Plastic carrier bags 'should be free of charge'

Two thirds of UK shoppers believed recyclable or biodegradable single-use

plastic carrier bags should be provided free of charge in supermarkets,
according to a new survey.
With a 5p-a-bag levy due to come into force in England in October following similar
moves in Wales and Scotland a YouGov survey, commissioned by Symphony
Environmental Technologies, the technologies group which manufacturers oxobiodegradable additives for plastics, found that 39% of those polled strongly agreed
and 26% tended to agree that such bags should not attract a charge.
Symphony claimed the poll was the first time the UK public had been asked about its
attitudes to the bag levy.
The survey also asked consumers should all plastic carrier bags be recyclable and
biodegradable in case they accidentally get into the open environment, to which
54% of those polled said they strongly agreed and nearly a third said they tended to
agree.
Another question asked would shoppers prefer to visit stores that offered
biodegradable recyclable plastic bags 59% said they would or those traditional
non-biodegradable and non-recyclable bags, which attracted 3%.
The survey found that 57% always used bags for things like bin liners and other
household uses, while 27% often did and 12% sometimes.
Symphonys chief executive Michael Laurier said: Despite the 5p charge a large
number of carrier bags will be supplied, and many of them could get out into the open
environment where they could lie or float around for decades.
It is not good enough for them to be recyclable they must also be biodegradable in
the open environment, not just in compost.
Laurier said his company's oxo-biodegradable additive turned a plastic carrier bag at
the end of its useful life into biodegradable materials, which can be bio-assimilated
in the open environment faster than straw and twigs and much faster than ordinary or
recycled plastic and if collected during its useful life it can be recycled.

Sacoele din plastic ar trebui s fie oferite

gratuit
ctre (viitoarea) taxarea sacoelor.
material reciclabil ori biodegradabil, n caz c ar ajunge, n
acord.
O alt ntrebare a vizat faptul dac respondenii ar prefera s i
tradiionale, fabricate din material nebiodegradabil i
nereciclabil 3% au spus da.
Studiul a relevat c 57% dintre cei ntrebai folosesc
ntotdeauna sacoele pentru depozitarea i aruncarea
Directorul executiv al Symphony, Michael Laurier, a declarat: In
sacoe, iar multe dintre ele ar putea ajunge n mediul

nconjurtor, unde ar putea zace ori pluti timp de decenii

ntregi.
fie i biodegradabile n mediul nconjurtor (n sine), nu doar n
compost.
