Celebrating
architecture,
people and place
Over two decades weve seen a major shift in peoples attitudes
towards the built environment alongside the extraordinary
physical transformation of London. Londoners are now more
passionate about both their neighbourhoods and their city as a
whole than ever before, and more willing to champion the value
of good design.
But there is still a long way to go to ensure that Londoners,
policymakers and professionals can work together effectively to
create a better city.
One of Open-Citys best-known programmes Open
House London has continued to provide a vital open forum for
everyone living and working in the city to discuss the importance
of quality in architecture and urban design.
Our theme for the 2013 edition of Open House London,
Celebrating architecture, people and place, underlines our
continuing commitment as an organisation to ensuring that
everyone has a chance to learn more about Londons built
environment, and to offer their thoughts and ideas on how it can
be improved.
And this year we are launching our first-ever Open Debate,
extending the opportunity for you to express your views on what
kind of city we are creating.

Practice
In recent years there has been a much
greater impetus among architects and built
environment professionals to get more involved
with local communities and to help them create
inspiring places.
However, there are still few direct channels for
professionals to offer their insights and expertise
and to work long-term with wider audiences. The
thirdarmof Open-Citys focus is its continuing
in-depth partnerships with architects, engineers
and many other built environment professionals.
Our programmes also allow architects and other
professionals not only to showcase their work
Open House London in particular offers great
exposure for new and recent projects but also
to develop their own skills in communicating and
presenting their ideas and projects to a wider
audience, including teachers and students, and
to open up a direct dialogue with potential clients
and stakeholders.

What is behind
Open House London?
Each year Open House London gives hundreds of
thousands of people the chance to explore their
citys architecture and urban design completely
for free.
As Londons leading architecture education charity,
we believe that the best way to understand how
well-designed buildings and spaces can have a
positive impact on our lives is to experience them
at first hand. Doing this enables everyone to build
up their knowledge of good design.
Since its inception in 1992, yearly financial support
from all quarters grants, local authorities,
sponsors, donations has to be sought to ensure
its sustainability.
But vital to the success of the event is the support
of all the property and building owners, managers
and administrators who provide a huge amount of
time and resources for free in facilitating building
openings and creating events, walks and talks.
Without their support and that of the 6000
volunteers who offer their time and expertise as
stewards and guides over the weekend the event
simply would not happen.
It is truly a community endeavour!

Londons Infrastructure
This year we continue our
partnership with the Institution
of Civil Engineers (ICE) to present a
special showcase of projects. These
demonstrate how civil engineering
goes beyond the technical to make a
major contribution to the sustainable
creation and improvement of our
built environment. Walks, tours and
boat trips celebrate and explore
innovative engineering of the past,
present and future. Youll also be able
to visit ICE London Civil Engineering
Award winning projects.
