Abstract
All antenna books ever written in English are listed, along with publication information and current availability. The list is
organized by technical area. As appropriate, comments are made on the books. Useful information is also included in the
article on how to locate antenna books in the library, and how to locate antenna books to buy (new, used, and out-of-print).
Keywords: Bibliographies; antennas

1. Introduction
1.1 The Early History of Antenna Books

he first antenna book, Electric Waves, was written by Heinrich

Hertz in German. It was translated and published in English in
1893, and reprinted in 1962. It is out of print and hard to find, even
in libraries, but is worth the pursuit to read. One cannot help but be
impressed with the number of contributions made by Hertz. The
book describes the experiments Hertz performed with dipoles,
loops, and parabolic reflector antennas. Hertz studied under
Helmholtz and Kirchhoff at the University of Berlin, and started
investigations into electromagnetics in 1883. By 1888, he had generated and received electromagnetic waves, establishing the existence of radio waves. He showed that the waves traveled at the
speed of light. In addition, he performed experiments with diffiraction, reflection, refraction, and polarization, but most important he
experimentally confirmed Maxwell's theories. Hertz died just short
of his 37th birthday, in 1894, of blood poisoning.
John Kraus wrote the first antenna textbook, Antennas, published in 1950. This was the main text used by students of antennas
through the 1950s and 1960s, after which other texts began to
appear. As a personal note, I had an antenna course from Kraus in
the 1960s. The first day of class, he came into the classroom with
his book, and said that the assignment for the term was simple:
read every word and work every problem! With electronic computing in priniltive stages, the problems were worked using a slide
rule as the calculational tool, and radiation patterns were plotted by
hand on graph paper.

The first antenna handbook, Antenna EngineeringHandbook,

edited by Henry Jasik, was published in 1961. It remained the main
reference book of practicing engineers for many years.

1.2 Background on this Book List

In 1990, I authored a first version of this article ("Bibliogra-.
phy for Antennas," IEEE Antennas and PropagationMagazine, 32,
4, August 1990, pp. 54-57). At the time, the explosion in the publication of antenna books was just beginning. In fact, when I started
my antenna engineering career in 1969, a small set of book shelves
could have held the total number of antenna books ever published
to that point, because there were only 45. Now it would take a large
room, with many book shelves, to hold the 327 antenna books
published to date. [Note: this total includes only English editions,
all editions of books that had major changes from previous editions. and Hertz' 1893 book.] It is, of course, difficult to decide
what qualifies as an antenna book. I took a broad view, and
included books with substantial antenna content or antenna-related
content that in my opinion was of potential value.
Figure 1 shows the number of books published by decade.
My 1990 version of this article listed 119 books published prior to
1990: four in the 1940s, nine in the 1950s, 17 in the 1960s, 20 in
the 1970s, and 69 in the 1980s. This time the count, excluding
Hertz's 1893 book, is five in the 1940s, 12 in the 1950s, 28 in the
1960s, 28 in the 1970s, and 72 in the 1980s, for a total of 145. The
increase from 119 to 145 for this time period was due to finding
more books from that era because of improved search resources.

the group identifier for the country; I11is the publisher identifier;
222222 is the unique book-title identifier; and 3 is the check digit
that verifies if the other digits are correct. X is used to represent 10.

2000s

Figure 1. The number of antenna books published by decade.

The recent decade totals are 76 for the 1990s, and 105 for the
2000s. Note from the plot that the growth rate remains unabated plus, there remains time left to add to the current decade's total.
The budget required to purchase all the books on this list
would certainly be more than a year's salary. However, even the
most-committed antenna engineer only needs a carefully selected
subset of these books. There is significant overlap in content
among the listed books, and many may just not be of interest to
you. if you are new to antenna engineering, my suggestions for
starting your library are to buy one textbook, one handbook, and a
few specialized books that are of interest. Usually, one should look
for the most recent publication date. However, publication date is
much less important in the field of antennas than in other fields,
such as computers and electronics. Knowledge in antennas is one
of accumulation rather than replacement. Old antennas are still
used in modem applications. The Yagi antenna, invented in 1926,
is a good example of an antenna that is still finding many new uses.

1.3 Book Classification Systems

Books are located in libraries using Library of Congress
(LOC) catalog numbers. Many antenna books have Library of
Congress numbers beginning with TK7871 .6. The Library of Congress numbers are the same for each edition of the same book.
Older books may not have a Library of Congress number, or may
use the Dewey Decimal Classification number.
IEEE Xplore has made it possible to search via the Internet
for a journal article, and print it while having a cup of coffee in
your own office. However, accessing book content remains rather
basic. Google Book Search is the first effort toward online electronic access of book content; however. full book access, at least
for now, is not available. Thus, public, company, and personal
libraries are the primary resources for books. Major libraries have
excellent online catalogs, with the Library of Congress being the
premier resource (http://catalog.loc.org).
Books also have a unique ISBN (Intemnational Standard Book
Number) number. ISBN numbers are used when purchasing books,
because publishers and book sellers use them as the primary identifier. Both ISBN and LOC numbers are found on the page following
the title page of a book, and are included for each book in the list to
follow. The ISBN number has 10 digits. A 13-digit ISBN is also
assigned to a book, which adds 978 in front of the 10-digit number
IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine, Vol. 50, No. 4, August 200812

There are a number of resources for purchasing books. Shopping is usually done on the Internet, because your local book store
is not likely to have a significant selection of antenna books. New
books are available directly from the publisher of the book, as well
as from book sellers. Table 1 is a list of publishers and sellers that
handle a number of antenna books.

1.5 Searching for Books

Online resources are available to assist in searching for
books, including out-of-print books. Many of them provide complete details on the availability and cost of new and used books. A
few of these sources are listed in Table 2. Google Book Search
(http://books.google.com) shows portions of book content. Several
additional sources for locating out-of-print books can be found at
htt://trussel.comlf books.htm.,

1.6 Using the List

The list of books, beginning with Section 3, lists books by
technical category. Within each technical category, books are
ordered by publication date. As mentioned above, publication date
is less important in antennas than in other fields, and old books can
be very valuable as a resource for current applications.
The decision to include a particular book was often difficult.
This is in part due to the blurring of the boundary of an antenna in
modem devices (radios, radars, etc.). As a result of the evolutionary process of integration of the antenna into devices, we see an
increasing number of books that are not limited to just antennas.
They have emphasis on multiple topics in RF as well as antennas,
or focus on applications that include system aspects, such as
propagation and platform issues (for example, one book is limited
to body-mounted applications). Two topics on which it was especially difficult to make a decision on whether to include a book
were smart antennas and computational-methods books. Many of
the smart-antenna books often emphasize signal processing for
arrays, rather than antenna applications. Computational methods
books often have only a small amount of information directed
toward solving antenna problems. However, on the other hand, the
principles are needed for numerical analysis of antennas. I made
judgment calls in these areas, but tended to lean toward inclusion.
The list does not include the many commercial simulation codes
that are available. Finally, only English-language books are listed.
Sources where books can be purchased are listed for each
book under "Availability." The notation "POD" refers to "Print on
Demand." Availability changes rapidly, because new books go out
of print and are no longer available from publishers.

2. Antenna Definitions
Articulation is very important to the antenna field because it
is such a distinct discipline. Confusion and major misunderstandings often arise due to terminology issues. Books frequently define
terms differently from the IEEE Standard. Sometimes, this is done
because the author does not look at the IEEE Standard. Sometimes
the author disagrees with an IEEE definition and invents an alternate definition; this, of course, introduces confusion into the literature. Because there are inconsistent and incorrect usage of terms
in books, the reader must be careful. Also, when reading selected
sections of a book, it should not be assumed that standard terminology is used. The reader should search elsewhere in the book for
the definition of the terms used by the author. Of course, the same
symbol often does not correspond to the same quantity in different
books, or even within a book. The definitions of antenna terms are
found in the following IEEE Standard:
