Hearty Congratulations !!!
President Emeritus of Gurudeva Charitable Trust,
Dr.K.R. Rajappan will be honoured on November
2nd by awarding the 'Palpu award
About Dr K.R. Rajappan- started his own
hospital under the name of Specialists Hospital in
1982. Dr. Rajappan was the first person to do hair
transplant in Kerala. The first free plastic Surgery
clinic was introduced in 1974. Since then, he had
done over 200 free Plastic surgery operations every year for poor patients
from all over Kerala. He had ever since brought a smile on the face of poor
children and adults alike who were disfigured with cleft palate, cleft lip etc. In
1980 he got the Individual International Meritorious Service Medal from the
International Lions President Llyod Morgan for the free services he has
rendered to the poor people.

On 23rd September 2015, we had Orientation programme


for the 2015 batch MBBS Students .Principal Prof Dr M J John & Dr
Sedhu.P.A ,Manager of Institutions addressed the gathering. Oath
taking session was led by Prof.Dr. A.Ramachandran.Dr.Ajith kumar
introduced the Eminent speakers from out side Prof.
Dr.D.M.Vasudevan(Bio chemistry) and Prof.Dr.Gopakumaran
Kartha(Physiology). Prof.Dr.Satish G Prabhu gave felicitations .HODs
Prof Dr.Prakashkumar, Prof Dr.Indirakumari & Prof Dr Suchandha Sahu
also addressed the gathering. Mr.Asheed Menon,college union
chairman welcomed the new students. Prof Dr .Raju Antony gave
guidelines to the students and parents. Prof Dr.Madhavi
Ramachandran proposed vote of thanks.

Sessions on 28-9-2015 was the introduction to different


departments, introduction to HODs & staff. Classes on Effective
Communication, Moulding a Doctor, Pedagogy to Androgogy,
Discipline, Habits, Manners, do's and dont's in Medical College, how
to approach Examination by Dr.Sachin Menon ,Dr.Rajesh Panicker,
Dr.Lavanya G.N, Dr.Rakesh.K.Pullichikkat & Dr.Jiss Joseph,
respectively.

new cases of hypertension , 3 cases of Diabetes Mellitus & 2
suspected cases of Cancer.

Camp at Palliative Care Center at Chegamanad


On 29-09-2015 a Special Programme by Mr. C.K.Suresh ,
Director of ATMA Foundation on Attitude Build up, Adolescence
issues, Goal oriented Learning & Communication was held.

3-09-2015 Approach to a case of Poisoning Dr.Tina Ann
Antony, Asst.Prof. presented the topic. Dr.Nagaraja, Professor &HOD,
Dept. Of General Medicine chaired the session

As part of the Community Health activities, Medical Team


from SNIMS visited Palliative Care Center at Chegamanad on 10th
September. The team comprised of four doctors and supportive staff.
The need for an Oxygen Cylinder& wheel chair were proposed by the
inmates there , which the medical team agreed to consider. The
destitutes at the centre appreciated the charity and good will of
SNIMS.

Medical camps
Medical camp was conducted on September 6th at Kootukad
near Moothakunnam with the help of Jayasree charitable
trust,Kootukad. Dept of General medicine and Pulmonology
participated. Around 60 patients were examined and free medicines
were distributed .

Detection of Cancer & Life -style Diseases at IMA Hall, Paravur


On September 13th, IMA Paravur Branch,Prathyaasha Palliative Care,
Paravur & SNIMS, Chalakka jointly organized a medical camp for
screening Cancer, Diabetes, Respiratory Disease, Hypertension
&Obesity. The camp was officially inaugurated by Oncologist ,
Dr. C.N.Mohanan Nair . On the very same day a Seminar was also
conducted by Dr. Mohanan Nair on early detection of Cancer.
IMA President of N. Paravur, Dr C.N.Mohanan chaired the session .
The other dignitaries on the dias were , Dr.K.Sasidharan, Secretary,
IMA Paravur, Shri R.Viswabharan Nair, President PATRAAC, Shri
Jalaludeen Mooppan, Chairman & Shri K. Chandran Master,
Secretary, Prathyaasha. Prof.Dr. Raju Antony, Vice-Principal,
SNIMS,Chalakka spoke on the occasion.

Social Activities
Teachers workshop on Mental Health in Children
Dr Ashwin Krishnan, Asst Prof. Dept. Of
Psychiatry, participated in the workshop for
teachers which was conducted by MathrubhumiVKC-Nanma organization . Teachers from the
Ernakulam and Alwaye educational Districts
attended the workshop. Dr.Ashwin led the
workshop and discussed the physical and mental
problems & their management.

Awareness Class on Cancer and Life style diseases.


Prof.Dr.Raju Antony, HOD, Community Medicine led the session
at Gothuruthu on 20-09-2015 for the members of Greenland
Residents Association .

conducted an awareness class for members of different Residents
Associations at Vaniakadu,N.Paravur on 26-09-2015.

SNIMS observing National/International Health days.


SNIMS observed the National Nutrition Week by conducting
an Awareness class at Anganawadi 34 at Puthenvelikara On
12/09/2015. Around 40 mothers & Children attended .
Mr.Satheesh Chandran Nair, Senior Health Inspector introduced the
programme and speakers. Dr Anantha Ghosh took the class on
Nutrition.

World Alzheimer's Day

SNIMS joined with Block Panchayat and ICDS of Parakadavu


in observing the World Alzheimer's Day by conducting an awareness
class on Alzheimer's disease. Dr.Krishnan nair & Mr Satheesh
Chandran led the session.

World Heart Day


The World Heart Day is observed on 29th September,
annually to create healthy heart environment. The theme of the World
Heart Day is "Heart Choices not Hard Choices" which focuses on the
benefits of low salt diet with the aim to reduce the risk of
cardiovascular diseases.

Screening for Blood pressure was done on 21/9/15 by


SNIMS, at KSRTC bus station, Angamaly with the help of Cardiac
Society of India. Around 600 persons were screened by Dr. Philip
Thomas & Dr. Jaydeep Menon .
Dr Krishnan Nair detailed the importance of Nutrition of Mothers &
Children. Ms. Indira, Health Inspector& Geethu JPHN were part of the
team.

Suicide prevention day


On World Suicide Prevention Day September 10 th 2015, the
World Health Organisation (WHO) called for collective efforts to raise
awareness about suicide and reduce the stigma associated with it.
.
A programme was conducted at block Panchayat conference hall in
Parakadavu.This was a joint venture of Dept of Psychiatry &
Community Medicine.

An awareness class was conducted at the Gram panchayat Hall in


which Dr Krishnan nair and Mr Satheesh Chandran Nair from SNIMS
discussed the various aspects of the problem and means of
prevention. Around 50 persons participated. Rabies being a 100%
fatal disease, let us all join the global fight against rabies on this Day.

An Intermedico Festival ELENORK is planned by KMA in
association with College Unions of 2014-15 is to be held at
Government Medical College, Kottayam.

conducted class on causes for suicide. Mrs.Soji, Clinical Psychologist
conducted class on the role of Anganwadi workers in the prevention
of suicide in the Community.
Dr.P.Gopalakrishnan, Associate Professor in Community Medicine,
associated the relation between excess alcohol consumption and
suicide and ways to prevent. Mr.Satheesh Chandran, Sr. Health
Inspector & Mr. Maneesh, Social worker were part of the organizers.

Study at Harvard University shows that olive oil in daily diet can
lessen the risk of developing cancer by 9%.Laboratory experiments
show that oleocanthal ,component of olive oil can kill the cancerous

So eating a variety of plant foods daily gives multiple protections
because one will get an assortment of polyphenols in daily diet.

Power of plants
A variety of plants in our diet could provide multiple
protection from various cancers .All plant based foods fruits, grains,
vegetables, nuts & seeds contain polyphenols that show anti-tumour
activity by inducing the cancer cells to suicide or/and prevents their
proliferation. Low intake of vegetables and fruits is believed to cause
19% of cancer of the digestive system.
Fruits &Vegetables.
Berries protect against mouth, oesophageal & colon cancers because

Ayush Wellness Centers


Holistic Health Centers of Ayush-Ayurveda,Unani, Siddha ,
Homeopathy , Naturopathy and Yoga are to start functioning at
Kollam,Ernakulam,,Thrissur & Malappuram by October 2015 .
Wellness Centers with Yoga and Meditation will be started in all
districts. They will function six days a week and daily from 6am to 9
am & 4 pm to 6 pm.Two extra Wellness Centers, one at Assembly
building and another at Secretariat are allotted to
Thiruvananthapuram district.

Three win Nobel Prize in Medicine for parasite fighting therapies.


Three scientists were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine
for discovering therapies that have revolutionised the treatment of
some of the most devastating parasitic diseases the Nobel
committee announced on 5-10 2015.
William C. Campbell and Satoshi Omura won for developing a new
drug, Avermectin a derivative of Ivermectin which has nearly
eradicated River Blindness and radically reduced the incidence of
Filariasis. They shared the award with Youyou Tu, who discovered
Artemisinin,a drug that has significantly reduced death rates from
Malaria.
