and Lenten restrictions on eating and
drinking alcohol are lifted for the day. This
seems to encourage and propagate the holidays tradition of alcohol consumption.
The Mayo Performing Arts Center is
hosting an event, Celtic Nights: Spirit of
Freedom, a local event on Thurs., March
17, at 8 p.m., that combines story and songs
with traditional Irish music and dance. According to Ed Kirchdoerffer, general
manger, the troupe of nearly 15 entertainers
tell the story of Irish independence, honoring the struggle of people of fighting to gain
freedom and democracy through dancers,
singers and musicians. Kirchdoerffer promises a fun, family show that will be educational and entertaining and there will be no
shortage of a Danny Boy sing-a-long.
Tickets are $39 - $69. Tickets can be
purchased at www.mayoarts.org or call
973-539-8008.
Other community activities included the
Morris County Saint Patricks Day Parade
in Morristown on March 12. The parade

boasts that it has more bands than the Rose

Bowl Parade. 70,000 spectators enjoy this
family friendly event that begins with preparade events at the Green at 10:30 a.m.
and the parade itself at noon at the corner
of South Street and James Street.
The Union County Saint Patricks Parade in Elizabeth began with a Mass at St.
Patricks Church at 10 a.m. on March 12.
Activities for the whole family included a

kids zone on Stuyvesant Avenue and the

parade begins at 1 p.m. sharp.
Local Irish Pubs, such as The Dublin
Pub, will offer their regular Irish fare
along with a few cultural specials and of
course, live Irish music. However one celebrate Saint Patricks Day with family and
friends, dont forget to wear green, sing an
Irish tone, enjoy some corned beef and
stay safe.

Secret Santas may be long gone, but
there has to be an angel out there willing
to hold the mortgage of Strengthen Our
Sisters, a grassroots, community based
non-profit, program serving homeless/battered women and children for more than
four decades. Faced with mortgage conflicts, the shelter was in jeopardy of having
to come up with $30,000 to avoid foreclosure.
Established in 1977 as Shelter Our Sisters - the first shelter for battered women
in North America- the organization
changed its name to Strengthen Our Sisters
(SOS) and grew to eight houses, two day
care centers, a food pantry and a thrift

store. The properties value a total of $2.5

million, with just under $600,000 left to be
paid. With restricted monies coming in, the
organization is at risk of closing its doors
to hundreds of women and children with
no other safe place to go.
I dont know what would happen to
these people, says Sandra Ramos of Ringwood, founder and executive director of
SOS. If we dont get help with the mortgage people will be on the street. If someone wants to be an angel and save our
mortgage that would be great.
Ramos explains if we had the $30,000
it would be the drop down money if someone could give it.

IMPLANT DENTISTRY
For over twenty years, implant dentistry has been a reliable option for patients
with missing teeth. With the ability to support a crown, an implant procedure
has the capacity to bypass drilling the adjacent teeth. Additionally, with the
recent availability of mini implants, implant dentistry has expanded its utilization to anchoring both full and partial dentures for a more secure fit. As they
provide an economic alternative, patients have been very receptive of mini
implants, as they make eating and speaking with dentures much easier.
Dr. Helen Chiu has always been involved in implant dentistry, making it an
integrated part of her everyday practice. From replacing a single tooth, inserting crowns or bridges, securing dentures, to creating multiple, full-arch reconstructions, she performs every step of each process, surgical and restorative.

speaking out and raising funds through the sale of wristbands, while enduring 14 rounds of chemotherapy, surgery
to remove his hip, endless side-effects, rehabilitation and
keeping up with his schoolwork.
He had realized that awareness for pediatric cancer was
lacking and that only three percent of cancer research funds
are directed to childhood cancers in regards to researching
for cures.
Two months into his treatment, Malcolm says I saw
kids dying around me. Thats when he started selling $3
rubber wristbands and in just three months raised $13,000,
donating all proceeds to the Childrens Hospital of
Philadelphia for pediatric cancer research.
Just a few weeks after his surgery, one night while in his
hospital bed, something broke the silence; you heard a
mom scream. Michael was three years old and his mom
would never see him grow up.
That was when Malcolm came up with his idea for the
Make Some Noise: Cure Kids Cancer Foundation; he incorporated Sept. 24, 2009, at the age of 11. His plan was to
host musical benefits to raise money to raise awareness and
fund pediatric cancer research.
In nearly five years, Malcolms foundation has raised
nearly $2 million to fund pediatric cancer research. With

corporate headquarters in NJ, his foundation has so far

opened chapters in Colorado, Massachusetts, Western New
York State and Washington State.
Malcolm tours the country meeting with researchers
and touring lab facilities, to better understand the crisis and
the promise of what lays ahead in medical research. During
his travels, Malcolm carries his tribute quilt The National
Angel Quilt, to honor the memories of children who died
for the lack of cures. The quilt - which is more than 60 feet
long, featuring images, names and ages of 120 of these children to date - has travelled to 20 states so far, and will continue to grow and tour until cures have been found.
To support his mission, Malcolm has been busy travelling 55,179 miles; flew on 21 planes; interviewed on radio,
television, newspapers and magazines; given 39 speeches;
attended 27 fundraisers; spent 180 volunteer hours in research labs; written a book; has become an accomplished
artist featuring portraits of childhood cancer survivors;
mentors cancer kids; visits cancer kids in the hospital; delivers gift baskets, bikes, toys, event tickets and stuffed animals to kids in treatment, and even spends his own money
to buy i-pads for other kids.
In Mayor Taylors proclamation, he states, sadly,

continues to be a beacon of hope and fights
each day for children who are facing pediatric cancer. Florham Park is so incredibly
proud to have such a courageous and giving
young man as one of its citizens.
Malcolm was honored to be recognized
by his community.
I thought it was great; I never really had
an honor like that, he says. To have a day
named after me was really special. To have
two councilmembers recently attend the
gala and award him with an outstanding citizen plaque, he says, was a humbling

honor. It reiterates how its real important

work and helps spread the awareness of pediatric cancer.
In addition to the annual gala, the Make
Some Noise Foundation hosts a 5k Heroes
Run in the fall.
My overall goal is to keep working for
not only a cure but a cure without side effects, adds Malcolm who intends on attending college in the fall and possibly
study medicine.

Handbags For Charity Carry Mission To Help Children And End Violence

By Cheryl Conway
andbags from Lucys Gift in Morristown carry much more weight than a
wallet, checkbook, lipstick and other
miscellaneous items.
With every purchase, customers carry on
their shoulders an effort to help children with
special needs and end violence. The pain of
losing her husband five years ago lingers for
owner Marisa Spagnoletti of Morristown, but
six months ago she found a way to channel
her loss by opening a non-profit boutique to
raise money for various charities such at the
P.G. Chambers School in Cedar Knolls.
Spagnoletti opened Lucys Gift boutique
in Morristown in Oct. 2015 and donates 100
percent of the proceeds to honor her late husband Maurice Spagnoletti, a prominent New
Jersey banker tragically killed in June 2011,
while working in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
As the founder of Lucys Gift, as well as
the Maurice J. Spagnoletti Foundation
(MJSF), the former Florham Park widow has
made it her mission to help children in need,
victims of crime and honor those who serve
and protect others.

Named after their 10-year old daughter,

Lucy, Spagnoletti says Lucys Gift is our gift
back to the world. Its just what I wanted to
do. It has grown beyond my dreams. I dont
have a website or a Facebook page. I have
emails from people all over the country, and
plans to open a second boutique in a major
retail strip mall.
With a background in sales marketingbrand management, Spagnoletti had worked
as a marketing director for Crowe Horwath
accounting firm in New York for 13 years,
but when her husband was killed, her world
changed.
Her business started haphazardly because of her husbands death. It began from
helping a small charity and blossomed into a
non-profit business.
Maurice had been good friends with their
daughters doctor, John Connor. It was
through that friendship that Maurice came to
support the Children of China Pediatric
Foundation (CCPF), a charity Dr. Connor
supports by performing free surgeries for orphans.
When my husband was murdered my

daughter was very sick, explains Spagnoletti. The day after he was buried, we met
Dr. Connor in Morristown to take care of
Lucy who has been faced with health issues.

Upon our return to NJ, Dr. Connor was

there and will always be there for us, Spagnoletti says. I told Dr. Connor I would keep

my husbands promise as he labeled the doctor their hero.
Instead of taking money for Lucy from those who sent donations after her tragic loss, Spagnoletti directed donations
be sent to the CCPF in her husbands memory.
As donations increased, CCPF opened a rehabilitation
training program for chronically disabled and post-surgical
orphans in his honor the Maurice Journey of love support
and hope J. Spagnoletti Rehabilitation Program. After three
years, when she got back on her feet, Spagnoletti supported
these efforts by holding small handbag auctions.
In 2012, I started doing handbag events; women in large
numbers started buying handbags, she says. By 2014, this
grew to a sold out crowd. This led to an annual event in June,
raising tens of thousands of dollars for charity.
After setting enough money aside, Spagnoletti decided to
open Lucys Gift to sell handbags on a regular basis for charity.
My idea for selling handbags for charity has exploded,
says Spagnoletti. I put the seed money in for the boutique,
in hopes to get money back to cover her salary and health insurance. After that, all proceeds will go toward helping others.
I dont have wealth, explains Spagnoletti. I created a
business where all the net profits will go to the foundation,
which go to our charities.
Inside her boutique, Spagnoletti decorated using pink, blue

and purple hues. She explains the pink represents children in

need; blue for the victims of crime; and purple for the purple
heart.
Through her foundation, MJSF has expanded its charity
to children with special needs at P.G. Chambers School in
Cedar Knolls to support children in need; is helping victims
of crime by supporting domestic violence and sexual assault
safe houses such as SAFE in Hunterdon; and aid charities that
support the Federal Bureau of Investigation, whose agents
and families inspire Marisa with their heroic efforts to protect us domestically, as explained in the MJSF mission statement.
When you buy something, you want to know where your
money is going, she explains.
Spagnoletti selected P.G. Chambers as a charity recipient
after meeting one of the mothers who sends both of her kids
who are in wheelchairs to the school, which provides the most
comprehensive education and therapy programs for children
with disabilities.
We met by chance, says Spagnoletti about Annabella
Rossi, the mother of the two students at P.G. Chambers. At
that moment she was having a bad day; I was having a bad
day.
Out of the 35 volunteers at MJSF, Rossi became her eighth
volunteer.
She started coming to my house; we became friends.
Spagnoletti honored Rossi in 2013 when she presented her

with the Maurice Spagnoletti Foundation Caregiver Award.

Annabella is a role model to me.
Every year, Spagnoletti presents the caregiver award to an
individual, a teacher, mother or nurse. In June 2015, she gave
the award to a woman named Tiffany who created a park for
disabled children near the Jets Training Facility. Tiffanys
daughter also attends the P.G. Chambers School.
Lucys Gift specializes in mostly handbags, and jewelry.
Featured are 200 handbags on display varying in color, price
and function, from popular name brands like Gucci, authentic
lines, fake leather to unheard labels. Prices of bags range from
$50 to $2,000.
Handbags are my life, she says. The sky is the limit for
us; we even carry mens wallets, and bags for men. Within
two months, we were able to triple our inventory.
Customers can also find unique costume jewelry pieces
and accesories, ranging from $18 to $350, as well as distinct
unique items such as a wine tote, her number one seller found
in a Texas boutique.
I travel the country and find really neat boutiques, she
says, bringing back those rare items, such as a little mirror
that attaches to an Iphone, to resell.
When you come to my boutique, everything is sacred,
says Spagnoletti. Our dream is to bring luxury to all women.

ways dreamed Id be able to provide fashion to everyone.
Instead of a bow or ribbon, every bag or purchase is
adorned with a barrette.
To her surprise, Spagnolettis mission is taking off. Concert-singer Naomi Miller, who was singing in Italian on the
streets in Morristown, attended her grand opening; Spagnoletti has been getting emails of support from around the country; and she recently appeared on the NBC Today Show with
Al Roker.
After five years, Im finding peace. My husband was brutally assassinated. Honoring him was my life mission. The
FBI is still investigating the case, she adds.
A prominent banker for Doral Financial, Maurice was shot
and killed at the age of 57 by unknown assailants, June 15,
2011, while sitting in his car in traffic on the highway. Employed with the company for just one year, he had been assigned to work in Puerto Rico in Jan. 2011, says Spagnoletti.
Justice is coming I believe that. The people who killed
my husband will be brought to justice. We seek justice for all.
Hope is something we have and something we have to work
for. Hope with positive action prevails. The men and women
Ive come to know are beyond extraordinary; they are the real
heroes.
Part of Spagnolettis mission is to put an end to violence.
My husband was everything to me, says Spagnoletti.

You dont heal from violence. It is prevention, awareness

and treatment that will lead to end violence. In my very small
way Im going to make an impact. Its my mission to end violence and I will. I want my husbands memory honored.
Nothing brings my husband back; my daughter needed her
father.
She says, My husband died a hero. To honor him, MJSF
plans to award a $1,500 Future Hero scholarship to a junior
college student in need from Morris County who aspires a
career in preventing or stopping violence. Eric Mohberg,
whose fianc was brutally murdered 26 years ago, joined her
MJSF board and is helping her create the scholarship.
At last years annual Handbag Auction held in June at the
Hanover Manor in East Hanover, $30,000 was raised for the
charities. Participants paid $75 for all you can eat, dancing,
raffles, silent auction of handbags and other items, and presentations by charity organizations.
Through her mission, Spagnoletti has rechanneled her
anger to provide a healthy environment for her daughter. She
explains, I can only focus on positive so she can grow up
and be positive.
Its amazing what could be done for the memory of one
hero. Through all of this Im really finding peace. I was so
low and so sad, but now Im back. If Im working 24 hours a
day, its not work, its what I love to do. I know I never let

him down. I feel my husband smiling when I can do things

like this. I do my little part in helping them; every year I feel
like Im doing more.
On her boutique wall hangs a framed poem titled Life
Does Not Frighten Me At All. A girl that Spagnoletti met
one year ago at P.G. Chambers School read her that poem.
Honestly they teach me more, she says. Since then, Spagnoletti has adopted a class there and I go and visit her. Nothing frightens this little girl who has all these issues. I would
sell my life for her.
Spagnoletti has come up with a program in which companies pay people to volunteer.
Corporations can give not to the foundation, but to the
P.G. Chambers School. For that donation, we will train that
staff. Lets get people to commit to volunteer work.
As a way to market and add new revenue source for her
boutique, Spagnoletti recently started Lucys Gift Treasure
Chest, in which she provides non-profits, fair priced tricky
tray or auction items. Her idea came about after she gave a
handbag to a church who asked her for a tricky tray donation.
Lucys Gift is open Tues. and Wed., 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.;
Thurs., Fri. and Sat., 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and Sun. 11 a.m.
to 4 p.m.

terbed; there would be some guests on the

floor, in the bathtub, in the basement.
I would get a call and say Im sorry I
have no room. But it was difficult to turn
people away who would say I finally got
the courage to leave; if you dont take me
I will die.
Ramos says, My neighbors said they
didnt want battered women on their block,
and I told them, they are already here, the
question is do you want them living with
pain, suffering and horror or do you want
them living with peace, dignity and respect?
When the town found out that Ramos
had too many people at her house they
threatened to put me in jail, she says. The
town cited her for overcrowding because
she had three or more unrelated people living together.
I told the town If you want a place for
them you have to drag them out kicking
and screaming; so they put them in a
motel, Twin Lakes Motel in Paramus.
Ramos did not turn her back on them
and instead continued to help them.

was reduced, says Ramos.

During this year and one half, they
have seen our reliability and commitment
to avoid foreclosure by paying $30,000
every three months, which is directly applied to the principal, along with a monthly
payment of $7,000, says Ramos. SOS
has done this faithfully, although it has
been challenging.
Ramos, a pioneer advocate for battered
women, started her first shelter in 1970 in
her three bedroom home in Hackensack.
She had three small children at the time,
was facing divorce after ten years of marriage and was in need of a roommate, she
explains.
I wanted a roommate, says Ramos, so
she put the word out that she wanted to
share her house. The ones who came to
me were the ones who got battered, says
Ramos. Women called to say I cant stay
in my house.
One roommate turned into 23 women in
her house at one point, she admits. Her
children would sleep with her in her wa-

We would have to pick them up and

take them to look for housing, counseling,
says Ramos. They [the town] didnt give
them food or services, counseling.
The Catholic Church would bring food
and battered women would work together
to help other women.
Over the years, in 1977, her initiative
became Shelter Our Sisters. She moved out
of her house to Bergen County in a house
located on a churchs property in Bogota.
About 10 to 15 women in children lived
there.
Her organization grew, and established
a board of directors, but after a disagreement, the board fired Ramos in 1986.
Ramos separated and formed SOS a
year later. With her children grown, she
moved to her house in Ringwood and people started calling me. I let some people
stay in my house. We knew we had to get a
shelter.
They opened a thrift store in Haskell.
We raised more money, and even the
board from her first organization would
send her people to help.
With a state regulated budget of up to
four million dollars, Ramos was able to
manage her organization but as state regulations got stricter, operations got tougher
such as paying the mortgage.
Ive always been an advocate for
women and children, says Ramos, who
teaches social issues and dynamics of domestic violence at Ramapo College in
Mahwah as an adjunct professor. Everybody has been touched by domestic violence in one way.
One woman was going to be killed by
a gangster guy, explains Ramos. Other
women and children she brought into her
shelter were rich but their husbands were
molesters and child abusers. No one
would take them. We reach out to people
who need help. We help a lot of pregnant
women and children.
Through her shelter program, Ramos
says thousands have been saved during
the past 46 years. With two hotline numbers, Ramos has made herself available to
help others.
The mission of SOS is to break the cycle
of domestic violence, poverty and abuse by
restoring balance and harmony through individual empowerment.
She currently helps 155 women and
children in seven shelters located in New

Foundland, Wanaque and West Milford;

two daycare centers in Wanaque and West
Milford; a thrift store in a church; and one
food pantry in Wanaque.
To support her organization, Ramos receives some money from the Passaic
County Dept. of Human Services, private
donations, counties and social services,
but not enough to keep it going. We have
a transportation grant but they took it away.
We have five vans; we need help. Weve
been running for three and a half years with
a non-paid staff, down from a paid staff of
55 that were let go when SOS lost funding,
she says.
Ramos says she currently has 17 nonpaid volunteers who drive the shelter residents to look for jobs, to court, doctor
appointments, social services, schools; they
fix things, watch children.
They are exhausted but they believe in
the shelter, says Ramos, just like she does.
I have seen women that have come to
me and their lives are a wreck, depressed,
suicidal, she says.
People are still calling, continues
Ramos. Every day I get four or five calls.
We take almost everybody. We take people
who no one else will take. We take people
without welfare vouchers. We dont want
to see them killed, beaten or frozen to
death.
Yesterday, a 70-year old woman had no
heat, we took her, adds Ramos. She also
took in another woman with five children,
who would be out in the street forced to
live with child molesters.
One of her houses is for all older
women, some in wheelchairs, others with
oxygen. Nobody will take them.
Many of the women and children her organization helps dont have families, are
on section eight, have families or friends
who dont like them; who dont want to
help them. We have a lot of dysfunctional
families.
Ramos explains, I see them heal, get
strong and get their lives together. We live
in a violent society; theres a lot of violence. The work Im doing I feel its a mission but right now I need an angel. I just
need someone to pay off the mortgage or
hold it. We just really need someone to
help.
To make a donation or to help, call
Ramos at 973-831-0898.
