Draw a pit on the board with somebody at the bottom. How can this person
be saved? Have someone come up to the board and add to the drawing.
How does that apply to grace?
Maybe it would be easier to apply this picture to grace if we knew
what grace was? What do you think grace means and what is grace?
With that definition how do you see grace in their own lives?
What is Grace?
Grace Defined
The main idea of the word is divine means of help or strength, given
through the bounteous mercy and love of Jesus Christ. It is made possible
by His atoning sacrifice, that mankind will be raised in immortality, every
person receiving his body from the grave in a condition of everlasting life.
It is likewise through grace that individuals may use the Atonement. It
also enables us to receive strength and assistance to do good works that
they otherwise would not be able to maintain if left to their own means.
This grace is an enabling power that allows men and women to lay hold on
eternal life and exaltation after they have expended their own best
efforts. Grace is needed by every soul in consequence of the Fall of Adam
and also because of mans weaknesses and shortcomings. However, grace
cannot suffice without total effort on the part of the recipient.
With this definition do you think there are different experiences that
come to mind with this definition then with the definition we had earlier?
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall bask what ye will,
and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my
disciples.
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my
love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I
have kept my Fathers commandments, and abide in his love.
What do we think this means?
Ideas
Elder Bednar
Elder Bednar quoted Jacob 4:7 Nevertheless, the Lord God showeth us
our weakness that we may know that it is by his grace, and his great
condescensions unto the children of men, that we have power to do these
things in his talk In The Strength of the Lord. Elder Bednar wants us to
pay close attention to grace in this scripture. He went to Ammon and
Enoch to show why grace is important.
Does anyone want to share the stories of Ammon and Enoch to refresh our
memories?
Ammons testimony: Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak;
therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I
can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land,
for which we will praise his name forever (Alma 26:12).
While we all probably are more familiar with Ammons story because of
seminary this year, it probably is more obvious how grace helped Ammon
throughout his life.
Enoch who we may not know as well Elder Bednar tells us of a promise
given to Enoch found in Moses 6: 31-32.
And when Enoch had heard these words, he bowed himself to the
earth, before the Lord, and spake before the Lord, saying: Why is it that I
have found favor in thy sight, and am but a lad, and all the people hate
me; for I am slow of speech; wherefore am I thy servant?
And the Lord said unto Enoch: Go forth and do as I have commanded
thee, and no man shall pierce thee. Open thy mouth, and it shall be filled,
and I will give thee utterance, for all flesh is in my hands, and I will do as
seemeth me good.
Elder Bednar goes on to say that we can receive the blessings from this
promise today whenever we feel like we cant do something, fulfill our
callings, or are unprepared, overwhelmed, or inadequate in any way to do
an assignment or fulfill a responsibility.
Scriptures
(erase the board) Will someone to read Moroni 10:32-33 and someone else
read Ephesians 2:8? (assign if needed)
Moroni 10:32-33
32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all
ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all
your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace
ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye
can in nowise deny the power of God.
33 And again, if ye by the grace of God are perfect in Christ, and deny not his
power, then are ye sanctified in Christ by the grace of God, through the shedding of
the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of
your sins, that ye become holy, without spot.
Ephesians 2:8
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the
gift of God:
From these scriptures, I came up with a list of things that we need to do to
be able to use grace. (write on the board.)
