ofJyotish.Awavejustcannotreplacetheocean.WhileIhadalwaysbeenopentotestingany
methodologyoutsideconventionaljyotish,Iwasalwaysawarethattheauthorsofsuchpaddhathis/systems
claimedunreasonablethingsattimes.Inevertooktheircriticismabouttraditionalastrologyseriously.But
abeginnertakesthemtooseriouslyandmissesoutonalargeandsubstantialpartofthelearningprocess.
Suchrebelornontraditionalmethodologiesmayperhapsbefinefordiscussionwithawellgrounded
astrologer.Butitisaverygoodideaforabeginnertosticktotraditional,soastoavoidthecommon
pitfalls.Theaveragelearnertriesvariousmethodswithpartialknowledge,hopsfromoneauthortothe
other,managestocatchpiecesofinformationfromeachplaceandperson,andeventuallytriestomake
senseofthosefragments.Theresult?Hisknowledgeofastrologyisquiteoftenamassofideasundigested,
unassimilatedandunharmonisedrunningriotinhismind!

cosmiccurrents.Sinceagoodmuhurtawillensureoptimumoutcomeforthedesiredactivity,theprinciples
behindmuhurta,arelargelyusefulindecidingtheoutcomeofanymoment,basedonananalysisofthe

considered.Sowhethertheyhavetheirchartsornot,evenilliteratevillagersavoidTuesdaysandSaturdays
generallyforanyactivity.ButanastrologermaychooseaTuesdayforaKrooraandUgraactivity,aftera
closestudyofthechartandthePanchanga,sinceTuesdayhasanUgraKrura(AggressiveCruel)qualityto
it.SoTuesdaysareconsideredforactivitieslike'rogamuktasnana'(takingbathafterrecoveringfrom
illness),cultivationofland,actsinvolvingkillingofbirds/animalsetc(notthatIapprovesuchactivities!).
Butthisdoesntcontradictthegeneralversesthatstatethattuesdaysareinauspicious,sincethetextsstate
elsewherethattuesdaysmaybeconsideredfor*someactivities.Soquotingoneverseandtryingtojustifya
viewthatnostandardtextonmuhurtasupportsishighlymisleading.
AsfortheoriginalquestionofwhetherYogaistobeusedasanintegralpartofthePanchanga,ithasbeen
usedandSHOULDbeusedasanimportantlimbofthePanchanga,asitwasmeanttobe.Anyattemptto
distortthisfactcannotbejustified,asthestandardtextsunambigiouslydeclareYoganotonlyasanintegral
limbofthePanchangam,butalsoasaveryimportantconsideration,sinceitcanspoiltheeffectsofan
otherwisecarefullychosenmuhurta.
